Here's the Nintendo NX design (NB: not Nintendo's illustration, but useful pic of concept)

The concept isn't particularly grabbing me at the moment.

Smartphone gaming has eaten into dedicated handheld territory for a while now, so I can't see casual gamers opting to pick up a dedicated unit.

On the console side of things, if it's weaker than XB1 & PS4 (not even considering Neo & Scorpio) it's going to have a hard time there too, unless it's priced significantly lower. Third party support remains a question mark.

It's fine to not expect third-parties, considering how Nintendo has been since the Wii U, but that doesn't help it sell systems. That's one of the biggest problems the Wii U had, and unless they plan to start pushing more games out, it'll be a similar story.

But, that being said, 3DS had some decent support. So it won't be a Wii U failure if that's the case.

Tom Phillips of Eurogamer just tweeted this. Not Nintendo's illustration, but a "useful pic of the concept"

[edit]Go to HELL nibel

Uhh, what? So when the system is docked and you wanted to play a game with the controller, would they snap together? Would you have to hold each piece in each hand? How would this work for two-player games when the controllers aren't symmetrical? I hope this is just the illustration and not how the system actually functions.

Ah, no BC. Well that sucks.

That makes me concerned that it's going to be another shovelware platform if companies doesn't embrace it. They should at least made Pokemon Go compatible on it if they want to help sell it somewhat.

The idea in itself isn't bad in my opinion. I do however think it's not going to be a success sales wise unless it's cheap.

Outside of die hard Nintendo fans, I doubt it's going to get many people on board.

forget about the power, 35GB max cartridges will rule out GTA VI already, unless you want compressed to hell assets.

In what universe is Nintendo ever going to get a GTA anyway?

Guys, just face it, 3rd party games aren't happening for this thing.

For the last few years you've bought a Nintendo console to play Nintendo games and I doubt that will ever change at this point. Accept it or invest in another console/PC.

4.) It's a handheld so obviously physical discs are a non-starter, so cartridges make sense from that perspective. 32 GB cartridges could potentially eat into margins, but presumably games are largely going to be $60 from now on, and that should offset the cost. 32 GB is a bit tight for high end PS4/XB1 games, but again I'm not convinced getting those is the main goal of the system.

.

This alone kills AAA support not the specs but space.

And that's a game with limited voice work and barely any CGI/Pre-rendered cutscenes.

Several games are way past the 32GB mark and it will keep increasing.

Exacly. Uncharted 4 for example is 50GB last time I checked.

Much as I want this to have an X2 chip and thus solve the underpowered home console side of things, we know they're not selling this at a loss.

As a handheld, it's everything I've ever dreamed of, hybrid concept included. But as a home console when you take away the context, its potential Wii U+/sub Xbone specs are disappointing.

Based on that Eurogamer video, the X1 gpu has shown:

- Doom goes from 720p/60 fps on PS360 to 1080p/60 fps.
- Trine gets bumped from 720p/30 fps to 1080p with much less stable and more variable frame rate.
- Half Life 2 is at 1080p but with the same inconsistent frame rates.

Doesn't sound too impressive. Zelda will be lucky if it got a 1080p bump on NX.
Trine 2 was dynamic res on PS360, up to 720p but often below it. Also the Shield TV test held 30fps effortlessly, where are you getting unstable/variable frame rate from? Certainly not that DF video, the green line held steady at 30?

Trine 2 actually makes a neat comparison across platforms:

360/PS3: dynamic resolution up to 720p, 30fps
Wii U: 720p, 30fps
Shield TV (X1): 1080p, 30fps
PS4: 1080p, 60fps

Of course comparing an Android device to locked down dedicated consoles is always going to be an apples and oranges scenario. To draw a broad comparison to what a closed X1 console might be capable of consider the dedicated games you see on Vita versus games running on an iPad 3.

You have one competitor with a failing handheld and one with no handheld. Now there's the idea of making the console and the handheld the same thing. Even if it's not an immediate priority, I'm sure there'd definitely be some intrigue there.

Except the other two have realized that the handheld market is no longer viable.

do you know what 3rd parties are? there will be 3rd party support. maybe not the AAA western 3rd party support you want but that was never Nintendo's bag, baby.

At the very least, it will get the heavy Square and Capcom support that Nintendo handhelds usually get, which is a fair deal better than the Wii U had.

Except the other two have realized that the handheld market is no longer viable.

It is if you have Pokemon and Monster Hunter.

So, how about that extra computing patent? Could they sell those for more hardcore players, so you can kind of build your own device? Like that Project Ara phone thing?

If the detachable controllers on this thing are what allow for multiplayer, and thus allow me to, on a flight, take off the controllers and play local multuiplayer with my friend beside me while using the tablet as a screen, that's fucking awesome.

Am I the only one who sees that as an incredibly innovative feature?

And they should call it the "Nintendo Entertainment System", or just "Nintendo". Even "Nintendo NX" would be fine. Keep it simple, and put the Nintendo name and brand squarely in the forefront.

Absolutely. If this thing is revealed as "Wii Go", I will scream.

The things I am the most exited is the unified OS between handheld and console ( which in this case is the same thing), which hopefully means that they share the library ( I wonder if some more demanding games can only be played on the console NX?). Which hopefullly means there will be less droughts.
I like Cartridge, it´s just a shame that we won´t have the smooth edges for the disk like with the WiiU.
edit : Even tho they say there´s no BC, I hope it´s supports at the very least the Wiiu pro controller

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Just a huge smug prick smile all day. 4 years of vindication. I didn't set fire to no Nintendo executive houses. I simply infiltrated their minds and told them what to do. I run Nintendo now, NintendoGAF. Scream. Howl. Repent.

Team Hybrid takes the iron throne, lay the heretics and charlatans before us for their judgement.

Detachable controllers sounds very fragile. That seems like a problem waiting to happen.

What happened to Iwata explicitly saying this wouldn't be a hybrid system, but multiple systems like iPhone/iPad? I wonder if there is a more beefed up NX home system coming next year or at some point they got rid of that idea.

I really was not expecting this. I don't know what to think and I'm glad I didn't sell my Wii U yet, because that might actually end up being the best way to play Zelda.

Just stick it in a neoprene sleeve. Works fine with Vita etc., and barely adds any size or weight. So unless you're one of those people always wearing baggy ass clothes with pockets that can fit a portable (especially a 3DSXL, because fuck the kiddy hand sized regular version and it's puny screen), it's a minor inconvenience at best and takes up little extra room in your bag/purse/briefcase.
You mean the 3DSXL that you can't fit on your person and has a pixel density out of 2002?

Your vastly overestimating the difficulty of putting a 3DS in your pocket. I take my wallet, 2 phones (one as an MP3 player), and my 3DS to work every day. I also don't carry a bag so it not being able to fit in a pocket would kill its portability.

I want to see it, just cause it sounds insane, but this is gonna flop hard. A handheld first console in a world where cell phones dominate mobile is insanity.

They've both already done the reverse - let you take your home console onto your portable/mobile.

If they were in Nintendo's shoes, the apparent NX approach (portable-first) would make sense for their business. As is it wouldn't.
