Rumor: "Untitled Spiderman PS4 Project" incoming

If it is Insomniac then that pretty much kills my enthusiasm over this rumor. Not that Insomniac is a bad shop or anything, but I've only really enjoyed their Resistance games and I don't see a lot of that translating well to a Spidey game. Sucker Punch seemed like such a great fit to me but maybe it just wasn't meant to be.

Why should Sucker Punch do a good Spider-Man game? They have done nothing with swing mechanics to compare and their climbing, the closest to wallcrawling, is the most simplistic shit in the industry, so they dont have anything proved in the most important gameplay mechanics.

Some superhero-ish pedigree I suppose. I don't see why Insomniac would at least be any better suited for Spider-Man. I think for me, I've simply enjoyed more of Sucker Punch's output than Insomniac so when the rumor first started about SP, that sounded good to me.

If it's true that Insomniac is developing, that is a pretty stark turnaround from their "departure" from Sony a few years ago. They left behind exclusively developing for Playstation to own their IP; they got Fuse and Sunset Overdrive as a result (both of which probably don't have a lot of value). Now they'd develop an exclusive game in an IP that the platform holder doesn't even own?

I guess SO2 could be in development but I'm not sure why it would be. I know they are doing some small things with non-traditional publishers.

Neither of those games did well commercially. Ironically enough, R&C PS4 seems to be their best selling game since...well, R&C PS3. Sony could be contracting them to make the game (which will probably sell well, as Spidey games generally do), and then take their cut of the profits to fund SO2.

It might as well since both studios seem to be pretty close.

Never played Spiderman 2, but a lot of people seem to like the swing mechanics.
So I searched for a gameplay video on youtube and found this one for Amazing Spiderman 2 (I know, wrong game but doesn't matter for my question):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9kr9ZhydK0

Why does that video has over 38m views, lol? Did (a part of) this video become kind of a meme or something? The title also says video game, so people surely couldn't confuse it with a movie trailer.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Its going to be a Spiderman dating sim where you choose between MJ, Gwen Stacey, She Hulk, The Human Torch, or Deadpool.

Sunset Overdrive always irked me because it's a game that looks like it should play a lot faster than it does.

I want to feeeeel the speed of acrobatting around the world as spiderman.

I really want to see Insomniac implement an advanced physics system for web-swinging AND character models. Something like the Euphoria engine in R* games.

Imagine web-swinging at 80 mph and hitting a lamp post.

Lol I can see that getting old. Watching Nico loose his footing everytime he came into contact with something was beyond annoying. :p

Yeah, you'd think he had banana peels taped to his shoes the way he slipped on everything. They'd need to tone it down, but the rigid-body dynamics are there.

They toned it down a bit for gta5. Does rockstar license their engines? Could be interesting.

This, Gravity Rush, Mirror's Edge; Why do people always think the stuff that screams "MOTION SICKNESS" is going to get VR support?

I would imagine Sony would take the risk for a multimedia force like Spiderman to mitigate motion sickness to push their VR. If they wanted to, of course.

Dunno what Gravity Rush or Mirror's Edge has to do with it.

Not that I know of, but the animation engine they use actually doesn't "belong" to them. It's NaturalMotion's Euphoria engine, and has been implemented in a couple of other games:

The Force Unleashed
Backbreaker
(lol)

I understand the apprehension over this being some VR movie tie in piece...

I personally want a Sucker Punch Spider-man, it could be legitimately awesome.

Saying that, imagine looking down at your arms and you're Spidey, reach up and point at a nearby building, pull the Move trigger... fire a web, it latches on, you hit the "Move" button and you leap off, swinging via physics, with your other arm you aim for another building further down the street, you fire a web, pull on your first web to help reorient your trajectory before letting it go... you can picture the rest.

WOULD BE FRICKIN' AWESOME!

Is this rumored to still be a PS4 exclusive?

Might be the game that finally convinces me to get a PS4.

Sucker Punch or Insomniac, whichever studio it is, they are both perfect for this project.

Both aren't allowed to be in games made after Contest of Champions thanks to a brand-wide X-Men/F4 ban mandated by Marvel.

What makes people think it might be a Sony project (ergo PS4 exclu) is the guy who posted (online resume? Linkedin? It's been removed since) that he had been doing mo-cap at a Sony Studio for a Spiderman game.

Whatever this game turns out to be, I dread the moment when you see that they included all of the best Spidey costumes and 90% of them are paid dlc.

I mean, Sony and Disney seem to have a healthy relationship, Spidey in CW and Spidey on a Sony console could very well happen I guess, since Disney also left publishing games.

Well way to shoot down my dreams. Though now that I think about it seriously a Spiderman game with a focus on balancing his daily life and responsibilities as Peter Parker the student and young man as well as stopping crime and fighting super villians as Spidey. Would be really cool if they handled it in like a Persona type manner where you have to choose whether to go investigate a possible drug ring with Daredevil or go deliver some Pizzas to make some cash to go out on a date later that night.

I mean, what I just posted? They're high motion games that people love to request/suggest VR support for without considering the parties involved would be opening themselves up to all kinds of lawsuits.

I don't see Sony putting VR support in any Spider-man with web swinging. It's not like the game needs to that to sell. Hell, with a brand at that level it doesn't even need to be a good game at all, really.

I wonder if it'll be canon to the MCU

Hopefully not. The movies themselves barely benefit from being in a canon and the TV shows go ignored altogether, so it's a sure bet the game would. They're better off just making a Spider-man game with a killer world, story, and aesthetic all its own.

In the worst case it will be a The Force Unleashed or Aliens Colonial Marines and Isolation Situation, where its just marketing bullshit to sell the game

Might not be exclusive to PSVR, but PSVR will support a theater mode, where your HMD will be the screen to which you can play a game on. So technically, Gravity Rush 2 and Mirror's Edge Catalyst should be compatible with PSVR, but not in the sense of being immersed in that world through VR.

Was that ban ever officially or publicly made by Marvel or Disney? I thought that was just a fan theory?

Unless you're talking about the movie/tv rights?

I'm confused.

Well... in some ways Insomniac Games's humor could be comparable or considered similar to Spidey's humor. So, I am pretty confident they could nail the style (art vs story). As for Sucker Punch, the way I see their work on a Spider-man take... is that they would nail it on a visual and technical level (since they already have experience with superhero games that includes important traversal and climbing mechanics and animations).

If it's Sucker Punch hopefully they've figured out how to actually make decent side content.

Hopefully not, I'd rather they have more material to work with.

That's my only concern so far... if it is indeed Sucker Punch (but it is not them). I also fear that some of side quests/content could feel gimmicky.
