I saw this a few months ago, and loved it! These sort of absurdist stories are my favorite. Laughed and winced really hard when
that guy smashed his nose in the pool to pretend that he got chronic nosebleeds too.

The acting in it was noticeably stiff, to the point where it had to have been intentional. I figured it was supposed to give the film a distancing effect to put a bigger emphasis on the film's themes (similar to Brecht's plays). Makes me really want to check out Dogtooth at some point.

I took it as a part of the fact that society had become so legislated that people had lost the ability to emote well.

For those who have seen it: Just how
brutal is the violence near the end of the film? Ever since our kid was born my wife doesn't handle violence as well as she used to.

Saw it last night. Definitely enjoyed it, but had some issues. Here's my review:

A fascinating future is showcased in The Lobster. A land full of baleful polymorphs and necessary couples. Yorgos Lanthimos' world of the City and the Hotel is endlessly intriguing and ridiculously creative. The humor embedded within this world is provocative and amusing in a very dry manner. Sadly though, the film is hopelessly in love with its world, rather than the characters, and Colin Farrell's David, our gateway to the world, is rather bland. He is completely passive, serving more as a tour guide than a character, until the final third of the movie, when he finally gets some light agency. Likewise, the other characters, although amusing, exist solely as plot devices or representatives of the wacky world. Yet, the world is so enthralling and imaginative that marking these as major slights seems unfair to the overall experience. The Lobster is an amusing world wrapped up in an okay film, but yet, this is one world definitely worth exploring for a bit.

The end's not that bad, earlier parts are worse. My wife is the same way post children as well, I've never read anything on that--but I wonder if something biochemically actually cause that. I'm probably a bit more sentimental myself.

Hard to say. There's not much violence, but when it's shown, it's very shocking. The worst part
is a shot of a dog that's been kicked to death
. It only last a few seconds, but it's pretty brutal.

I thought it was pretty great.

But why did the loners have rules? Why did Loner chief still visit her parents? What were the Loners supposed to do at the yacht?

I'm not sure why they still had rules. Probably a metaphor on how single people still follow certain customs and rituals...or something. But I think they went to the city to get supplies. David went on the yacht to reveal that the guy with the limp was faking nosebleeds so that the couple would breakup and become loners. Same reason why the leader gave the hotel manager an unloaded gun to shoot his wife.

Ok, not just the end but the film in general. How did she take it?

It was good, equal parts funny and devastating. Came across as a bit critical of how much emphasis society puts on relationships while also saying some people are loners for a reason. Guess it had its cake and ate it too. I loved how many animals wandered into the frame in the second half.

My thoughts on the ending:
He choked on the paper towels.

If this is anything like In Bruges I'm in 100%.

It's nothing like McDonagh's work. If you liked In Bruges, you should try Seven Psychopaths. If you want to get a taste of Lanthimos then watch Alps or Dogtooth.

Does anyone get turned into an animal in the movie?

Can the process just turn someone into a half animal beast?

I'll take Werewolf for $5000, Alex.

One scene she just looked away and told me to let her know when it was over. A lot of cringing throughout. On balance, I think she still liked it because itactially invokes discussion on the subject.

Let myself settle on some thoughts for a few days.

Really great film, the deadpan performances really sold a lot of the humor, while also giving a dark undertone to the reality this world presents. You have to wonder how this world came to be, it's quite interesting.

Some pretty brutal scenes as well, visually and audibly.

Overall though, I really didn't know what to expect before going in. It's definitely a weird film but that's why I loved it.

Yes - and it is also a metaphor on how people today are unable to reach out, it's a physical take on the stifle behavior of people in today's society.

I had a long talk with my gf when we first saw the movie. We find it an excellent film (and as a Greek I am very proud of Lanthimos), but we both thought that it is time for him to experiment with different styles or genres, otherwise he might become slightly stereotyped. Not that this is too bad, mind you.

I really didn't like it. I get how it's supposed to be comedy, but I think they play it a little too straight.

It was supposed to be "the fuck is this?!" funny, right?

I interpreted it as
the loners being representations of people who hate hanging out with couples when they're single.

Finally saw this last night and I've been thinking about it all day. It's pretty much internet dating taken to the logical extreme. Fantastic film that I definitely need to see again before I really start analysing it.

Saw it today at the arclight in Hollywood, really liked it! I was thinking about the very first scene of the movie, not sure if I fully understood it. Was it directly related to the following scene with Colin?

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
Looking at the box office thread, I'm kind of shocked that this movie has made $6mil+. It must be getting great word of mouth, very good news.

Just finished watching it and that didn't enter my mind but that totally makes sense and is hilarious.

Anyway, I loved the movie. Laughed out loud multiple times and really enjoyed the entire metaphor. It would make a good double feature with Her.

I saw it a couple weeks ago and enjoyed it, but I think it's one of those movies that even though I enjoyed it, I don't really have the desire to watch it again. The trailers gave me the impression that it would be a like a quirky Wes Anderson film, but it was actually pretty dark.

Just saw this. I thought it was a good movie. It kind of fell apart towards the end for me. I loved the dry tone of the film though, I've been told I have a very dry sense of humor.

My wife fucking hated it with a passion. She said it's very "Best In Show-ish", but she was mistaken and meant very "I Heart Huckabees-ish", as that was the first movie we watched together at my recommendation. She still loses this battle though because she bought Cool World thinking it would be an awesome movie we could watch together.

Man, I loved when Colin was with that heartless woman and being all mean.
Kicking the girl in the chin and then telling her "hey I did you a favor, now you have a limp like your Dad"
. Good stuff.

Went into this blind without knowing anything about the director or seeing any of his other films with my dad on father's day.

Welp

The Most Dangerous Yes Man
I would give it a B for effort. But there was something missing that pushed it into the really great level.

Excellent movie. Really nails so many things of modern societal pressures of marriage. The fact that the whole tone of the film resembles that of an awkward first date is amazing.

I enjoyed it.

The scene at the pool was so funny. Never thought Colin would ever make me laugh.

Pretty weird and enjoyable movie.

I had the exact same thought while I watched the ending - perfectly suitable way to end this film, on a dark joke.
Loved the animals too!

Edit: all together though I think the setting wasn't strong enough to sustain an entire film. As social satire it was good for a few jokes, and the acting and cinematography held it together, but as a story I can't say it was all that intriguing.

Perhaps I should give it some more time to sink in and further ponder upon it, but currently it feels like it was a bit lacking in depth.
