NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Got an AV Famicom and a broken FDS (mainly for the RAM pack for FDSStick) ordered too. Went in on an insane import order with a bunch of friends but went with the cheap shipping option so it's still going to be a long while before it all shows up. At least it puts some distance between that expense and the additional ~$100 CAD for the RGB board.

I was going to mod my OG NES that I put a blinking light win in but the standard Nintendo multi-out was a big selling point for me.

I hear ya. I'll be putting the AV Famicom right beside my SNES, and be able to swap the SCART cable very easily.

I've also looked at an FDS stick too. Is it worth it if I already have an Everdrive?

I am likely miss-remembering this but I recall reading that an Everdrive, at least on an NES, doesn't replicate the disk-system audio as correctly as an FDSStick with a Famicom.

That's correct. You can fake an FDS drive with the Stick and RAM adaptor, but you still need a real Famicom.

Please, please post impressions of FDS Stick if anyone gets one. I'm very interested in how well it works and how closely it resembles the real thing. I love the idea of collecting discs and using that lovely physical disc drive but mine is somewhat finicky.

I put in a BLW and had to remove it since it was like a death grip on my cartridge. Like, I had to remove the games with pliers...

I just recently got my BLW I preordered months ago and (even though they delayed it to fix said death grip according to thier updates) mine still takes a lot of force to pull it out. It plays the games fine however. I'm just worried it might break my carts after repeat use.

I did have one I had to remove with pliers. The BLW does have a crazy grip.

It is a shame. I did the exchange program thing to get the newer one and it still has a pretty tight grip. I'm able to get carts out without taking off the top of my system now though so it is better.

Very cool, I wasn't even aware of FDSStick. I really like disk emulators, both floppy and cd -- they seem like such a great way of preserving old mediums.

NES doesn't have the expansion audio pin hooked up. You can hook it up yourself.

On a Famicom you'll end up with some pitch differences on an Everdrive. It's because the chip for generating the sound was recreated in an FPGA so it's a bit like clone hardware -- close but it'll never quite be perfect. Still I think I'm OK with that to avoid the manual disk flipping.

That's not what he was saying - he was saying the Everdrive's FDS sound chip emulation was shot.

Just take a listen to Zelda (Everdrive first, FDSStick-or-similar on actual FDS second; the other two are just the stock 2A02 music/sounds the NA/PAL versions got, so never mind them). Not even that old a video, either, only put up three months ago.

Yeah that's exactly what I said, the pitch is off. I didn't realize it was as bad as that though.

There were some people on the Everdrive forum uploading custom FPGA cores for the sunsoft 5b audio expansion chip (among others), so if Krikzz never gets around to fixing this it'd be nice if someone created a more accurate FPGA implementation.

Hopefully this thing is successful and helps drive down the cost on those carts.

Dude... you know that nothing will drive down the cost of carts anymore. It's not like the games aren't otherwise available in non-cart form.

People who are collecting carts are a different demographic.

Hoping for a Famicom one in Japan. If anything just for a Fami classic controller!

That's the first thing I thought of. As soon as I saw this I jumped to try and see if there was a Fami version.

They should hard wire the controllers in too just as a dumb throwback.

Honestly curious about how the controllers plug in and if this will somehow be hacked to allow people to put their own roms/games on it.

So will you all be biting on this? Feeling like I will. It'll be nice to have this under my HDTV in the living room since my real collection with with the CRT in my basement and is not all that visitor-friendly.

And I'm legit shocked at the great selection of games. They did a pretty nice job, there. Only missing Contra as far as stone cold classics, IMO. Some good touches like picking Double Dragon 2 instead of the first game for actual 2P action.

I think this thing is going to be pretty damn popular for Christmas. I will likely buy one for a few friends...

One can wish.

I'm undecided, but those controllers... do they hook up via Wii connection ports?
Yes, these controllers will also work as classic controllers for NES and Game Boy VC games.

Calm down man, I'm at work and don't have time to read a full press release. It's easier to ask and check back for an answer later. I appreciate you guys letting me know.
Misread me, I wasn't having a go, I just meant 'yep and confirmed from the horse's mouth' rather than it just being conjecture.

So with voting being kind of slow the last couple months, I'm gonna take July off from our traditional picking similar to how we did with Xmas, but I am going to ask you guys to help. Suggest some summer themed or summery games and we'll try to just pick one in here. If we actually get a ton of them, I will be forced to set up a poll haha but I'm hoping we can just kind of pick one for August.

Me getting one would depend on what it is hardware wise and the AV quality since VC put me off to their official offerings in the first place.

I might get one just to check it out, but will probably continue to mostly play on the original hardware.

It looks pretty cool but I personally have no use for it. Price is good though, and it's a nice easy way for people to check out these games when they might not have bothered otherwise.

Adventure Island. Boom, done.

It better be nice quality parts with better than Wii U VC emulation. The price is on the steep side for only one controller and 30 games.

Why can't they release something to play all those old cartridges? This feels like such a downgrade versus a Wii / Wii U and Virtual Console being static at 30 games. I hope it's hackable to add more games someway, somehow.

Its a downgrade because its $60. Its not for us. The retron can play your carts.

Anyways, a friend is asking me to give him an offer on Bubble Bobble, SMB2, Gremlins 2, Flintstones and Turtles 1. All ntsc. What would be a decent price to give? Dont want to be either ripped off or rip him off.

On that note, do we have any real objections to just doing Adventure Island in August?

Not really, but i probably wont join since i only own Wonder Boy on the Master System, which is basically the same game, so wont get the Nes-version for it i think.

It's weird how the classic mini has Super C but is missing Contra, just like the Virtual console. Even the MSX version of Contra is on the Japanese VC. And the NES game was unlockable in Contra 4.

There must be some specific rights issue about that specific version on home consoles.
