Never heard of Spectral before, I can't imagine the budget was that big anyway, there are no names attached to that movie.

Given that it's wholly financed by Legendary I would hazard a guess that it cost at least $75-100m.

And that would be before any reshoots.

They aren't known for being thrifty when it comes to their stuff.

Well, they are about to have a pretty bad year then, between this and Warcraft. Hopefully, the Kaiju stuff will work out for them in the long run, I like what they have done with that so far. I looked them up and apparently they are not associated with any of the Warner/DC stuff anymore, any reason for that?

Presales are pointing to $200-300M for Warcraft in China. Possibly higher if the film has a Jurassic World type run. For comparison, X-Men Apocalypse opens 5 days before Warcraft in China, and currently has about a 10th of the midnight opening presales that Warcraft has. DOFP made over $110M in China.

Time to scratch Warcraft from this competition, regardless of how it does outside of China (though the rest of Asia minus Japan will probably follow suit).

Now that Gods of Egypt is ancient history my bet goes to Tarzan. I saw the trailer for that this weekend and couldn't believe it. Looked very bad to me.

By all accounts Tarzan is a disaster that Warners can't really do anything about. It's possible that it could still do big business in China though. Tarzan is the sort of thing that usually plays pretty well with Chinese audiences.

Woah. I wonder if the Wanda buy out (and investment by Tencent IIRC) means that Warcraft is classed as a Chinese release rather than an 'import'? If it is that could make all the difference.

Could Warcraft be the first franchise that gets sequels based entirely off its (stellar?) box office performance in China?

This is reason that studios like Warners have put so many big fantasy projects into development recently, they know that China likes fantasy films and they are all on the hunt for the next big franchise that really works in China.

Yeah, about that World of Warcraft movie.... courtesy of the first reviews thread.

Imagine “Battlefield Earth” without the verve and you get this sludgy, tedious fantasy adventure, a fun-starved dud that’s not even unintentionally hilarious (The Wrap)

The epic battle at the center of “Warcraft” isn’t the clash between humans and orcs. That’s just what takes up roughly two hours of screen time. The true conflict comes from filmmakers trying to tell a story with soul and struggling against the inherent ridiculousness of the commodity they’re working with. (Variety)

I still say this is World of Warcraft: The Spirits Within. Anyone who had odds on WoW isn't out of the running yet. Maybe China numbers can save it, but maybe not.

I think World of Warcraft has a pretty good chance of breaking even. I just hope it doesn't torpedo Duncan Jones' career.

Also, I saw a trailer for Gods of Egypt here in the UK - apparently it hasn't even released here yet! Maybe the UK Box Office can save it.

Is Alice a bomb or just a disappointment compared to the first? It seems they cut the budget by 15%, which is impressive for a sequel.

It certainly doesn't seem to have the buzz its predecessor had, and I think a lot of people are tired of Johnny Depp's 'put on a hat and act silly' shtick.

EDIT - from Wikipedia:

It made $1.5 million from Thursday previews (to the first film's $3.9 million)[33] and just $9.7 million on its first day, compared to the $41 million opening Friday of its predecessor. Through its opening weekend, it earned $27 million, which when compared to its predecessor's $116 million opening is down 70%.

Holy shit.

I can't call Gods Egypt substantially worse than your average adventure movies. Don't know where the hate comes from, I mean, it was a cartoon, but that seems to be in the vogue (being "fun").

People disliked it because of there being too many white people/white washing Egypt.

It wasn't real egypt. It's like whitewashing krypton. I mean, yeah they could have used black people as a way to respect the people who created the myth, but it's Hollywood, that has never ever happened.

I think Tarzan movie could do well today, if they wouldn';t constantly remake the same damn origin story over and over again. THere's so much pulpy goodness in this character.

The real pulpy Tarzan has never been shown in films. Budget constraints meant that all Tarzan movies minimized the fantasy/SF elements that were in the books. I want Tarzan to go to Pal-ul-don and fight a T-rex, or meet the ant-men, or find a remnant of the Roman empire in the middle of Africa, or travel to the earth's core, or discover the lost city of Opar, etc etc.

Essentially people got sick of hollywoods shit finally, and no it's not like whitewashing kryton, the movie might feature fictional gods but it takes place in a real place with real people who lived there at the time and those people are disenfranchised by hollywood constantly.

I was turned off by the overuse of cheap CGI.The trailer made it look like like a bad computer game.Whitewashing was only one reason why it looked silly. (I also believe that even if the movie had numerous Egyptian actors playing roles, it would still have been accused of whitewashing because so many black Americans believe that the old Egyptians were black Nubians).

Apparently Universal have removed Spectral from their website and even Legendary's own website doesn't mention it all despite the film still being on theatrical distributors schedules.

It would appear that Spectral (described as a cross between Ghostbuster and Black Hawk Down ?!?!?!?!?) is either being quietly squeezed into theatres in the second week of August without so much as a poster released as of yet or it's being renamed and put out straight to video thus robbing us of a number one contender for flop of the year.

After Legendary got bought out by the Chinese I'd have though that they wouldn't care about having a super flop like Blackhat (that went straight to video in a lot of territories) one year and Spectral the next. Evidently they are.

Tarzan lol. Definitely Tarzan.

Word is Warners going to heavily market this to women which..., could be interesting. I think it has 'under performer' written all over it but outright bomb? I'm not seeing it myself.

I'm still thinking it's gonna be Tarzan...Warcraft is gonna make insane money overseas.

Gerard Butler was comedy gold in Gods of Egypt though.

He went full fuck it and used his native accent....in Egypt. I don't blame people for hating the movie, but I think it's kind of charming in it's own way.

All the women in my workplace want to see it just for Skarsgard's abs. It seems to have a very Magic Mike type of curiosity.

Not that I disagree with you but have you seen the movie? it's not "our" Egypt, it's Egypt where the earth is flat, there are no real places and all there is is the Nile Valley. Essentially, what the very, very ancient Egyptians thought Egypt was.

Warcraft just beat Furious 7's all-time midnight record with 55.4 (yuan).

Scratch this one off the list.

The midnight actuals fell a bit behind Furious 7, but Warcraft still earned $46M in its Chinese opening. $250M is looking probable in China. Rest of the world is already at $75M, even if the domestic release was cancelled, and it was pulled from theatres everywhere other than China, Warcraft would be safe from earning the title of Biggest Bomb.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

Legendary Pictures and Universal have pulled Spectral from the August release calendar.

The movie, described as a supernatural Black Hawk Down, had been set to open Aug. 12. No new date has been announced.

This has straight to video written alllll over it. Legendary self financed it so I doubt Universal will care what happens to it.

Spectral has been completed for more than a year. The sci-fi thriller was one of the projects already underway at Legendary when the financing and production company left Warner Bros. and struck a new deal with Universal that commenced in 2014. Universal is only a distributor on the film.

Directed by commercials helmer Nic Mathieu, Spectral stars James Badge Dale, Max Martini, Emily Mortimer and Bruce Greenwood and revolves around a special ops team who battle supernatural entities taking over a European city.

Interesting fact, Nic Mathieu was Warner Bros choice to direct Robotech when it was set up there.

Expect to this be quietly put out straight to video/disc early in 2017. After all Legendary can't be putting out Black Hat (which went straight to VOD in some territories) and Spectral out straight to video in the same year.

Well, it looks like we won't have Spectral to kick around anymore. Good night, sweet prince.

In other news...., Tarzan will get a China release per a site called China Film Insider.

Warner Bros. The Legend of Tarzan (泰山归来:险战丛林), a new version of the ape-man saga, will open in China on July 19, over two weeks after its U.S. opening, the studio announced on one of its Chinese social media accounts on Monday.

The film will screen in 3D, IMAX 3D, and China Film Giant Screen formats.

http://chinafilminsider.com/tarzan-gets-july-china-release-date/

Based on absolutely nothing I think that this could do quite well with Chinese audiences. I think this is the old school type of yarn that they like and I imagine that Tarzan is a character with some recognition with the Chinese.

Looks like Alice Through The Looking Glass has been a bomb - according to Wikipedia as of June 21st it had earned only $239.2 million against a budget of $170 million. Honestly, I'm kind of glad to see this flop as I found the first film had a visual style and type of overacting which made me feel ill.

Good. That's what they get for not making Tron 3

I must admit though that probably a good 50% of my affection for Tron Legacy comes from the amazing soundtrack. Same deal with Oblivion. Love Kosinski's films and I want to know what he's doing next.

Can we add Ghost in the Shell preemptively to the Box Office Bomb 2017 thread? It's never going to outrun the accusations of whitewashing, no matter how many Japanese people are added to the roster of the film, and being released so close to Fast and the Furious 8 is only going to seal its fate.

They need to somehow fool people into thinking it's a Black Widow film

It's actually a very competent script marred by over-indulgence. The entire Final Fight sequence is so fucking out of place and hyper-macho.

Or it was just a terrible movie.
