Resident Evil 7 Biohazard announced (PC/XB1/PS4), Jan 2017, PS4 demo out now

That RE7 song in the trailer is pretty disturbing.

Go tell Aunt Rhody,
Go tell Aunt Rhody,
Go tell Aunt Rhody
The old gray goose is dead.

The one she's been saving,
The one she's been saving,
The one she's been saving
To make a feather bed.

The goslings are mourning,
The goslings are mourning,
The goslings are mourning,
Because their mother's dead.

The old gander's weeping,
The old gander's weeping,
The old gander's weeping,
Because his wife is dead.

She died in the mill pond,
She died in the mill pond,
She died in the mill pond
From standing on her head.

Go tell Aunt Rhody,
Go tell Aunt Rhody,
Go tell Aunt Rhody
The old gray goose is dead.

Who sings this version of the song?

RE6 sold well, not reaching 5, but it was beaten pretty mercilessly by critics. And the general criticisms from press and fans was that it was too action driven and was missing the genuine horror and scares. I still enjoyed those games, I'd even say they're really fun action games. And that's the problem, they moved so far away from the roots of the series, they weren't even horror games anymore. RE4 started this movement, but it at least kept close with the atmosphere and scares. Even though there were a bunch of crazy actions set-pieces, it still had plenty of moments that were genuinely scary, even after gunning down hordes of foes and fighting big bosses.

All of them are horror games, just not all of them are survival horror.
Also dunno how anyone could become physically scared of any RE game cept maybe REmake...you are way too powerful in RE4 (heck I'd say RE2) onwards too really be scared of anything.

First person turns the whole franchise upside down.

You weren't playing as yourself, you were playing as iconic RE characters. But now this will change. There are enough Horror games with first person out there already. No need for RE to rehash that now.

Also for people with motion sickness it's stupid. Not everyone is able to play a first person game without getting headaches unless its total comic style like Borderlands,

I agree about motion sickness, it's an unfortunate problem, but that's not a problem isolated to Resident Evil. At all.

It doesn't turn the franchise upside down at all. First person in of itself has no effect on item management, ammo limitations, locked in locations and key-requiring doors, or the strength of horror presentation. All of which is simply down to the skill of the designers.

I just don't fucking understand. If they're going this route why the hell didn't they just make Resident Evil 3.5? They could do much of what they're doing here, but it still be Resident Evil.

I didn't see it before but RE has really gone back to its roots

Wow, I couldn't believe that teaser.

Are we really going back 20 years in game design?
No places to take cover, no shit to shoot.

There's a

in the trailer and an
axe in the teaser you can attack with.

Thats a bit of narrow minded way to think of it, but I agree FPS design has been around for years and while some see it as refreshing I see it as old restricted tat game design best left for low budget titles because amateur devs can't get the camera and collision detection working in 3rd Person its best left for shooters, luckily VR fixes a few of FP's problems but then VR brings it's own limitations too.

Why do you need cover when fighting zombies? You should be running away. Plus, most zombies shouldn't drop ammo. Ammo should be hard to come by.

Has it been confirmed that RE7 will be fully first person? I mean it could be first person only for VR? We've seen so little and people are already on barricades saying this will be the shittiest shit ever.

Since surprisingly, no one has done this, here's a Resident Evil 7 trailer analysis. I am taking a look at the interesting parts of both the Sony E3 2016 trailer and Capcom's channel trailer, both of which are actually different. But first, Sony's conference version, as it has a lot more unseen stuff.

First, from Sony's conference trailer. A few things you guys may have missed.

The words fade out, and this forms in orange briefly from KITCHEN:

I don't think that's supposed to be a 7, it definitely looks like a 1. And notably the trailer fades out with this and does the colored orange thing the game's main logo does. Could there potentially be some deeper connection to RE1 than we realize? Or could it mean something else?

Now, most of the trailer is a slightly reworked version of the demo for RE7, but there are a few interesting bits when he inserts the video tape and multiple video feeds play at once:

The Sony conference camera zooms out a bit, and the whole stage reflects different trailer elements, but in this shot we can see some incredibly orange forest (and it seems to be gameplay, someone slowly walks through it slowly), and directly below it some bigger dude approaches what looks like someone laying down on the ground? It's hard to make out, but definitely stuff we have not seen.

NOW, this one is not going to make much sense with a still shot, but makes more sense in motion.

The top-left shows that in some segment of the game, we're going to be playing as a black character, which is cool.

In the middle right, there is a section where you DEFINITELY drive a vehicle. You can see the steering wheel, and then an option for you to smash the window and a car rearview mirror, so there's some sort of vehicle section.

This one took me a while to make out, but in the bottom-right there is some zombie(?) on fire who is jittering around ala Jacob's Ladder style almost like crazy and seems to be able to move super fast.

In the bottom-left, I can hardly make it out but it looks like blood cells going through a vein.

This one has a few interesting shots too. In the bottom left, we have a fatter cop character in what looks like a parking garage who's lights are flashing red and blue from the cop car. He seems to approach us with some hostility, keeping his hand on the holster of his gun.

Now, the middle two to the right are the two point of interests in this trailer. Again, this is hard to tell without motion, but in this shot, we see two similar enemies to the burning one I described. It seems a common enemy in this is a zombie thing that has jittery heads and limbs that can move surprisingly fast. We see a large zombie thing move by fast at the end of a tunnel looking area, and we see a zombie-looking thing mercillesly bashing itself with its jittering limbs against our slower protagonist. I'm finding the fact how FAST these enemies look interesting, since frankly our character seems quite slow. I'm not kidding either, the two in this shot seem like they're at least four times faster than our MC, and since they're the only identifiable enemy I see in the trailer, they may in fact be one of the main enemies in the game. From the blurry perception, they seem like fast Jacob's Ladder Zombies, but one of them looks way too big to be a regular zombie.

---

Some misc observations off the blurry footage, if I spot more, I shall report.

This teaser is just like P.T,it's not a 100% representation of what the real game is.
Pretty sure we can fight back in the full game,i asssume they don't want to spoil the game by showing footage.
Think about it,the release date is not that far off and we don't even know who are the main characters(we play as random survivors in this demo by the look of it).
The only thing we know for sure is that it's a first person game because of VR.
Of course, this is my opinion and i could be completely wrong.

Somehow it won't surprise me if this somehow ties in to PT and death stranding (with all the dead carcasses and such) and in the end we are all trolled by Kojima.

end crazy rant-

Do the red numbers on the boxes mean anything?

This is a teaser and doesn't seem indicative of the final game at all. That said if they decide to go first person with this. I'm all down. Nail atmosphere, make it scary. I could honestly care less if I'm playing as Leon, Jill, Claire or whoever at this point. The story has gotten so big and ridiculous it doesn't even matter anymore.

Besides we have REmake 2 coming. I'll give capcom a shot by taking RE in a different direction.

Surprisingly the reception doesn't seem to be very big. Considering the wait since RE6 for a new RE game.
When RE6 got announced that shit was huge.

People on my twitter are hyped for this, and I even see some RE fans trying to do breakdowns.

E3 just has tons of information coming out. That said I'm shocked this game is coming out in February

Yes, shooting and getting into cover is the essence of gameplay innovation

Capcom no longer has any idea what to do with their franchise. Any optimism that I had is long gone by now.

People who talk about Resident Evil having exploration and puzzles and somehow consider this aspect a trendsetter need to look back during the time Resident Evil was released. We had Alone in the Dark which was pretty much an exploration game having survival horror and puzzles and Resident Evil definitely took inspiration from it for that aspect. But what made it stand out, what made it unique, was its characters and the boss battles.

When people look back at the series, they will fondly remember the boss fights. The infected shark and the huge snake along with the Tyrant were iconic. So were the characters like Wester, Chris, Barry and Jill. This continued into Resident Evil 2-3 with each having bigger and badder version of villains. For all the hate Resident Evil 4-5-6 get, they stuck very close to this formula from the old Resident Evil games. Cheesy and crazy boss fights mixed with a cast that was loved by fans.

Maybe my reaction is premature but they had one whole trailer along with the final release date and it showed nothing like Resident Evil is known for.

The other thing that elevated my fear was the focus on VR. No matter what Capcom says, Resident Evil VII essentially looks like a game that was designed for VR in mind. The other thing that it appears to have took inspiration from are games like Amnesia and Outlast, because apparently they are so popular among the YouTubers who love to post their overreactions over these games on YouTube.

I may be wrong about this one, maybe having full price might mean Capcom is going to make a meaty campaign which delivers the classic Resident Evil experience. Boss fights, memorable characters, cheesy story and exploration with a focus on Survival horror. Maybe they will just say fuck to all and go full Outlast and Amnesia and instead try to make an experience fit for VR. I would love to see the former being true but the E3 trailer, which showcased the game, didn't really follow this tone at all.

I think this demo is very clearly designed to do things: First, and foremost, it's designed to excite the PT crowd. Having Silent Hills ripped away from us left a huge void in the horror-loving crowd; I don't think most that were excited have really fully gotten over it at this point. So to have a demo released during E3 of a Resident Evil that might attempt to claw at that kind of atmosphere is kind a megaton.

Second, it's a tech demo. For real. I mean, when you play it, the first thing you'll notice that is distinctly *unlike* PT is the framerate -- it's 60 fps, maybe higher, which is necessary for VR. But unlike most VR games and demos shown up to this point, it's on a different visual level -- it doesn't have quite the photo-realism sheen that PT had, but it's attempt is actually pretty good, and this means a VR-enabled game that might actually look great. But how do they know unless they test the waters? If people don't complain about the visual fidelity of the game (some will), it will probably make them feel like they made the right choice.

All that said (which is probably stuff you don't want to hear), here's some stuff you probably do want to hear: There is 0 indication in this demo, in my opinion, that this game is going to be the Outlast or Amnesia of Resident Evil. Hell, there's even a
weapon
hidden in the game -- which is simply not compatible with what both of those games attempt to do. It actually feels really good to use to, even though as of right now nobody has figured out what to use it *on*. In Amnesia and Outlast, it's stealth, stealth, stealth. All the time, erryday, because those games don't have systems for anything else. In this demo there isn't even a *lean* functionality, much less a look behind you functionality. There are no places to hide -- no beds to slide under, or closets to open. There's no indication of any stealth systems at all -- there are, however, many indications of a competent action system in place, even if it's not used in this demo much.

What we're looking at, I'd imagine, is a game on the scale / size of RE1 -- a large place to explore, underground connections, various smaller houses on a estate, puzzles to solve, and -- yes -- bosses and enemies to kill. You can sprint in the game, and there are various active slots for weapons (and an inventory). I'd expect a typewriter (or something a bit more modern) to return. I'd expect an item box to stash all your stuff. And based on the less-than-witty dialogue in the demo, I'd expect characters that are silly, set against a backdrop of horror that is decidedly not. I have no idea why anyone wouldn't expect any of this based on this demo -- it makes too much sense not to have everything people liked in the original, but in first person, which, while it may take some getting used to, can probably provide a better action-oriented experience in portions of the game than people might expect.

But yes, expect them to actually try and sell the horror angle a bit more. It's going to be a darker game, probably not as funny. Probably the action will be a lot more personal, and less 4 or 5 things headed for you at once. But I'd really wait and see before getting to worried here -- it's still Resident Evil, and that means something more than what is on show in what is arguably a tech demo meant to test the waters in numerous ways. Who knows, maybe there will even be another demo showing off a different side, a more familiar side, of the game.
