My wife is travelling, so was perfect time to finally repurpose our study to its rightful use as a NES cave.

Thanks! Didn't realise how hard Salamander is, I thought I'd do better having experience with Gradius III. Need to 1CC it since you can't really bounce back from death losing all your shit.

I nominate Salamander fot June!

is the cheapest way to get a working famicom disc system just buying a refurbished one on ebay?

or should I buy a broken one and do the work myself?

or should I import a working one from yahoo auctions? I can't imagine that would be cheaper than ebay but I thought I'd ask anyways.

thanks friends :)

What do you guys recommend for cleaning NES carts? I usually do the windex on a cotton swab, but any other recommendations?

Does anyone know if it's possible to play famicom/nes Romsets on an fdsstick? I'm trying to play the Lagrange point translation but it I don't get the music when I play on my everdrive and AV famicom.

No the FDSstick will only play FDS games. It just replaces the disk drive of the FDS, but still needs the actual hardware in the RAM adapter to work.

The Everdrive doesn't support VRC7 expansion audio yet, and it's a pretty advanced audio chip so I'd say the chances of it getting support are pretty slim. But you never know. For now though the only way is to have the actual cart.

Open it up and use an eraser to rub off the grime and corrosion. Unless it's a real haggard flea market find, it should come right off. Brush off the leavings and you're done. No chemicals or drying off needed.

Careful, you might get attacked for just recommending the eraser method.

i blame this club =P jk,

Hah! It would be awesome if us picking a game would be enough to cause a run on a cart.

But seriously, there is some knowledge in this thread. If someone recommends picking up a game, they're probably doing so for a reason. Like right now? I'd recommend getting in on Shadow of the Ninja before the price skyrockets as well.

I own the european version of this game, but been wondering for a long time if i should get the ntsc version as well, might be the time, as its an awesome game.

Don't use Windex or a cotton swab. Use either an eraser or Rubbing Alcohol. Cotton swabs pull a part too easily.

What kind of eraser do you recommend? The kind at the end of pencil, or those thicker ones that are like 2-3 inches long?

Happy to find out that the Famicom Disk System games I bought, and my Twin Famicom disk drive, works...

Played Mystery of Murasame Castle, Esper Dream, and Moero Twinbee - didn't realize Moero Twinbee was just a port of Stinger with a 3 player mode (whaa?), Murasame isn't bad as a more linear, action-based take on Zelda (but not as good), and Esper Dream was a disappointment. It's an action RPG where you enter a separate battle arena by touching 'footprints' on the world map/in the dungeons... unfortunately, the enemies take too many hits and the game gets old fast.

Any other worthwhile FDS games I should look up?

Can anyone recommend a good composite audio splitter? The last one I got from monoprice was too thick, and seemed like it would harm the inputs.

I learned somewhere in this thread that you don't even need them for most tvs and it worked for me. Plug your one audio cord into the white jack on your tv and it splits it for you...in case I'm remembering wrong try the other way if that doesn't work.

Yea some TVs offer this. The two I use do this. I was puzzled by it at first but it works. Thought my TV was having issues with audio.

@Teknoman

I don't know if you have a Radio Shack around but that is where I bought mine. I tried searching for a catalog number but I couldn't find it. I'll edit that info in if I find it.

My FDS just isn't right. Thinking I will do the FDS Stick thing. Would love to collect (LOVE the look and feel of the disks) but it may not be worth it.

I love FDS and have like 100 disks, but had never heard of the FDS Stick thing, looks pretty good.

The Everdrive completely sucks for FDS due to the busted audio, so that might be a cool toy for me to get!

EDIT: Oh wow, FDS stick is a full dev tool, allowing writing back to original disks! That's killer, it will allow disks with the wrong game on them (that were overwritten at kiosks 30 years ago) to be restored to their retail form. I'll also be able to make physical repros of all the Hong Kong pirate disk versions of cart games!

I think I actually love fiddling around with old hardware and making cool retro stuff more than playing games.

Mine does split but only on the front ports. Since i've got my NES RGB modded, i've got to use the component input on the back, and its audio ports dont split automatically.

But i'll try to find that one.

I'd say so. Cart only goes at least twice that right?

Also yay for Conquest! Know who else worked on this game? The guys behind the Ogre Battle ( Yasumi Matsuno and composer Masaharu Iwata).

I don't know if I'm missing sarcasm, but thats a crazy good deal, it goes for 450-600 usually.

Just hope it isn't a repro

Hey y'all, get ready to raid that Crystal Palace in June!

Conquest of the Crystal Palace is a really good game, and it's always surprising to see that it still hasn't had a big price jump like those two recently-mentioned titles Shatterhand or Shadow of the NInja... but it still could happen, I guess. But isn't it nice that at least one of the great lesser-known NES games is still cheap?

On the note of those two games though, Shatterhand and Shadow of the Ninja are both games I got quite cheap ($4 for Shatterhand and $5 for Shadow of the Ninja, loose carts only) in July 2012. That's not THAT long ago, but since both have seen huge price spikes, Shatterhand particularly... I'd would almost certainly not own either one at the $20-$40 (loose, if you get a good deal) they go for today. I don't love either game but they are nice to have for sure. Shadow of the Ninja is good though difficult, but I have issues with Shatterhand... your attack is too short range, that game is maybe too hard.

Looking it up, the composer for this one's actually Tomohisa Mitsuyasu - though Iwata did do some sort of sound work on the game, and it's surprising to see a name as familiar as his come up. I know he did a lot of awesome Genesis work, paired with Hitoshi Sakamoto.

What's the benefit of owning a Famicom Disk System? It looks really neat but I'm unsure what I'd use it for. I assume that FDS games work on the NES everdrive doesn't require the FDS. Anyone got one? What do you use it for? Would you recommend one?

FDS is awesome. Heaps of great, exclusive games.

Everdrive can play them, but has poor emulation of the FDS extra audio channels, so is really not an option for games that use FDS expansion audio (around 2/3 of them).

I searched my history and found this list of some of my favourite FDS games from this post, though this is just Konami games lol:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=181557819&postcount=7128

Ai Senshi Nicol - 10/10 game with amazing music
Arumana no Kiseki - 10/10 game with amazing music
Falsion - awesome shooter
Meikyuu Jiin Dababa - Awesome puzzle platformer with amazing music
Gyruss - much better music than the cart version
Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa - much better music than the cart version
Akumajo Dracula - Castlevania with saving
Moreo Twinbee - released in modified without three player support as Stinger
Smash Ping Pong (published by Nintendo) - very cool ping pong arcade game
Dracula 2 - Castlevania II with higher quality music but very frustrating load times!
Doremikko - music game that comes with a Keyboard
Naze no Kabe - Awesome expansion on the Arkanoid formula, releaed as Crackout in PAL
Final Command: Red Fortress - was released in expanded form as Jackal - completely different levels here though, I think of it as a prequel.
Exciting Baseball - Double Dribble with cool music, minus the cutscenes
Exciting Soccer - fantastic soccer game. Best of 8-bit soccer games
Konami Tennis - really great tennis game. Best of 8-bit except Game Boy Tennis.
Konami Ice Hockey - Blades of Steel - basically the same as cart version

Conquest of the Crystal Palace is relatively cheap but a good candidate for a buyout, so if you don't have it for the club NOW is the time to pick it up. Here's the price chart for it.

https://www.pricecharting.com/game/...ystal-palace?q=conquest+of+the+crystal+palace

I found that price to be kind of surprising so I looked on eBay and it's definitely a bit higher (closer to $30+ than sub $20) so I wouldn't delay if you're into it. Get it now before it's too late.

You think Shatterhand is too hard? The only time I had any trouble completing it was the first half of the last stage, other than that the game was really pretty easy. As for Shadow, I've been meaning to get through that. Maybe soon.

Wow, that Life Force thing is amazing. It reminds me about a question that I have always wondered about.

How were the maps in the Nintendo Player's Guides made? Here you can tell they are patched together out of a photograph of each screen, which is a mental job. But the official Nintendo guides had cleaner maps with no discolouration, almost like illustrated.
