bish gets all the credit :)
Also quick question: Several people here have been saying that Yoshi's Island probably couldn't happen on a SNES version. Is this based on it not being in the Wii U VC (Which I'm not even sure is the case, just think I read it somewhere here), it handles emulation poorly, or is there some sort of legal issue with it?

It uses the Super FX2 chip, which they'd have to license out. We know how cheap they are with licensing.

The NES Classic Controller is what makes me interested. I was hoping beyond hope that Nintendo would actually release themed classic controllers back in the day, but other than the Club Nintendo SuFami controller, nope.

I want this so fucking bad! I'm buying this day one. Easily.

You could make a RetroPie for less (or around the same amount) and have every NES and SNES game in existence, but the classic NES look and feel is totally worth it. I'm so excited for this.

What if they did a Game Boy Classic?

Rare made but still a Nintendo property that they are free to sell on their own.

Nintendo owns DK64. They have it up on the Wii U eshop and all.

Rare developed it, but Nintendo owns the IP, so they're able to rerelease it unlike Banjo or Perfect Zero.

Aw, perfect! He just mentioned Rare and I figured I'd snap at the opportunity to get Mystical Ninja on there! But, they'd be remiss to not put their own character on there!

I'll repeat what I tweeted earlier: disappointed some news outlets have skewed the details by leading with: "Nintendo to Launch New Console in November" or words similar. I know why they're doing it, but as someone who does news too, I'd at the very least put NES/Nintendo Classic in the heading.

I wouldn't even put it past some sites having 'NX' in the SEO or keywords section.

Yeah, that's really rotten. Anything for those views!

I absolutely agree with everyone who says the target demographic is the casual gamer. You wouldn't believe (or maybe you would) the number of Wiis and even Wii Us I sold people by telling them it had an online store where you could buy old Nintendo games. This being a cheap, standalone product with 30 games right out of the box makes it a very appealing product and I'm sure it will sell gangbusters around the holidays.

Also, I'm totally in. This thing looks cool and is so cheap that I pretty much have to buy it. Very impressed by the library of games as well.

Honestly I should be buying just the controllers... But dammit where the hell is the preorder page on amazon already?!?!?

It'll be really interesting to see what hardware this thing is actually running under the hood. Thinking about it, I actually have doubts they'd be using Wii hardware. It really doesn't make the most sense.
  • Whilst the Wii has a fairly low overall power consumption to begin with (~13W), even when you strip out the dvd drive and wireless it would still likely be too high to comfortably run off a typical USB phone chargers (1.1A / 5.5W). I guess Nintendo could limit the thing to tablet chargers (2.1A / 11.0W) but I feel that route would things messier than they need to be.
  • At this price range and form factor, you'd really want to go with an SoC to reduce cost, manufacturing complexity, power comsumption and the overall size of the motherboard. The Wii's chipset is not an SoC.
  • the Wii chipset also needs active cooling, which is again something that adds to cost, power consumption and size and is something that's probably best avoided.
  • The Wii's Hollywood GPU is architecturally limited to a framebuffer of 640x448, so in order to output 1080p to HDMI it would need a separate upscaler and that would add to the cost.
So considering all that, the Wii chipset doesn't strike me as the best thing to use in this device, unless Nintendo does something drastic, like a node shrink or something (which they won't because that would be a colossal waste of money). Maybe they'll use the 3DS's SoC (the original dual core one) or perhaps some off-the-shelf commodity SoC. If they really feel they need to reuse the Wii's chip, maybe pairing Broadway with a more smaller and more modern GPU/video controller might be smarter, though that would require some extra engineering. Of course I could be completely off base and Nintendo did figure out a way to make the Wii hardware work in this price range and form factor.

Anyway that's enough speculating for now. Curious to see the eventual teardown.

I hope that the emulation is better then the atgames megadrive/genesis stuff which had really poor sound quality and some games had issues.

Loving this. When I first saw the price (basically one PS4/X1 game) I thought the console would have separate game, but they're including 30 decent games with it and that really amazed me.

$80 for the retro system. $800 for your favourite 5 games on cart!

Lol, if such a collection contained some of the higher priced heavy hitters like Earthbound and Demon's Crest, that won't be an issue. Having a new SNES with native HDMI support would be the main selling point for me personally. Don't want an older, clunky CRT around, nor do I feel like going the hardware-modding routes I've seen and read about. An HDMI enabled SNES would do gangbusters IMO, especially with cart support.

What if NX is just called New NES, similar to their New Mario games. I think it actually works well. Release this, get a buzz going, then drop the New NES with whatever New features they'll be promoting.

As for the OP, I actually am interested in it. It would be perfect as an additional console in my basement, and there are a few games I never got around to playing on there. I'm definitely keeping an eye on this.

Just for fun, I used pricecharting.com to tally up the total average it would cost you today to buy all of the original NES carts of all of the games included in this package, including an original NES system.

Not a bad deal. Or, if you just buy them all on the Wii/Wii U Virtual Console, it would cost you a total of $150 obviously. =)

Should have been Tecmo Super Bowl, the hell they are thinking.

Also no Heavy Barrel, or Legacy of the Wizard? (My very first 2 games on NES)

This is an even worse idea than the Wii U name.

"This Christmas, the New NES will allow you to play all the newest Nintendo games..."

"Eh, I already bought the new NES last year."

I really hope it plays carts and Nintendo starts selling carts in stores again. I know that's unlikely but I want to believe.

So this is awesome and while I shouldn't buy it (I have every game on here via Virtual Console) I'm probably still getting it. Hell the NES style classic controller and styling is worth it alone.

I wish I could use NES carts on it though. I know why not (size and cost prohibitive) but man...my NES is dead (not just the cart slot) and my NES library is still pretty big.

Another way Nintendo bundles up nostalgia and sells it back to you. Yes, Nintendo you're so "brilliant".

Brilliant for capitalizing on the retro game demand while introducing a cheap entry point for newcomers to Nintendo's back-catalog? Bear in mind that you've got very popular indie games out that employ those old 8bit/16bit aesthetics, so there's an opportunity to tap into that market as well.

I'd say brilliant is pretty apt.

What kind of port is this? (why not USB?!)
Is this using emulation?
Can more games be added? So many questions.

People have been asking for VC boxes for years, and now they're getting one. Why wouldn't you cater to a clear want?

Because people are excited and interested in this and they're not allowed to be!

Incredible work!

It's a deal either way!

I like the classic red and white logo on the US packaging.

I don't need this in the slightest...but dammit, I'm probably gonna end up pre-ordering.
