What is the most recent successful mascot create?

The 16 bits was the "Era of the mascots", when every company try to create a iconic character to represent them.

We have amazing characters come that time, like Sonic, Bubsy, Earthworm Jim and even the back of Donkey Kong.

After that, on 32 bits, the number of new mascots shrink a lot,but we still have Crash, Banjo, Jax and others. On 128 bits we have Jack and Daxter, Pikmin, Rachet and Clank.

Last gen I can only think in mascots of cellphone games, like Crazy Dave and the angry Birds.

In that generation, is there any new mascot at all?

Since you mentioned Bubsy, who isn't actually successful or tied to a platform but is a mascot archetype, I'm gonna represent my boy Tembo:

Splatoon?
The miis if you don't count that for whatever reason, or Sackboy if you consider him still successful.
Also, Steve from Minecraft.

Tracer from Overwatch, even if I don't personally like her.

Going back further, Orange Squid Girl from Splatoon.

Squid kids man. Never seen a new Nintendo IP go from nothing to close to as important as games like Mario or Zelda this quickly.

That brings up a good question, as someone who knows next to nothing about Yokai Watch, doesn't this game have two mascots?

The ghost thing and the cat thing? Cat thing is definitely cuter, but I feel like I see the ghost thing more often.

Yup, Jibanyan (the cat) and Whisper (the ghost). They kinda have the same roles as Pikachu and either of starter Pokemon respectively, from what I understand.

Ghost thing, whisper, is like an aid to the main character but can't be used in battle. It's kind of be like if a Pokémon main character had a Navi. Probably still a mascot along with the cat though.

Have to question how famous the squids from Splatoon really are if no one seems to be aware they're actually called inklings.
