So ... someone cut my brake line

What the fuck, I've never been this worried before. It's had to have been cut for about a month now, but holy shit. Basically I noticed my breaks were weaker than usual, checked on my brake fluid, noticed it was near empty and figured "fuck one of the lines rusted out" (I've had to slowly replace them since getting my car last year) so I took it into my mechanic this afternoon. Went to go pick my car up an hour ago and I've never seen him so dead serious before, and he said he hasn't seen this shit in years. Someone deliberately cut the lines to my brakes. What. The. Fuck. I don't even know who would do something like this. I'm on good terms with all of my neighbors, and don't even have enough good friends to warrant having any 'enemies'. I have no fucking clue who would do something like this. Now I'm just sitting here worrying about how easily my life, my friends lives, and my girlfriend's life were all in complete danger because of this.

I thought this was a Mafia movie trope. People actually do this? Is it like slashing tires and keying car doors?

Damn, that's fucking scary bro. Somebody is trying to kill you. Maybe report it to the authorities?

Not to be too paranoid but watch what you are eating and drinking if somebody is indeed trying to kill you. If we've learned anything from multi-media, it's that the person doing these things to you are somebody close.

Are brake lines still exposed/easily accessible on newer vehicles? I would have thought this is something that becomes more difficult to achieve as automobiles change over time.

Do you trust your mechanic?
Not trying to cast doubt on him if he's a good guy but my dad has meet some mechanics that have tried to do scummy things like that before.

When you say lines you mean both lines going to both the front and rear brakes?
Can you post a picture of the old cut ones?

I would report that asap.

Also, go through a mental list of people you gave/offered rides to in the past month.

Anyone that jumped in that car is either innocent or crazy. Anyone kinda hesitant and declined? Put them on the list for phase two of the investigation.

Hahaha yeah, um, no...

If someone cut a brake line, you would immediately lose all hydraulic breaking (i.e handbrake would be the only bit working but only if its a cable operated handbreak).

Unless they managed to magically put the tiniest of pin prick holes in a line somewhere youve either hit road debris or its simply cracked very slowly over time.

Do teens really care enough to do that? They're prolly too busy listening to electronic music and masturbating.

I used to take out air from tyres in my days. I'm sure some instincts never change.

Deflating tyres is way too tame compared to cutting a brake line though! Unless it's a teen who just learned about brake lines and how to slash them, I wouldn't count on them either.

Probably some neighborhood teen

Considering I have a horrible habit of leaving my doors unlocked because my neighborhood is trustworthy, some teen would have actually taken shit out of my car (I don't ever have anything in there regardless) so I feel pretty safe discrediting a kid.
How does he know it was on purpose? Could have been snapped by something in the road.

It cut just enough for the fluid to slowly build up and leak out. It was precise.
It was me, Static.

I know, I know. Now's not the time for jokes. That comes later.
Not even mad.
take a look at the cut, is it new or old? maybe you can CSI the exact time

It had to have been around late May. That was the last time I checked and refilled my brake fluid.

So op needs a panic room or no? Speak English man.

What the fuck, man. That shit goes straight to a police report, no matter what.

Stay safe.

This is one of the most worrisome thread I read on GAF.

I would sell the car and get a different car if I were you. At least that will eliminate the people not that close to you.

This and this--I'm not car expert by any means at all but is it even possible to cut a brake line and have it slowly degrade over a month? Isn't it much more likely something just randomly punctured it?

An ex-girlfriend and I lived directly across the street from a high school a couple years back. We both had vehicles, and they were both vandalized several times over the course of the seven months we lived there. I'm not one-hundred-percent positive, but let's face it, a lot of teens can be little shits when they know they won't get caught. It's just how it goes.

Goddamn Static, your security is just like Star Labs. Fix that shit.

In all seriousness, you said it was precise. How much do you trust your mechanic?

This actually isn't that bad of advice.

He's saved my ass multiple times and goes out of his way to get the best deal for me and the rest of my family. I trust him.

I would see no reason to not cut it thoroughly, so I'm going to assume it was an animal bite.

But you should report it, maybe other folks in the neighborhood had the same done to them.

This and the hit and run on my car have me thinking if there exists a monitoring system that you can keep in your car. Something hanging inside from the roof that can monitor and record what is happening outside the windows...

The brake lines are under high pressure when you step on the brake, I can't see any way someone bored enough to do a thing could be precise enough to nick the line just enough that it only has a tiny leak and you don't just immediately lose all fluid and pressure to that half of the brake system.
And if it was a nick that small debris on the road thrown up from tires and falling out of other vehicles can cause this type of thing although rare.
I really don't think someone purposely cut that.

Are you certain you haven't had any visions where he splits into 2 splitting images of himself and he stabs you in your chest?

Ok, we can rule out your mechanic right now. Have you made any contact with close people when you saw it? If not, contact them. But like some of us have said, report it to the police as soon as possible (which I'm sure you have or are doing right now).
