Could there ever be a Zelda MMO?

I actually think an MMO lite would work rather well for Zelda. There are plenty of different races in the universe already and it would be an interesting concept to let you build characters from them. In theory an MMO can work well for plenty of big franchises, but it's a hard model for most companies to sustain without being overly greedy and profitable at the same time

Oh god no they would never make a Zelda MMO nor would I want it. In all Zelda games, you are Link. I could never imagine them making a Zelda MMO with character variability because you are always Link and it is his adventure. Pokemon MMO makes much more sense because there are different characters with each game (male or female) and they definitely have the lore down for that world too. Pokemon MMO would be wildly successful.

Calling it a "Hyrule MMO" probably will help people considering the idea as a possibility.

Back at their time Four Swords introduced multiplayer and TriForce Heroes had more of an avatar than Link. So who knows. In 10 years (aka 2 or 3 main entries), it may be possible.

However I think atm, it's much more likely for Nintendo to look at Monolith and the Xenoblade IP for a MMO project.

Zelda, no. How would dungeons and puzzles work with large groups of people? I'd hazard that they wouldn't and it'd have to be just standard ARPG MMO fare which isn't Zelda. Although, maybe play as a Moblin?

Pokemon would work the best, but it'd mostly be just integrating the online features into standard play and be ever expanding as opposed to starting over every generation. Could do some team battle trials too.

Edit: guess it could be Four Swords or Triforce Heroes fare.

It's 2016 and Nintendo can't even figure out how to do online right, and you think they could make an MMO?

Here's an unpopular opinion: The NX will be Nintendo's last console. Five years or so from now, they'll do handhelds as long as they're profitable and third party games for both Sony and Microsoft. Since they'll be broke at this point, the first order of business will be to port Mario and Zelda games to those platforms first, then use the funding to make a proper Zelda/Mario, which, since they'll need it to hit, won't take any major risks, like being an MMO.

No. Nintendo is just finally adding things like physics and voiceovers. I think that's a little too out of the Zelda box for Zelda.

Also, I'm not sure if a Zelda MMO would even strengthen that IP. It seems like it'd mostly open risk to hurt it, instead. Zelda gameplay wouldn't benefit from a MMO world, compared to just singe player or a closed co-op game.

If they were to have tried this, the chance for it to be big probably passed over a decade ago.
Mobile F2P Zelda would be a better idea than this, sadly.

The upfront cost is too much for Nintendo, then add it's a declining genre and that genere's set up is the antethesis of how Nintendo makes a game. This will never happen.

No that doesn't make any kind of sense seeing that Zelda is a singular encapsulated sorry within each game. The characters are set and carry the interest mainly. Surely Pokemon would be the way to go.

A spin-off of course. Co-devolved with Square Enix and/or Monolithsoft.

Hylian, Zora, Goron, Gerudo, Shiekah as playable races..

Very Xenoblade Chronicles X-esque.

It could definitely work.

It seems like it would be pretty easy to expand 4 Swords/Tri-Force Heroes into a dungeon-crawl style MMO like PSO/Diablo, with massive common areas and instanced dungeons.

My very first post on NeoGAF, just short of ten years ago:

Zelda would work pretty well as an MMORPG if it were set somewhere around the era of OoT. You have all those different races to choose from; Goron, Zora, Hylian etc, even Minish. It could be set before or after OoT, so there's no central "Hero"... or better yet, set it during the 7 years of war while Link is sleeping. As time goes by, they could release expansions and introduce "outlands" like Termina, Labrynna or Koholint Island.

...And I still think it's true. Have it be during the seven year gap. Then NOBODY is Link, and it fills in the story some. And you can see the world getting worse and worse under Ganon's rule. You can be a soldier for the Kingdom of Zora, the Goron Tribe, or maybe the Hyrule Resistance. Or maybe you can be a Gerudo, or maybe even a Kokiri! Kind of stylize the world to make the overworld and distance between kingdoms WAY bigger, like they did for TP, but make it even bigger.

Kakariko Village is coming along, but you can't get there until you're a little higher level, kind of how Jeuno was in FFXI. Maybe in some later expansion, you travel to the clouds and find the Ruins of Skyloft?

You gotta admit, you want to play this.

If you want a game that steals the look and aesthetic of Zelda in an MMO, there's Graal.

If you want Zelda the IP as an MMO, that makes no sense.

I'd want to leave the Zoras, Gorons, etc. out for a bit. I'd rather have players be Knights of Hyrule. It's depressing to see how useless they are in most games.
