People, seriously, read this:

Imagine the handheld is down clocked when you play it as a portable. Once you hook it up to the dock, it upclocks the GPU for a boost in power because it no longer has to worry about battery life.

There's a lot of potential here.

Ohhh, you make a good point. Kinda similar to their patent they had with 'boosted power' when hooked up traditionally to a TV.

Now while that was seemingly using some kind of 'cloud' or 'hub' tech (extra piece of tech in the home) to do so, this still may be the case where it can boost via a hub of some sorts.

Is there any negative issues to integrity or wear on the product doing so, often?

I hope this is a handheld game device that just happens to be able to connect to your tv when you are home and that a legit home console is also coming.

Sounds awesome, in theory. Can't wait for real details, especially pricing. Throughout the life of the 3DS and Wii U I felt like neither had a steady enough stream of games coming, but both certainly had fucking great games. So, unifying them is exactly what I want.

I don't understand why they'd go for the hybrid when handhelds are doa everywhere but japan

Their console hardware is even more doa, so fusing it with the handheld will allow for more software and less cost, alongside more third party software.

It was obviously the only choice for their dedicated hardware strategy.

And even i am moderately surprised

i'd say it hurts that i'm always right - but it doesn't anymore - it's just natural and seamless ;)

My first impression with this was im not interested....I'll have to wait and see though to be interested. Once again it may just come down to games which is at it should be.

I'm here for it, but not if it's some underpowered, glorified handheld that just hooks up to your TV and has ugly PS2 era graphics.
Nobody asked for that.

The hell are you getting ps2 era graphics from? We are talking around Xbox One level, higher than Wii U by a good margin.

So NX releases 3.5 years after the PS4 and has graphical capabilities like the X1.

lmao...

Nintendo did it again: Lackluster hardware compared to it´s competitors.

Discrete GPU at base station is perfectly possible if they use some technology akin to Thunderbold 3 over USB Type C. It all depends on how much Nintendo is willing to invest.

Better graphics chip than the wiiu, and you call it ps2 grade graphics before you havn't even seen anything shown? lol

Hyperbole is used a bit too freely on this forum.

I read the OP, but is this actually more powerful than the Wii U?

I'm seriously considering just picking up a cheap Wii U.
Read this:
Tegra X1 (Maxwell) is already vastly more powerful than Wii U. If this uses X2 (Pascal, 16nm) it will possibly be around Xbox One when used as a home console. So yes, Zelda will look better.

Which is incredibly underpowered. The Scorpio and Neo will be out soon which will blow away this console as far as specs go and the NX will be mid generation when the PS5 comes out. I hope Nintendo has a lot of games to keep the masses occupied with their lack of third party support.
they won't
It's underpowered in absolute terms, but not for what it it is (if Eurogamer is correct). Also Neo and Scorpio won't prevent PS4/X1 from getting games, and this NX would be in the same ballpark.

why do all these rumors keep calling them cartridges?
do we call 3ds games cartridges?

i feel like unless the thing has a big hollow plastic shell, it's just a "card"
i dont put sd cartridges into my camera

calling it a cartridges implies something like an n64/genesis/nes/etc game

Thank you! :)

The interesting feature of a cartridge is that publishers can put their own hardware inside them. If NX titles cannot do that, then the term cartridge in this sense is only PR preying upon nostalgia.

Damn if this isn't a great way to address hardcore and casuals alike.

Imagine if the dock was optional. So say they sell just the handheld for, I don't know, $199. Then if you want a more powerful set up for home, you can buy it with the dock for $299. I think this could entice a lot of people with different budgets in mind. At the end of the day, they'll still be playing the same games no matter what they buy.

Here's another thing, since the NX is basically a handheld, kiss the hardware storage goodbye. At most we will have 128GB of storage and how large will the games be for those who go digital?

The thing is it sounds like they are absolutely prioritising the handheld part.

The TV part sounds like a bit of handy extra functionality.

Thats a good move for me. I am much more interested in buying this now considering I am unlikely to leave Sony or Microsoft for console gaming.

Oh I can see why a core Nintendo handheld gamer might be happy..

...if you're a Nintendo home console gamer you should be pissed as you'll likely be paying $100 more for this hybrid ...than a standalone console with the same tech would cost/are getting a far weaker console than you should be getting for the price.

The major problem from the handheld side of things is that while Nintendo fans here might be willing to pay over $200 for a handheld...the mass market has shown they won't.

If this rumor turns out real, I'm excited. But let's keep in mind: Eurogamer "leaked" that Mother 3 would release on April 20th and I'm still waiting for that,

Fuck yeah. Not really a fan of home consoles.

As somebody who 80% of his time playing ps4 was with remote play, this is a dream come true.

I want some receipts, because all the videos on YouTube just show the X1 being used to run shitty looking mobile games.
Can someone provide me with a video where I can see what the NX might be capable of?

The past four 3D Sonic games have had handheld versions which look and play differently. That's what NX is getting. That's also why it's not getting Mania; that's console-only.

This seems like a bit of a stretch to me. I don't imagine the NX is going to be weaker than the Wii U and I don't think Sonic is going to be pushing the PS4/XBO to a breaking point. It's most likely going to be optimized fairly well.

If this is a hybrid it sounds stupid. If it's a handheld that can also play on the TV that should be fine. Focuses on Nintendo's strengths. Probably just a Japanese games machine, but that's fine for them and likely an improvement over the 3DS.

Like almost everyone? We've had rumors of this for a very very long time. And almost all of us have been for it. You are just different, your getting upset over a piece of hardware...

I doubt "everyone" asked for it. The market certainly didn't. They keep running away from parity and pushing themselves to further alienation by third parties.

Blah.

Hmm interesting. So the dock may be the supplemental computing device? Could it contain extra hardware to make games look nicer on the TV, like an SLI type arrangement?

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
depends. if it uses an x2, it should be easy enough. if it uses an x1, it's not likely.

This is a nintendo machine... think hard now as to which they'll go with ;)

Hmm interesting. So the dock may be the supplemental computing device?

i really don't think there's a supplemental computing device :

nintendo have merged their console and handheld dev teams in the last X years
This is a ONE SHOT hybrid - the machine will likely be a pretty much Nvidia Shield Tab level machine with a prop controller
The "handheld" will have hdmi out as is
The "dock" will be a more convenient place to put your machine and will have support for expanded storage (HDD maybe even included etc)

If it's a Shield Tab with a N mark on it, it's not the end of the world. Joking aside - the K1/Shield Tab is probably one of my favourite machines in the past decade.
I wouldn't go without it - even now.

So if Nintendo provide the exact same thing and add Splatoon, Mario, Zelda etc then i don't see the issue (assuming all nintendo fans didn't already buy a K1)

Detachable controllers means you could potentially do GearVR style VR depending on how heavy it is. ARM means it should be 3DS backwards compatible, with more than enough processing power to run 3DS games at HD resolutions with a Drastic style solution.

This....could actually work.

As usual with a handheld, I'm really curious about screen quality and battery life, particularly the screen part as Nintendo has a terrible track record on that front.

Dude Nintendo could of won e3 this year:
Pokemon go/silly badge thing
Zelda aka game of the show
Baby nes
Nx portable goodness

Guess they didn't have the nx games ready.

After how vanilla and uninteresting the Neo and Scorpio announcements were, it's good to see someone is willing to try something different in the home console space.

Not in the same ballpark because it's powered by Tegra. Developers aren't going to want to deal with this when everything else is x86.
