doesnt need to be the WHOLE movie, can even be one scene which is good whilst the rest sucks.

I've always been fond of this example

I think it looks great.

Movie = spawn

Jurassic Park during the night scenes. Not only the dinos are CGI (and animatronics), but some of the vehicles are too!

Spawn is definitely a movie in which it's CGI has not aged well at all, heck even at release it was iffy, you had things like Malebolgia, ruler of Hell, with a mouth that didn't animate, but yeah I always thought that masking effect was the best coolest looking thing in the movie.

My mind was completely blown when I found out they didn't use a combination of prosthetic and CGI, but straight all CGI, that's god-tier ILM right there.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that

Watched the second and third films again a few months ago and Davy Jones is still extremely impressive. The rest of his crew not so much, but Jones is still A-1.

Even though the film also uses a mixture of physical props & animatronics, 'Jurrasic Park' still holds up pretty well with it's use of computer generated imagry. 'The Abyss' is a more pure example of using CGI that has aged pretty well.

T2 and JP are the best examples out there, although some might confuse practical effects with CGI in those two. The Matrix also holds up perfectly (unlike its sequels).

Panic Room's CGI in the long take couldn't be better, it looks like it came out in 2016.

Here's a video showing off the CGI.

I thought that always looked extremely artificial (and therefore fake) to be honest. All of Fincher's "impossible" shots in Panic Room really stick out and take me out of the movie immediately.

I was going to also say Spawn(that specific scene as well) and Davy Jones. Though I don't consider Davy Jones as being from an old movie.

I guess it can depend on how often the crew members are shown, like in this shot:

Coral guy on the left and the shark man are seen pretty often so I remember their CGI is pretty good and then everyone else varies on how close or far they are to the camera.

I really love all their designs, I spent a lot of time just going over their concept arts and going frame by frame to see what sea creatures they're made out of.

Jurassic Park thread?

I mean, the movie is over 20 years old and the night attack scene still looks real. Just goes to show you what clever lighting and set dressing can do for a scene. They hide the CG really, really well.

That particular image is good, especially for the time, but the hell stuff and tons of other cg in that film is terrible.

James Cameron is the king. Terminator 2 and The Abyss still mostly hold up. Jurassic Park is another one.

First tragedy, then farce.
Basically: good directors the thread.

I saw ghost and the darkness recently and it held up, but I think it's 90% practical.

Starship Troopers already mentioned, I love how it looks still, obviously a bit dated but not horrible like a bunch of the era.

In a few years I think District 9 will be looked at impressively still. that movie captured exactly what it set out to do.

Jurassic Park is insane. It has no business looking that good 23 years later.

The T-Rex attack will never look dated. It's perfect.

to play devil's advocate... i recently watched the star wars prequels. cgi is obvs dated but it held up a lot better than i thought it would. especially considering like 80% of the content is CGI

Good choice. The reason this holds up is because there's no reason to expect this to be any more detailed than it already was.

Thanks, and I agree. The reason why so many of these examples work is because the cgi in each of them makes sense in context. Like the cartoonishness of The Mask, for example.
