No BC is ridiculous.
At this stage Nintendo should launch some kind of monthly subscription service that gives you access to their back catalogue of games.

Hardcore Nintendo fans must have bought multiple versions of the same game across multiple devices so many times by now...

I'm pretty sure Virtual Console software will transfer since you'll be logging in with your Nintendo Network ID.

Software made specifically for the Wii U or 3DS respectively (Ex. Fast Racing Neo and Harmoknight) won't make the move.

Wow!!!

They actually did it! First Pokémon Go, now a 2 in 1 system, King Nintendo's heading back to Wii era levels of relevance, I can feel it!

Looking forward to the possibilities:
- no more disc scratches to worry about, cartridges will likely eliminate load times too
- expecting Xbox 1 level graphics or close to it so I can see slightly scaled down ports of FFVII Remake and Kingdom Hearts 3
- hoping for all currently owned VC games to be transferable to the new machine
- hopefully no more of those rancid gyro controls since this isn't BC
- ......what if the cartridge slot lets you play the 3DS library? I know there's no BC with Wii U but that would be amazing!
- imagine a $250 console and $40 games? Huge bonus vs. the Bone and PS4 with their $60 games

The Wii U is a great system but I'm happy to see Nintendo aiming for that #1 spot again. This is too much for a Tuesday. Whew!

games are going to be $60

Super exited about this!
I've always wanted a hybrid where you can always play all your games no matter if you're out and about or at home.
Third parties will show up AFTER the NX is a success like they did with the Wii, not before.
Hopefully a lot of Japanese third parties will jump aboard since it is a handheld too.
Imagine if we got another era with Nintendo DS levels up third party support from Japan!

Ok what if

-Base handheld unit $200, can play on TV by itself with just an HDMI. Wii U-like power.
-Dock $200, powers up the handheld to Neo/Scorpio levels, does nothing without the handheld.

Sold separately. That way they can actually price the thing like a handheld while also appealing to the console crowd.

As a huge Nintendo fan (and pretty much lifelong Nintendo fan), I'd like to chime in on all of this. I'm speaking purely as a hardcore fan, and not evaluating how successful it will be with mass audiences.

The Good: I can buy one Nintendo console, and have access to every game they release, rather than having to buy two consoles to be able to play everything they put out, and I have the option of choosing whether or not to play said games on the go, or on my TV (definitely my preference). That's fantastic! Imagine having Fire Emblem, Pokémon, Mario, Mario Kart, Smash, Zelda, Pikmin, and so much more all on one console! Great stuff indeed!

The Bad: This console's power will likely be limited, and it likely won't be able to compete with the PS4 and X1, let alone Neo and Scorpio due to the portable focus (unless I'm misunderstanding it's capabilities?), so the dream of, say, playing a Zelda game with the graphical fidelity of Witcher 3 is indeed dead, at least for now. I also have to wonder whether the games will be designed as portable experiences first, and console experiences second? Most games designed with portable consoles in mind seem to have different design philosophies applied to them. A link Between Worlds is quite a far cry from Breath of the Wild, for instance. I do hope this doesn't mean the death of "Console Style" Nintendo games, as that would be quite disappointing to me. This seems to be Nintendo exiting the traditional console market, and my biggest fear stemming from that is that the likes of Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Galaxy, etc. might be the last of their kind, due to not appealing to a portable market, or working as well in a portable format. This is all wild speculation on my part, though, which hopefully won't come to pass.

TL:DR: I'm excited by the prospect of having every game Nintendo releases available to me on one console, but I'm also concerned that with NX's portable focus, Nintendo may move away from designing games as fully fledged console style experiences, and that the likes of Breath of the Wild could be the last of their kind, due to Nintendo wanting to appeal to a portable market, more so than a console market.

Maybe the reason people were saying it was because all of Nintendo's comments and other evidence highly suggested it. I mean just because you find speculation boring isn't really a reason you should doubt it. That's silly.

I didn't doubt it. I just found the speculation boring. It was the same conversation for a few years.

So no backwards compatibility, forced handheld integration, and gimped mobile hardware.

This is literally the worst case scenario for me. All of my hype for NX is gone. Half of the reason I wanted the NX was to play all of the Wii U games I missed, and the other half was to play Breath of the Wild at a higher res/better graphics. Neither of these things seem to be possible if these leaks are to be believed. Ugh.

First statement sure

Second statement makes no sense. It will be more powerful than the WiiU and play old games at a better performance

Did we forget what WiiU is made out of?

Not really appealing to the console crowd...as the console crowd who don't want handhelds likely won't be happy at wasting their money on any handheld component that they don't want.

A standalone console that doesn't need the handheld at all would be preferable and cheaper.

As someone else said...going by Nintedo's past history it'll be a legit miracle if its a decent screen. OLED would be nuts. Good but never gonna happen

I know you're right, but just imagine it.

Nintendos art style on an oled screen?!

I have a Wii U connected to an oled which is great but my god I can't tolerate off screen play on that shitty display.

I think another way to look at this is that Microsoft/Sony want Western core gamers, so they've made consolized PCs. Nintendo is targeting Japan, casual gamers, and younger audiences, so they've set their hopes on a consolized smartphone, while also going out and making smartphone games directly.
That's a pretty interesting way of looking at it. (It also matches the technical decisions of course)

To people that already say "I'm out" at this point why is that? Is it because you wished for a more powerful home console?

Well, for me, I've never really been emotionally invested in Nintendo ip's. I haven't even owned a Nintendo console since the Gamecube, considering their hardware tech always seems to be a full generation behind their competitors.

I already have an ipad pro for handheld gaming and a PS4/PC for cutting edge visuals. With the Neo arriving within a few months and Scorpio next year, I just don't see the need to pick up another underpowered machine, which will almost certainly be focused on their traditional stable of company exclusives. Of course, it's possible that this NX console/handheld hybrid might offer something truly unique that demands consideration but, for now, I'm perfectly content to wait for Neo and Scorpio.

Nintendo has been using the same architecture since Gamecube, there had to be a change eventually especially with the radical shift in ideology (combining mobile and home divisions).

Yeah, this sounds pretty cool. Makes sense that this is "the gimmick".

And this means everyone can play Ace Attorney and Pokemon! Finally we can put the "Pokemon on console" arguments to rest.

Interesting rumor. I hope that September time frame for the unveiling is true. That way I can decide whether or not I should get rid of or keep my Wii U.

I like the sound of the rumor but really have to see the OS and the controller first before making any decisions.

Sounds pretty good to me. Didn't see a hybrid coming, but the concept sounds fine. I never expected the thing to be a power house in the first place.

I guess one thing that really appeals to me is not having to buy two systems for the full Nintnedo library.

Really looking forward to the official reveal.

Having thought about it, the only way NX becomes successful is if they completely body all support for 3DS and focus entirely on NX. Everything gets released on NX or nothing.

Because the combination of 3DS and mobile decimates a lot of the potential NX market. Vita has proven that there is a finite market for high power mobile console gaming, and the only thing left after all that is your traditional home console experience. And with the power not approaching OG Xbone levels, traditional Nintendo IPs aside, I don't think that home experience will be as strong as XB1/PS4, let alone Scorpio/Neo.

I strongly suspect when the official unveiling happens, I'll have the same feelings I had for NX that I had for Wii U (and I feel I was right then...). I'd love to be proven wrong though.

Sometimes I do really think Nintendo should have just focused entirely on Mobile for their long term future.

I wonder if there will be any long term plans for a smartphone version of the NX. Though, creating a compelling phone is a whole other kettle of fish, especially if Nintendo intends on using their own operating system.

So Semiaccurate was right? Nice.

I'm wondering, will the NX still have games designed to be played in smaller doses like Nintendo's previous handhelds? Playing consoles games on the Go is not always the most beneficial or desired (the PSP and Vita attest to that).

A certain Twitter rumormonger is insisting that there's a 3TF traditional console yet to be announced, lol. Makes no sense given that any such device would have to be aimed primarily at the West, yet Eurogamer's sources aren't aware of it.

I'm warming to this idea.

It goes without saying that this needs to look slick

I think we're expecting free form displays on this thing aren't we?

It's my worry about all this. The Wii U gamepad screen is fucking *trash* if you are playing anything besides the BC games so let's hope Nintendo goes for at least a 1080p screen to match the TVs. This isn't pre-iPhone 4 anymore, handheld devices are all Retina/whatever-android-marketing-term screens now.

You're being a bit dramatic, don't you think? Wii U gamepad screen is fine. I play Pokken Tournament and MK8 laying in bed at night all of the time, and it looks just fine. Anyway the NX, no matter what it turns out to be, will obviously be a big step up.

So much for no hybrid but I really like this direction. Nintendo is the king of handheld so it's best for them to spend all the resource on that. Also, sounds like they got rid of dual screen as well. Awesome.

This is such a good news for me! I love the 3DS and I'm gonna love this NX baby as well. Playing the new Zelda outside in the park, fuck yeah!

To those saying they're not interested because of the handheld part, why not just leave it docked and treat it as a home console? I'd understand if the power aspect is off putting at this point, but choice and variety is good.

I think it's an interesting decision. In one sense, this is certainly better than the confusion of the speculated two SKU approach with different games for different devices. And this will probably be the best supported Nintendo system since SNES because first party efforts will once again be concentrated and Japan-focused third parties will have no other traditional device as their outlet. It's going to fall far short of my console-centered tech expectations, but hopefully it will still be a healthy leap from Wii U.

I'm interested to see how Nintendo will handle accounts. I can imagine buying two of these to start. One for myself, I bring my 3DS everywhere, and one for my wife and the little ones to grow into at home.

How will the account system work?

Will Nintendo allow me to create a household account connected to various sub accounts and different NX devices?

How easy is it to hop between or sync account or save data between NX devices?

Personally, I'm fine with this. I don't like playing games on portable systems any more due to comfort issues so I welcome this single-platform approach where I can play everything on the TV. I only hope that the controller is comfy or it supports the Wii U pro pad.

Remember, when evaluating any move Nintendo makes, always view it through the lens of the Japanese market. Nintendo has always been "Japan first" when it comes to strategy and this is no different. Japan is mostly handheld and consoles aren't doing well there. If Nintendo doesn't want to go mobile only this is their best bet. Building a standalone console is folly given Japan's disinterest in them, and even if they could, they could never compete with Sony. This is for the best.

Yeah, it's going to have weak graphics for a console. If you are a graphics whore (simply won't play games with graphical flaws, sub-native resolutions, etc.) , this isn't for you. Make peace with it. Stay away and forget about it. Just don't be a bitter asshole about it and shit up threads moaning about this for years to come.

Third party support is probably going to be lacking. But with a single platform to support, Nintendo's output is going to be better able to keep up. Furthermore, if it takes off, Japanese third parties might hop on board. The West will ignore it. That's okay, I've got other platforms for their games. In the end it's going to be a platform for Nintendo games, as usual. Again, make peace with it and don't be bitter.

Not liking this cartridge format though; too much cost and old Nintendo cut.

I understand those concerns but the PSP proved that disc media sucks ass for portable gaming. You don't want motors and moving parts sucking batteries dry.

I like the idea, but this type of system would NOT "bring back casuals" in any sense of the word. It sounds nearly as complicated as the Wii U, if not even MORE complicated.

The interesting thing about that outlook is one of those audiences is deflating and one of those is inflating.

I'm starting to feel that NX better have the greatest launch lineup in history. I will be very interested to see how third party supports NX going forward.

How would this clever external cooling solution actually work though? Is there any example of such a product on the market that has a meaningful impact on temperature?

I was thinking fans in the docking station that pull air out of vents on the bottom of the NX when it's connected to the dock. It would work well if you could create a decent enough seal. We're not talking dissipating 90w.

Please be an oled screen.

If the display is as shitty as the usual lcd panels Nintendo use then I'll be gutted.

You'll be gutted. But that's a good thing, as OLED is shitty infantile tech that has uniformity issues, with no real perceivable value other than a bullet point on a power point slide that's used to drive up price.
