Digitimes: NX mass production delayed to early 2017, VR integration, hybrid(?)

Not too sure about the hybrid talk since we've heard the contrary from Iwata before he died, unless Kimishima tried to undo that decision. Though it not making it to March 2017 wouldn't surprise me.

If mass production was not to start until early 2017, would that imply March is not achievable?

(edit - Though I think we all knew this would be the case, and that Nintendo were just saying "march" to give the shareholders something)

Eh...I don't really think this is going to be accurate. I mean they just announced the release month about a month ago. I wouldn't expect them to delay it now, especially since that delay was probably something they did last minute already.

But it's Nintendo, so who the hell knows.

I don't think it would be completely unreasonable as I've felt whether or not it's a core feature that they would want to keep that avenue open just in case. In my scenario they'd partner with an existing VR company to assume no risk of headset hardware (if it panned out well they could bring it in house the next-gen) but simply make sure the platform is VR-ready for devs who are shipping that. That said as a Digitimes rumor, I don't believe any of it.

The main thing for me is while I don't think Nintendo needs to fastest tech available in their box I do feel like their is a baseline.

Problem is every quarter they miss that baseline moves up a bit. What would have been acceptable Summer of 16 is different than Fall is different than Winter 17 or Spring 17 ect... ect...

Shit moves fast these days. Doubly so in the mobile world.

I would like to believe that NeoGAF is a little smarter than this. Especially after all the prior NX BS it has fallen for in the past six months. A shame that we have to endure another 6 more months of additional BS.

To me it looks like Nintendo has no clear idea where they want to go with the NX, and that's never a good thing.

Right, which is incredibly prohibitively expensive for a controller/interface device that has to be included with a console. Even if they removed most of the parts that make it a phone (just kept sensors ect) they then have to add the cost of the GearVR like headset to mount it in and really a external camera to make it worthwhile for a console. Lets say they manage to pull off a entire headset worth including for $150, which would be some accomplishment. That leaves them next to nothing to spend on the console, controllers ect Yet they're doing all this as a after thought, its a crazy idea. IF VR is part of NX then they aren't adding it, it would have to have been in from the start.

ARRRRRGH The Hybrid Rumours are Bullshit. Nintendo right now like they have done for the past 30 years are making a handheld gaming device. Due to modern technological advances. A Gaming handheld made in 2017 using "Industry leading chips" could quite comfortably be more powerful then the Xbox 1 and run a basic Gear VR level experience

Essentially the NX is going to be a Vita. That eager customers will be able to buy a 50 dollar plastic accessory for (like the Wii's baseball bat or wheel ect) to attatch it to your head for VR (if this is true)

Nintendo wouldn't need the external camera because just like every phone/the Wii U game pad. The internal accelerometers would handle positioning. Like every phone it would have some form of Bluetooth receiver. Which would make it compatible with the Wiimotes and Nunchucks that people already own, if Nintendo wanted a room scale experience. This device would also be compatible with the Wii U pro controller via the same Bluetooth reciever for a seated experience.

That would price the NX at 400 dollars for a console, a pro controller and a VR solution. Roughly half the price of Sonys entry level VR experience, and the high profit margins that Nintendo would make on the VR Accessories could've used to offset the devices initial low profit margains

Yeah I don't think anyone here would be truly shocked if NX slips to an early fall 2017 launch. We're in for a nasty Nintendo drought in that case though.

For people's gullibility or their inability to launch this Holiday?

Both

In all honesty though, the rumours/bullshit etc are all because we know next to nothing about a machine which is apparently launching in 9 months time, and Nintendos inability or unwillingness to reveal/communicate even when this device will be revealed is just a sign of their ineptness imo

I blame Nintendo!

For people's gullibility or their inability to launch this Holiday?

They had the ability to drop the Wii U like it's hot, but they seems incapable of sharing NX details.

This is the climate Nintendo created.

Plus rightly or wrongly sharing a release window of the last possible month in their fiscal quarter as their only info didn't do them any favors IMO.

I'm not sure they can afford 2 years of no software or hardware sales for the console platform. That stock drop.

Why would this mean it isn't shipping in March? If it's accurate (which I doubt because it mentioned that hybrid crap we know is false), Nintendo chose to manufacture far fewer consoles than originally planned. This means they can get away with starting manufacturing closer to launch, since they won't need as many for launch.

Everything. Videogames. Might as well since they "revived" the market/industry.

Might as well blame them for pending epidemic disease, war and famine too while we're here.

All kidding aside. They aren't managing this very well and they never have been good at these long term messages unlike Sony or MS.

I get it, they had to say something when they announced mobile games, but they should have had a better communication and marketing plan than, "we'll talk about it when we're ready." Because in this globally connected internet age, you can't do that anymore.

I'll give them some time for Iwata's death, but the plan should have been in place with contingencies just in case anything happened. That way Kimishima steps in and tehy continue discussing their plans.

But honestly it seems like the only plan they have is to keep not saying anything until they feel they can reveal it, which ultimately leads to FUD like this being spread or the MH thing that gets out of hand.

Hell I don't think people even need a full reveal, but they'd like some kind of communication, any kind really. So its only going to get worse.

Sucks because IMO this was the EXACT problem with Wii U.

- one group wanted a "Wii HD" with BC
- one group wanted to bring the DS dual screen concept to the console
- one group wanted a modern HD console with traditional controls
- one group insisted it should once again fit into the "3 DVD cases" form factor for some stupid fucking reason

I was hoping this time around Nintendo would pick one idea and focus on doing that really well, instead of trying to make everybody happy.

Someone needs to learn how to say "no".

If it's delayed to make changes so it's more competitive with the new rumoured ps4 and Xbox then I'm in.

Just praying that zelda is going to be Mind blowing!

Or maybe, and hear me out on this one, the reason that things sound like they're all over the place is that most of the rumors, including this one, are untrue? Crazy idea, but I think I'm on to something. :V

Nintendo just needs to come out and say something, since the rampant pessimism over the company means that only negative rumors, no matter how little sense they make, gain traction and that hurts them irreparably.

Nintendo not announcing at E3 just means there is more time for rubbish to be spouted by everyone online with a "source". In the long run, I can't see how all this is anything but damaging towards Nintendo and the NX.

No not really, because they already started ball rolling so even just a date for the announcement and something other than really vague statements would help.

They are always overly cautious about their tech being stolen

- So, what's NX? :)
- Well you know, we need to make money, Wii U was a disaster and Wii wasn't able to create a loyal fanbase so, yeah, we are making a hybrid console. NX will be a home console, mobile console and just yesterday we decided to add that thing we considered not funny and antisocial, the VR.
- W.. wait what? This is weird, what's the audience you're aiming at with NX?
- Everyone.
- Ahah of course, but what do you really mean with everyone?

I can think of a way. Not revealing the system is keeping Sony and Microsoft from copying the NX's new technology. Remember, the NX has something hugely innovative about it, that Nintendo said is on the same level as motion controls were with the Wii. And both Sony and Microsoft are releasing new consoles soon. After the Wii controller reveal, Sony crammed motion controls into the PS3 Sixaxis at the last second, this silence could be an attempt to keep that from happening again.

It does?

I've mentioned VR compatibility in my hopes for an eventual iteration of NX that supports such technology, IF THAT TECHNOLOGY TAKES OFF.

I honestly don't believe that Nintendo should be chasing VR just yet though, especially if it means another "3D in 3DS" or "Gamepad for Wii U" markup that would decrease the accessibility of the new system(s).

Anyway, grain of salt. I want to hear the facts from Nintendo themselves at this point.

Without even thinking about the hardware needed for Nintendo to do VR, this idea is pretty nonsensical for the explicit reason that Nintendo does not make games suited to VR.

The best VR games are first person. Nintendo has more or less 1 first person IP, and that is Metroid. I'm sure they could come up with all kinds of variations on their other franchises to get them in first person, or some sort of well functioning third person VR, but it just doesn't seem like something they would bank on.

Maybe they've decided to bump up the NX specs to allow it to be VR capable in the future, but I just don't see Nintendo themselves focusing on VR at all.

#TeamBS

Edit:

The article's source could very well be BS but it could also simply be their sources "guessing" what the final product will be based on the production orders. I really wouldn't put any stock into this article.

Only thing I'd be willing to believe from that rumour is the production date slip, rest just sounds like flinging shit against the wall.

If the NX is delayed until fall 2017, does that mean Zelda on Wii U would be as well? This whole Zelda U thing is a joke.

why would they care about sony having implemented a feature unanimously regarded as useless

They would have communicated by now on the NX, and wouldn't have skipped e3, if things were set in stone for some time already.

Everything points out to Nintendo going all over the place, and thus nowhere at the same time.

This is getting as bad as when Nintendo waited too long to supplant the Wii with a "Wii HD". They're on the verge of putting themselves in an awkward situation again.

As before, I will hold judgement until Nintendo's 76th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders on June 29, 2016. If NX mass production is indeed delayed to early 2017, I'm expecting some information on this matter during the shareholder meeting or shortly after.

The NX theory of it being a hybrid system should have immediately been put to rest after Nintendo revealed the codename of the handheld to be "MH".
