So What's With The Hate for Infinite Warfare? [Serious]

I love first person shooters. I have played Dreamkiller. Hoped that Legendary would be good (it wasn't). Think Darkest of Days has its merits. Suffered my way through Killzone 2. I'll play any and every shooter there is, even when it's bad.

But... like... Infinite Warfare does not look or sound bad to me at all. In fact, it sounds exciting as hell.

Just a couple years ago, everyone was complaining about modern military shooters. Heck, they still are! Look at all the "oh man, I wish we'd go back to WWII shooters again" remarks. The best shooters of the past few years were WOLFENSTEIN and DOOM respectively. WWII and Sci-Fi.

So, like, Call of Duty, which comes out yearly, was in danger of becoming stale when it was nothing but modern military stuff.

Now we have this game that's got SPACE DOGFIGHTS (I've seen them compared to ACE COMBAT, HOLY SHIT!), has a space carrier that you command? Apparently all this stuff is seamless loading as well. Weapons include stuff like those amazing tracking grenades from Advanced Warfare and--I think?--gravity lift grenades? Like, that footage I saw at E3 blew my mind, and I'm probably the most jaded FPS player there is. I'll PLAY anything, but I'm never wowed as a result.

All the folks calling Call of Duty stale should be losing their shit at this, surely? Because, like, hey, it's doing so much new stuff; the free dogfighting alone looks amazing.

I get being mad that MWRemaster is attached at the hip, but it seems so much ire is directed at Infinite Warfare specifically, and I just don't understand what the problem is. It sounds like a really cool game, and a breath of fresh air for the Call of Duty series.

A yearly series that isn't stagnant? AWESOME... or... at least, so I thought.

Do people just wanna hate Call of Duty because it's the FPS on top? Or are there actual legitimate criticisms of the game itself out there?

It's cod so it's cool to hate it. Plus some of the community is tired of the future crap, so a lot of trolls decided to hop on the bandwagon and shit on it.

Looki at the Sony e3 press conference for example, a ton of people thought it looked cooled and then when they found out it was Infinite Warfare they began to trash it.

I'm just tired of the future setting. Nothing about what I've seen of Infinite Warfare seems interesting, you could interchange it with the last two CODs and I couldn't tell the difference.

And the reveal trailer was pretty lousy.

I'm kind of happy on how this is turning out.

As a huge COD fan, we're getting "2 for 1" this year, so that's great to me. Looking forward to the MP reveals.

Probably because its COD, its cool to hate it even when they've never played it. But its probably half the fact that MWR is included with it.

It was funny seeing all the people fooled when they showed the last gameplay trailer and they didn't realize it was COD :p

Bad first trailer, poorly cut, music was used in poor taste, it was immediately compared to Battlefield 1's reveal the week later, pre-order exclusive remaster. That narrative has kind of stuck, although I did really like its E3 showing.

If you take the vocal contingent at their word, it's that Call of Duty has evolved into something that does not represent the soul of the series. That Infinite Warfare suddenly sprouted millions of dislikes instead of, say, Advanced Warfare, ostensibly because of this makes me not take them at their word, though. Or at least, it's more complicated than that.

I've never played a Call of Duty so this is more an outsider's passing glance at this.

The campaign gameplay actually looked pretty good, but I am just so over CoD MP, and I rarely buy fps just for the campaign.

The gameplay demo at the sony presser was actually pretty neat and a good demo for a CoD in a long time I thought.

Not buying it though, maybe for a bugdet price.

I don't understand it either. I see people say they want CoD to go back to WWII all the time, even after years of WWII.

I guess the future setting just bored people too quickly and they want to go back to what they were comfortable with.

People think future is too staturated and want to go back to the days of WW2 style was over saturated so people are loving Battlefield 1 and it's WW1 because it's kinda like WW2 anyway.

It looks boring as fuck. Near-future is super saturated.

But at least you'll be able to play as a woman in multiplayer.

It's not near future, it has intersystem space travel, and as for near-future FPS, we have... four near-future FPS.

There are four near-future FPS in existence that I know of.

Where can one view the space fights for infinite warfare?

We don't have proper footage beyond the PS4 showcase. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmaZw1xMxBQ

I hate Call of Duty because Activision has taken multiple studios that used to make games I like, and now those studios work exclusively to support Call of Duty.

I'm actually coming around to Infinite Warfare, after it's surprisingly strong showing at Sony's E3 show.

I think it's just series fatigue for most people though. I know you can point to there being dog fights in space, and other additions to mix it up, but i'm convinced the core experience will remain hugely the same, and at this point, we're on our 14th entry in the series in nearly as many years.

Mob mentality honestly. People see dislikes on the trailer so they dislike it. Quite ridiculous if you ask me. They seem to be one of the only yearly franchises that innovates.

See, here's your problem. You have just a bad taste in games.

I have no opinion on Infinite Warfare, it looks alright to me

Looks terrible i mean i watched the single player stuff and the whole stuff with that rope thing? it removes everything and slows everything down on what CoD made it fast. Now all of a sudden going to deep future space. Yeah you can say stuff like advanced warfare and even black ops 2 and 3 went further into the future but for one i liked Blops 2 and 3 because the multiplayer are still boots on ground.

Infinite Warfare just looks and feels dull and this is coming from someone who bought all CoD every year. Ghosts was one of the worst CoD i ever played next to MW3 to be exact, and seeing this just makes it more boring i ever thought it would be.

Yeah sure you have MW1 Remastered with it but i don't know if i am going to pay 80 euros just for that and looking at all the Battlefield 1 gameplay it looks fresh and just what i need.

It's cool to hate on popular things. I was totally floored by the CoD trailer at the Sony presser this year, looked incredible.

When I saw that space battle video in E3 I had no idea it was CoD and was actually excited for it. I still might get it if it gets good reviews. Don't care about the MP.

From the people I've spoken to, there's definite hate-on for future/fantasy settings. Blame it on people getting into fps from COD4.

Anything within 200 years with not dissimilar technology is near-future. They still have guns that fire bullets.
Please lead me to the super saturated space dogfight games please.

Seriously, I want to play them. Point them out and I'll go buy them right now.
And that immediately goes to a standard COD shooting sequence. I don't believe that the space combat is going to be a significant thing. Treyarch made a big deal of the jet combat in BO2 and it amounted to nothing.

I was initially against the space setting, but after being placated with Call of Duty 4 Remastered, I'm a lot more open to it. The E3 presentation was great.

Infinite Warfare is on the unfortunate end of compound hatred.

People like to hate on CoD

People like to hate what's popular

People like to hate Activision

People feel Modern Warfare Remastered is being held hostage

People are bored/done/over the future warfare thing, and it keeps going further into the future

Infinity Ward is, if we are being generous, a shadow of it's former self

All that together = new CoD is the worst ever.

I like the series, but I have to admit, I'm sick of the future war thing. Yet, what they showed more recently at E3 looks interesting enough, so I'm giving it a chance. I thought I was done with the series with Ghosts because that game was hot trash, but I enjoyed Advanced Warfare in plot and multi a lot, and the multi of Black Ops 3 won me over, even though the campaign was a dumpster fire.

The series is a bit oversaturated IMO, but the games do make efforts to change things up despite using the same essential framework for the multiplayer, but that's often overlooked because CoD sucks.

We're going to be at that point pretty soon. I can think of No Man's Sky, Everspace, and Star Citizen off the top of my head. I'm sure there's some more, but I can't think of all the names right now.

As a CoD fan, I'm doubting it because it's made by the same studio that made Ghosts (which wasn't very good). At least they're going full space sci-fi though.

Or people who were fans of CoD from the very beginning.

The series ain't what it used to be. For better or worse, it's definitely very different.

The only thing that makes me dislike it is the fact that MW Remastered is a pre-order bonus for the $80 version, which is easily the worst example of pre-order exclusive content ever.

Loved MW and MW2, slowly stopped caring after, skipping Ghosts buy playing AW.

Hope it brings back the audience, but I liked the COD games for the present day-ish stuff. Will give it a go via rental as I have since MW3, but there wasn't really much they could do to bring me fully back anyway, so.

Well you said it in the OP, the hate is because it is COD and MW4 is attached to it. Not the quality of the game, because not a single person here has played it yet.

I do understand people being disinterested in what it is offering though.

I was kind of looking for something not futurey but what they showed at E3 was pretty cool. I usually end up getting Cod even if I bitch about it.

I haven't heard any since E3. The reveal looked really bland and boring, E3 reversed course on that. I was critical of it but I'm in now - game looks super fun.

It has my attention, the SP can be something special if you look at the E3 demo.

Call of Duty has become so big that they need a good SP for the casual players and a robust MP for the competitive players and e-sports integration and making that fun to watch.
Makes you wonder how they can combine all those things going forward.

See, here's your problem. You have just a bad taste in games.

I have no opinion on Infinite Warfare, it looks alright to me

I have played literally all of the FPS is my point. I will wade through shit. I have intimate knowledge of garbage.

Anything within 200 years with not dissimilar technology is near-future. They still have guns that fire bullets.

And that immediately goes to a standard COD shooting sequence. I don't believe that the space combat is going to be a significant thing. Treyarch made a big deal of the jet combat in BO2 and it amounted to nothing.

They fire bullets in Halo.

My game takes place 100k+ years in the future, and I got plenty of guns with bullets.

That 'standard' sequence has some cool-ass grenades and takes place inside a spaceship. Didn't they show decompression and stuff too, or am I misremembering?

We're going to be at that point pretty soon. I can think of No Man's Sky, Everspace, and Star Citizen off the top of my head. I'm sure there's some more, but I can't think of all the names right now.

No Man's Sky dogfighting did not look this good. Everspace is pretty, but it's a roguelike, so it's not bespoke. Star Citizen wants to be an MMO, not a blockbuster.

Or people who were fans of CoD from the very beginning.

The series ain't what it used to be. For better or worse, it's definitely very different.

I have been a fan since the beginning. I'm hyped as fuck.

I've been meaning to ask this question too, OP. Years ago I had told a friend I wanted a future set Call of Duty, something like Battlefield 2142 but with the CoD movie-like flash. Now we finally get it and everyone absolutely shits on it because all they seemingly want is the same game again.

At first I had no interest in another Call of Duty, and I haven't been interested in one since maybe Black Ops 1. But after seeing the footage at Sony's press conference, I was convinced. It looks like a breath of fresh air honestly, and the gameplay looked incredibly fun and polished. It's baffling how people were impressed by the E3 footage only to get upset when they learned it was CoD. Like, they are actively trying to dislike it. It's weird.

I also played Legendary and Darkest of Days!

I'm not down on IW but the on-foot combat segment didn't look too hot and the space combat had similarities to the floaty way-too-small-an-area fighter jet segments of past CoDs.

I'm down (as I enjoyed both AW and Blops3) but I really wish there was more breathing room between TF2 and IW. It's like a Sophie's Choice up in this bitch.
