So this means the new Zelda game will be portable. It also means people will get the home console versions of Monster Hunter and mainline Pokemon they've been clamoring for. This thing will surely be at least a moderate success.

i keep hearing about tegra x2. is this chip out? whats the specs? are there rumored specs if its not out yet? Is it confirmed to exist or just a good assumption?

There is no 'X2' as such - it's just a term used for the rumoured replacement of X1 afaik

Smartphones have killed the need to carry more than 1 mobile device. Pokemon Go has proven that.

Keep in mind market differences. That's true in the West, and especially the US where we mostly live in houses with multiple TVs, drive ourselves to work etc.

Very different in the east, and especially Japan where people are living in small apartments, have fewer TVs, and use public transit almost exclusively.

This device allows all games to reach both markets. People in the west can just leave it in the dock most of the time and use it as a console. But also have the ability to grab when going on a trip etc.--as well as those who like portables of course. While in the east they can use it as a portable and rarely use the dock.

As long as it's priced right to not seem excessive to people who will mostly just use it one way or the other, it could be a best of both worlds kind of situations.

Gsync was not a think I was thinking of, but it'd make a lot of since if they are partnering with Nvidia.

Are they saying it's weaker than the Wii U?

Sounds okay I guess. I'm waiting for games.

Absolutely not weaker than the Wii U. Probably about on par with X1 once all is said and done.

So I'm coming around to this idea in a big way, and for a couple main reasons;

- This should mean that all of Nintendo's teams are now working on the same platform.
- That *should* theoretically mean much more games on this console.
- Which means no more handheld-only Marios, Zeldas, Fire Emblems, etc. No more "Man, this Kid Icarus game is really good, I just wish it was on a console"

Assuming all those things, the software output for this should theoretically at least double, with a ton more games coming out for it.

Monster Hunter is now a console game. Phoenix Wright is now a console game. POKEMON is now a console game. Likewise, Splatoon 2, Breath of the Wild, and other big budget titles, are now portable games.

I can get behind that, in a big way.

I... Don't see it.

On concept it looks cool, but I think performance is going to take a hit. Even more if it can't compete with Xb1 and Ps4 graphics-wise

I'll wait until I hear the full story from Nintendo with all the details before I comment on what I think, because I don't know what I think. I guess all I could say is that nothing in this info stands out in any significant way to me.

Here's the Nintendo NX design (NB: not Nintendo's illustration, but useful pic of concept)

Since the first bit of news about NX, how it is supposed to unify (Nintendo's) development of handheld and console games I always thought that NX would be a console-handheld hybrid of some sort. Play at home on the big screen, take the controller with you to play on the go.

If this actually comes true then this could potentially change the console market in a big way (and subjectively in a better way than PS4 Neo and Xbox Scorpio are potentially shaping the console future).

I just want this to be true.
It would also overlap with Ubisoft's recent comment about NX probably being successful with casual gamers again. Everyone played with some sort of handheld or smartphone before, so everyone would be right at home.

That said, the only thing I hope this will have is decent power (at least as powerful as the Wii U) and an HD screen (at least 720p).

And I want to know how additional controllers would look like, because that thing sure as hell has to have some sort of multiplayer. And alternative control methods (Arcade Sticks, etc.).

X1, X2 chips

What if...

There is a solely portable version that has the X1 and the portable/home hybrid has the X2, each apropriately priced.

Could be interesting?

I'm imagining that you'll have 2 controller halves that attach to the game pad. When the system is plugged into the base station, the controller halves will just snap into each other or perhaps a mid section to turn them into a fully wireless controller.

Tom Phillips of Eurogamer just tweeted this. Not Nintendo's illustration, but a "useful pic of the concept"

How will the pro controller and GameCube controller work for this I wonder.

Pro controller is wireless so if supported it could just sync to the device in portable (on kickstand etc.) or console modes.

GameCube would just require USB adapter and only work in console docked mode if supported I'd assume.

It honestly does not make sense for the North American market. No one will bother carrying a large portable device with them when they have their phone. And it will undoubtedly be severely underpowered as a home console, which means they lose what few customers they still had in that market as well.
yep, pretty much this

A hybrid would be the Wii U with a gamepad that could operate without the console, this just sounds like a handheld with an HDMI cord - a bit disappointed to be honest. Nintendos console efforts are so above and beyond any of the junk they tend to publish on their handhelds, although if it's as powerful as the Wii U I'm totally on board.

When Nintendo saw people starting to do this, they knew exactly what they needed to do.

Bravo!

Edit: Next year they will reveal a Gear VR style attachment if VR is still a thing by then.

What are these magic planes with that much leg room but 90s train seats?

Can someone photoshop 'NX is not a hybrid' on that infamous Comical Ali picture?

Never be certain about anything, even when Nintendo says it. The amount of posts on this board that say it's 100% not going to be a hybrid because Nintendo said so...I've lost count how many I've read over the past year or so.

How does the rumored graphics chip compare to the latest generation of smartphones?

No BC is unfortunate but not unexpected, glad we'll hear more soon so I might grab a Wii U until NX.

If devs are excited about NX, a large part of that is likely because they won't be in an arms race for graphics, which can allow for a lot more risks and unique experiences.

Japanese and indie devs. They are the 3rd party who can find a space on NX.

It makes sense. This is Nintendo essentially acknowledging that they just can't cut it in the console space but instead of throwing in the towel, they'll be leveraging the handheld space (that they completely dominate) to make hardware that can sell as a handheld with console capabilities.
