The Nintendo 64 was originally released 20 years ago today

I was in grade 8 when it launched and got mine the same week. Ill never forget playing Mario64 until 4am and skipping school the next day and my parents didnt even question why I didn't go to school.

Most amazing and confusing day of my life.

Nothing in gaming will ever compare to the jump mario made to 3d for me. Being so young but still having had so much experience with 2d games, i remember just being in shock when it booted up, you could have told me the whole game was marios face at the beginning screen and i would have been fine with that. It really was a time where anything and everything felt possible for gaming.

I got a free Super Mario 64 with my MyNintendo points yesterday. It's the first time in quite some time I played the game.

A. It actually looks better than I remember it looking. I think that's because it relied on very simple geometry and a very stylized world. It looks really good shrunk down on the Wii U gamepad, too. I only noticed a bit of aliasing, and usually aliasing in old games is ridiculously blatant.

B. I remember now why I had such mixed, ambivalent feelings about it 20 years ago. I loved and still love 2D platformers. Even in the late 1990s I felt Mario 64 was imprecise and I hated the camera. Yesterday and today I found myself constantly fucking up seemingly easy moves. Maybe I just suck at this, but give me a 2D sidescroller over a 3D game any day. I hate how much shit the New Super Mario Bros series gets here. I never played NSMB2, but I played the three other games and all three of them are vastly more enjoyable than Mario 64 or Mario Galaxy. I'd be more than happy if Nintendo just kept churning those out every few years until the end of time, but every time they come up everyone is like "Not another 2D Mario!"

C. I will say I like how short the game is. In two several hour play sessions I beat the game with 71 stars, don't intend to go back and finish it. I saw Yoshi on that roof many years ago, I don't need to do that again.

It was actually a pretty fun time and the game actually does hold up better than I thought it would, but I still can't help resenting that game for killing my beloved 2D platformers for two entire generations.

The japanese box art was the best, I still have that version.

So many great titles, Blast Corpse is among my alltime favourites.

Want to feel even more old, guys? I was a fetus when this system was released here in the US. ._.

Nevertheless, I love it. It's my second console ever (first was the SNES) and it holds many special memories for me. I still play on it from time to time.

Man, the picture of the N64's box brings back so many memories.

I miss those days. So much simpler. I can dream that someday I'll be able to afford a complete N64 collection.

I remember renting the console and a couple games from Blockbuster back during the winter break of '96. The Weather Gods smiled down on me because there was light freezing, and schools were shut down for an extra couple days (lol Texas) so I spent all day and night playing SM64. Man, what a ride.

Wow these screens/promotional images are bringing back serious nostalgia. There was something magical about the N64 at the time. No console launch has ever captured the sense of amazement I felt when I played Super Mario 64 or Wave Race for the first time since.

I was in LA last week for E3 and stopped to get some Bubble Tea at a small Boba place. Inside they had a beat up Pikachu N64 and some kids were playing Super Smash Bros. on it. The N64 is like the energizer bunny. It keeps going and going even 20 years later.

This console had so many unique experiences

Current console can't replicate the feelings I had when I played Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 or Lylat Wars

I love Nintendo 64. For me it's the most beautiful console ever. It reminds me of my childhood, it was a special feeling when I went with my cousins to a local dealer to rent the console. Later I was a proud owner and really enjoyed in games like Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 and Pokemon Stadium.

So good. We got the Japanese N64 a week early to Club Nintendo, complete with Super Mario 64. Pilotwings came a bit later. I remember plugging it in for the first time, and running free around the castle, it was completely unlike anything else I had done before.

everything combined from the last 25 years in one text.

every fad is listed here :)

My favourite ever console.

Home to my favourite game of all time and even the best wrestling game of all time!

I was in high school and we used to have immense 4 player battles on Goldeneye, Smash, Wrestlemania, No Mercy, Mario Kart, Perfect Dark etc.

I've never been more excited for a Christmas gift in my entire life. The wait was unbearable and 12/13 year old me would have dreams about owning the console beforehand, only to wake up disappointed!

Still my favourite console of all time, the second I saw footage of the Hoth battle in Shadows of the Empire I knew I had to have it. Had to wait until Christmas 97 to get my hands on it, but it was worth it.

The next few weeks and months were spent playing Goldeneye, Mario 64, Starfox, Mario Kart 64, Blast Corps and mostly ISS 64. Later than year Banjo came along and then finally Ocarina of Time. Best gaming period of my life.

Edit: I completely forgot how popular it was in Canada, here in Ireland I was literally the only person I knew that owned one. I think I read somewhere before that Ireland's population had a higher percentage of Playstation owners than even Japan back then

I only ever owned about six? games for it, but I loved it. Spent my afternoons playing Mario 64, and Wayne Gretzky 3d Hockey. Other games I either rented, or lusted over.

Between the analogue stick and software innovations like movable camera, I'd say the N64 is the single most influential console towards the three dimensional games we play today. Sure, others have contributed as well, but not as much as the N64.

It also popularised controller vibration, people bitch about that controller a lot but it was really innovative

The SNES was better. The 64 felt like rehash for technology sake without significant benefits to me.

Mario 64 was a rehash for technologies sake?

Seeing Mario 64 playing on the local toy store demo station was a magical moment. It wasn't long before that same demo station had a broken joystick.

Nintendo 64 is alongside Sega Mega Drive the two consoles I never actually owned (I already owned a PlayStation since near EU launch) but still played many games on thanks to friend/family visits and occasionally lending the system.

My favorites:

1. Mario 64
2. Zelda OOT
3. Goldeneye
4. Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire

Mario 64 is probably the best example of utilizing a hardware to the max (and understanding 3D graphics) at the earliest possible date. This game was an incredible achievement. Potentially Nintendo's biggest single game achievement ever.

With that said: Most games on the hardware was blurry as hell with an awful, awful framerate. The Nintendo 64 was the first console to offer a Z-buffer but overall the hardware was premature with a bad RAM design which screwed must game projects. The Nintendo 64 had a handful of *amazing* exclusives but let's not get too nostalgic as it probably had one of the worst good-games/bad-games ratios in console history. Sticking to cartridges was also a terrible mistake.

The first video game console I bought myself. It'll forever have a special place on my heart. So much time spent playing Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing and Smash Bros.

I have far more love for the SNES, PS1, and GCN but...

Banjo Kazooie, No Mercy, Dr. Mario 64, Ogre Battle 64, and Mischief Makers are still my jam.

My favorite system, there's no fucking doubt about it. The one I got first was stolen with some games and then got a transparent pink-ish one that I still keep to this day.

Such a good console, not my favourite Nintendo one though as I'd give that honour to the SNES.But it has my favourite game of all time on it,Mario 64.

Probably my favourite console ever, or at least the one with the fondest memories.

I remember having the worst night sleep ever the night before my birthday, I knew I was getting OOT in the morning and the wait was agony, pretty much like how christmas eve was when I was a kid. Played the shit out of that game for months on end...and I still buy it when it gets re released now.

The games were just sheer fun; Beetle Adventure Racing, Diddy Kong, SM64, Goldeneye...Mario Party with its palm destroying analogue spinning.

Loved it

The first console I ever got, back in '99 when I was six years old with Star Wars: Episode One Racer and Super Mario 64. The N64 will always be my favorite console and hold such a special place in my heart. Endless hours of Mario Kart, Mario Party, Smash and Goldeneye with friends. Great single player experiences like OOT, Majora's Mask and SM64. Despite it's relatively small library, this console has so many unforgettable jems. I just started my yearly play through of Super Mario 64 tonight and it couldn't have come at a better time. Happy anniversary, my love.
