Romancing SaGa 2 now available in English for iOS/Android

Finally managed to put in about an hour into the game today. Good stuff. The localization is definitely unpolished, and the writing in general could do with a bit more flavor and punch. But goddamnit, it's Romancing SaGa 2 in English on a modern platform, purchased legally. Still feels surreal!

Finally managed to get to the next generation. My characters were stretched very thin, and I was save-scumming a lot to avoid losing anyone.

Thankfully, all the abilities I learned cross over. Waterfowl blade is making taking down hordes a much easier process :). I have enough SP to spam the attack from like 3 different characters to take anything down, lol.

If I lose a recruited character to LP Death, do I still have the skills he sparked with the move tutors? Or does he have to survive the generation?

Pretty sure you lose any techs you sparked with them.

Man this past generation lasted four years. I had finished the Saigo event, and it had given me a gen shift, but I wanted to put in the order for the University first, so I reloaded, did that and finished up the Mermaid Potion (well, I got the Mermaid Potion, too bad her lover is long dead), went back to turn in the Saigo event and get my generation shift... and it didn't happen.

So I was like, ok, I'll go tell Noel to sod off and get a gen shift there. Except, no, telling him to chill doesn't get a gen shift. So between Noel and the tower event I had fought enough battles for the university to be finished and I was able to take out Bokuohn and finally get it.

Interesting, so the upgrade can happen before a gen shift? That's good to know.

Damn. I got a guy with 1 LP (my tank) who is my only guy with decent spear skills.

Yeah, prepare to save-scum everywhere until you get it. I was having a rough time for a while.

But it also happened that I was in later areas that had harder enemies than what I was prepared for. Maybe look at a guide for the next easiest area to make it a bit easier.

Wow, I just annihilated the termite queen. I was worried, because the blue termite workers have quite a number of OP attacks that can kill you in one hit.

It helped that I could stun the queen almost every round, and deal about 2-3k in damage.

Oh bloody hell, Wagnas was fricking tough! I won that battle by the skin of my teeth, but that's arguably the toughest of the Heroes done now.

And that's 5 of the Seven Heroes taken down. Approaching the end soon, methinks, and I made sure I learned the Temptation dodge tech from Rocbouquet to make things a bit easier later on.

Wow, the visuals in this game are awesome. Reminds me of what they did with Pier Solar HD. They should have given the FF iOS ports the same treatment.

how do you unlock the new content? i'm on my fourth generation and i haven't seen hide nor hair of the maze of memories or whatever, but my orchard already hit its second upgrade

edit: nevermind, looked it up. they, um, perhaps did not put much effort into creating this. but i guess that's fair, it was originally for feature phones so.

Generation changes are based on number of battles fought, right? I've got two scenarios under my belt with this Empress but can't seem to trigger a gen change, which would be great so I don't lose these skills due to LP Death.

EDIT: yep, that seemed to do it. I had a save before I triggered the end of the scenario and I fought some battles to get it to change generation. Sweet.

Decided to choose a Hunter this time from the Savannah as my leader.

Also, I noticed that a lot of characters will start with 0 MP, but as soon as you assign some spells the number will go up to something usable. The same can't be said about SP, but by attacking I think they will eventually get some SP.

Few questions:

1. I know the SaGa series are known for having deep (and maybe even obtuse) gameplay mechanics, how does this fare compared to the other SaGa games?

2. How would you guys rank this game compared to the other SaGa games? The only SaGa game I've finished in SaGa Frontier.

1. I would say that it's fairly straight forward once you get the hang of it. There's no combo system like in SF or managing monster meat/robot parts/etc. The obtuseness comes from how many different solutions an event will have, and how to achieve the best possible results (all results are not created equal).

2. I'd say it's one of the better games in the series - it's not as weird as Frontier or RS3, and it's one of the few games that feels, well, complete. Like, there's no sense of huge swaths of content that didn't make it into the game.

I agree with a lot of what TurnipFritters said, with a few extra points.

Romancing SaGa 2, so far, does feel more complete than some other games in the series. SaGa Frontier is one of my favorite games, but it does feel like they had to cut some content. Romancing SaGa 2 on the other hand is a bit more simplified, but at the same time, it feels fleshed out as a whole. There is a surprising amount of depth for choice in scenarios and how they play out.

If you liked SaGa Frontier then there is a good chance you will like this game as well. It plays very similarly besides the lack of combos. The LP system is a bit more unforgiving though, because you can't restore them easily. That's really my one complaint so far. If they allowed us to remove characters from the party it would have helped a lot.

I'd say its equally as good as the best games in the series in some way, keeping in mind when the game was made. It has all the interesting, weird lore/conceptual stuff that is present in most of the SaGa games, although I would say it's not quite as weird as Frontier was (like mentioned in the post above).

Also, the mechanics are surprisingly deep for such an old game. It has all the skill sparking, micro-level ups and scaling enemies that were in Frontier. I think you will be able to jump right in (besides the weird mobile touch controls).

So what is up with the
eggshell
that is supposed to be in Savannah?

Already have the potion I need, but wanted to complete the quest, already have the other two items as well.

It's there.
There's an area you can walk into on the east side.
It's needed for a certain quest, if that is your question.

Does anyone know how to remove a party member from your party?

I've been told that the boss of this dungeon is resistant to physical attacks, so I'd like to replace one party member with someone who can cast spells.

Help please!

You can't really remove a character from your party unless they die. And for spells, if you have opened up the magic research area, you can teach spells to anyone and then increase their magic skill and MP by using the skills in battle.

If you aren't that far in yet then, well...

Actually, I think I know what boss you are talking about. You actually don't need magic to kill it. I noticed that my higher level attack skills worked on it. As long as you can keep the damage up higher than its regen rate, and keep your party alive for that long. So you should give it a try.

I know what it is for, the event to get it doesn't seem to be triggering though.

There are multiple ways to get the potion thankfully and I already have one, just wondering how you trigger the event to get the
eggshell.

Thank you. That's a huge weight off my mind.

I shelled out for the magic research area so hopefully that pops up in my town soon. Looking forward to tackling that boss!

You have to talk to a guy in the hut in the southern village and your emperor will ask him where to find it. That'll start the event.

I believe all buildings take
15
battles to be constructed.

Is it the hunter guy you can recruit after bringing the Savannah area under control? I had already talked to everyone in both villages multiple times and nothing.

I wonder if you have to get the dialog before killing the termite queen or something? Either that or a bug I guess.

Maybe? I think the convo I got was the Emperor saying there are too many monsters on the Savannah, then dude talking about the queen, then the Emperor asking if he knew where to find an eggshell.

It's not necessary to get it before the termite queen. I did it after (I think).

Did you talk to the witch yet and request the potion? That's the only other thing I can think of.

Man, this game is so good.

I love it too much. Such a dream its finally out in english.

I hope they follow through with RS3.

I wouldn't mind new updates for ffl1-3 either. Hopefully sprite based.

Yeah I did talk to the witch about the potion during this current generation. I already had one of the components and was able to get the water ingredient as well.

I wonder if my killing the queen 3 generations ago had anything to do with it? Anyway, I think the main quest that the potion quest ties into got delayed big time after I refused to work with the armed merchants 4 generations ago.

It's possible. I accidentally skipped the first volcano quest. I started it, and then went and completed some other quests, came back and it was already in the second phase. Some quests definitely have a generation timer.

EDIT: I also read that the
haunted ship quest
cancels your particular quest out. I haven't gotten that one yet, but I was checking a guide for something else and noticed that.

EDIT 2: Taken from guide:
requirements: "Pirates of North Rongit", "Ludon Highlands 1", "The Hive Queen"
scenarios completed; male character as Emperor.

NOTE: if the scenario "The Haunted Ship" begins before you do "South Sea
Mermaid", then this scenario will be superseded.

That must be it then. I am right in the middle of
the haunted ship quest
which provides an alternative means of getting the potion.

Thanks for helping clear that up.

Interesting... I'll pick it up but I'll wait for the English Vita version as suggested that they're working on it.

I'm assuming this game is 100% true to the original except for the retouched menu and backgrounds.

I kind of regret buying this. Only a little over 2 hours, but it feels like a very basic JRPG, with dry writing and barely any story. Gameplay isn't anything special either, just weird. My initial impression is that it isn't in the same league as FF and DQ.

I dunno, hopefully it gets better.

It's a game that came out originally in 1992. At that time, the complexity/depth of story and gameplay systems was on par, if not a bit higher (imo) than Final Fantasy.

You will probably discover this if you put more hours into it. SaGa games aren't for everyone, but I definitely wouldn't call RS2 a generic jrpg.

It's not as focused on a single narrative as Final Fantasy is, and the dialogue and cutscenes are very short and to the point, but there are a lot of contextual stories that you come across through the world. The game is more like an open-world jrpg (keeping in mind technical limitations at the time) and has a lot of different branches for all the events in the story based on your event choices, your main character, generation, etc. The game doesn't really guide you much, you have to kind of figure things out on your own, or read a guide, lol.

It's true that SaGa isn't for everyone. it has a lot mechanics that can click with the user or not. I'm guessing SaGa Frontier is probably the most accessible SaGa game until now with Romancing SaGa 2 right alongside it (based on the comments). If SaGa Frontier doesn't click with you, then might as well forget the other SaGa games.

I think the most accessible SaGa game is probably SaGa 2/FF Legend 2. But it's a lot simpler than the kinds of things they tried in the Romancing and SaGa Frontier series. SaGa Frontier is still a really buggy and unfinished game.

I'd also recommend The Last Remnant for a SaGa-like experience with absolutely the most polish out of any of them, but with even less explanation about the systems than any of them as well. Fortunately there's a good wiki for that.

Yeah, that's true. The core design is pretty similar. Romancing SaGa 2 does start off pretty accessible, with the first several generations. There are not multiple character scenarios to choose from off the bat either.

I would say it's probably more accessible than Frontier, actually. Frontier has some scenarios where it will basically drop you in and say 'figure it out,' and hopefully you've already gotten used to the game systems by then.

If you've played SaGa Frontier II, I actually feel like there are some stylistic similarities, although SFII is a much more linear game than this one is.

EDIT: That being said, the series has always been out of reach of accessibility for most players, at least in the west. I'm actually pretty surprised that several of the SaGa games sold well in Japan, but thank god for that.

It was to the point where when a new SaGa game came out, I just didn't bother reading reviews because I knew that the reviewer was going to trash it or just close up to it completely.

That or SaGa 3, since that one has standard leveling and gear.
