The more I think about it, the more I personally get excited. I always get Nintendo hardware no matter what, but just think about the potential lineup on this thing. Despite what people say, I don't think this will limit their developmental scope at all. We'll still get big and ambitious traditional console experiences, but having the ability to play that shit out at the park or something will be incredibly amazing.

They better launch this baby with a new Mario. We know it's already getting Zelda.

And I think the current mobile architecture out there has redefined what we think of as traditional console and mobile gaming. These things are powerful as fuck now.

Makes me wanna dust off the old Turbo Express. Lol. The handheld portion does zero for me. I'm not interested in games on the go outside of my phone anymore. I'll stand by to see what the performance on the dock will do/cost, but my interest is pretty low. I was hoping the gimmick would be something that would pull me away from my pc/vr.

I have no interest in a handheld, but I don't think Nintendo could survive in an all out drag race vs Sony and MS were they to release a full blown traditional console that attempted to outpower the other 2. This seems like a unique strategy that could pay off big time by appealing to practicality vs gimmicky bullshit. Cautiously optimistic.

A certain Twitter rumormonger is insisting that there's a 3TF traditional console yet to be announced, lol. Makes no sense given that any such device would have to be aimed primarily at the West, yet Eurogamer's sources aren't aware of it.
I feel like Voldemort lol.

Emily told me this last night. And I was always of the belief my info was about the NX stationary home console with amd chipsets and hers was an Nvidia powered handheld. So nothing has shocked me.

I'll gladly eat crow and accept the L if nx is revealed and there's no home console.

So if this thing is a dual console/handheld, does that mean nintendo will stop making regular handhelds? Does this mean future Pokemon games will actually have significantly better graphics than now?
That's basically concern #1 for me. For years ive wanted the main series pokemon games to make the jump to actual TV consoles and it seems this hybrid is going to make that happen.

I'm also excited for the triumphant return of cartridges.

Ok what if

-Base handheld unit $200, can play on TV by itself with just an HDMI. Wii U-like power.
-Dock $200, powers up the handheld to Neo/Scorpio levels, does nothing without the handheld.

Sold separately. That way they can actually price the thing like a handheld while also appealing to the console crowd.

I like the idea. Reminds me of the Expansion Pack for N64.

However I think the chasm is too great, going from tablet graphics to Neo levels. It would be an enormous pain to design games to take advantage of such wildly far apart specs. There wouldnt even be enough space on the cartridge to support a Neo level game. It's just not reasonable.

I think a much smaller more reasonable boost would be nice and could work. Maybe the dock could just boot the framerate and resolution, increase draw distance, add better filtering, stuff like that. Basically the same idea as upgrading from Launch PS4 to Neo. Not an enormous difference, but a solid improvement all the same.

May I have a cookie?
I was thinking fans in the docking station that pull air out of vents on the bottom of the NX when it's connected to the dock. It would work well if you could create a decent enough seal. We're not talking dissipating 90w.
The problem with vents is they'd expose the internals of the handheld to dust, debris, water etc. Maybe this isn't really a big deal but I don't think Nintendo handhelds have ever done it..

One thing I love is that it sounds like they may not be too concerned about how small and 'mobile' this device is.

You can't compete with smartphones on portability. For playing on the bus or train, smartphones are and always will be king. But no one I knew ever played their Nintendo portables there anyway. (I and knew a 100+ people with DS's back in the day.) They were for portable use around the home, or while the TV was busy, or on the toilet, or when you couldn't sleep in bed, and of course on long trips and holidays where you would inevitably have a bag to carry it anyone. All of which means that a tiny, pocket-fitting form factor really isn't essential at all.

This means they can afford to stick in a good battery, a big screen and make the controls ergonomic. And that's what they should do.

Nintendo has been using the same architecture since Gamecube, there had to be a change eventually especially with the radical shift in ideology (combining mobile and home divisions).

Exactly. Now was the time to ditch BC and ditch dual-screens. They're desperate and have a smaller audience than ever before to disappoint by dropping it, after all.

It does make you wonder how they'll handle VC, though. Hopefully, since they'll need to write all of their emulators from scratch, this means we get proper NES emulation for once.

And if we could get the DS emulation with higher resolutions that they developed for the Wii U but never unlocked that would be great too.

I'd accept having to pay an 'upgrade fee' again, but buying them all from scratch would be spitting in the face of those of us who actually bought a Wii U / 3DS. They need to play nice with their hardcore fans.

The bezel here kills it. There's no need to have all those buttons actually on the hardware on the bottom. Make some of them software, but some of them on the sides etc.

Also, I really don't feel like a camera is necessary anymore and hope they drop it for the sake of cost / bezel.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Had to pay nearly 500 bucks to be able to play all Nintendo games this gen.

With NX you will likely have to pay like the half of it at most. I know people will downplay it - but Nintendo only having to market and focus on one system will help them a lot. Also when it comes to retailer space, accessorizes and co. No more divided attention or somehow having to revitalize their dead home console when they could focus all their effort on the selling system.

Also it will be nice ti have mainline Fire Emblem on the big screen again.

Well

he's dead, so

I was actually being silly, his interviews actually confirm it was a 'hybrid' of sorts in hindsight when looking at what he described, and these rumors. It was the interwebs that was running with the 'not hybrid' context of his interviews. All he was doing was shifting focus away from the platform itself, and talking about integrating [both handheld/console] development environments... which more than confirms this now, lol.

a) a nice screen
b) decent battery life
c) a price point at $250 or lower

Pick 2

I want a) and b)

Knowing Nintendo, it will be b) and c).

Rumored 7" screen? Its like the least portable portable they could think of.
I don't know anything about that rumor, but I'm hoping that a bit after launch we start to see some variation in form factors. A version with a Vita sized screen, maybe even a smaller one akin to a 3DS top screen's size. Maybe a version later that only runs at home and has no screen. Various controllers that take the place of the standard breakaways.

The whole portable + console gimmick seems like something that leaves possibilities open, but I guess that remains to be seen. There might be other more constraining gimmicks.

Rockefellers. Skull and Bones. Microsoft. Al Qaeda. A Cabal of Bankers. The melting point of steel. What do these things have in common? Wake up sheeple, the landfill wasn't even REAL!
Why don't they just copy the Vita?

The Tegra part is disappointing, but other than that, I'd love this.

Currently, I absolutely love my Vita, and don't want hanheld gaming to go away. This would make me jump handheld ship, so to speak.

If it's backwards compatible with 3DS, and has Virtual Console, that'd be even better, as I currently only haven't bought a 3DS because I don't wish to carry 2 gaming devices and my smart phone.
If it has bc. then I could retire the Vita eventually, just get the NX, and play the 3DS games I'm missing out on now.

No BC is ridiculous.
At this stage Nintendo should launch some kind of monthly subscription service that gives you access to their back catalogue of games.

Hardcore Nintendo fans must have bought multiple versions of the same game across multiple devices so many times by now...

Uhhhh... no backwards compatibility doesn't mean there won't be a standard VC or that your current VC games can't be transferred to the NX (they probably can't but it's not impossible).

So, for now Nintendo remains doomed and not doomed.

The ever delusive Schrödinger company. Sony and Microsoft could never.

One analog stick? Its already dead

I'm guessing more buttons that visible, but the controllers I've illustrated could have an N3DS style analog nub on each side, too.

It's not intended for home multiplayer, that's what Wii U Pro controllers are for. It's an on the go solution.

I knew it. I said it was going to be a unit you hookup to a tv and it being a portable when you unhook.

So, Zelda NX really isn't going to be that much better looking than the Wii U version? Not an expert on mobile GPU's.

Having thought about it, the only way NX becomes successful is if they completely body all support for 3DS and focus entirely on NX. Everything gets released on NX or nothing.

That will probably happen pretty quick, they haven't done much with their main studios on 3DS for a while.

If it sells like the Gameboy Nintendo will be happy I guess.

It won't sell like the gameboy, it won't sell like the Wii U. I can't believe u guys actually like this idea. No traditional console from Nintendo, just a hybrid which doesn't know if its fish or meat.
It's like the worst idea they got and try to make some money with it. Who is the audience for that? The casual gamer don't play with a handheld, the "hardcore" gamer don't want a underpowered console for their tv. And on top of that is no ody interested in playing a Zelda game on a tiny screen and if I just use the console at home, it doesn't need to have the handheld feature.
Damn, I was never so baffled by a Nintendo news like this...hopefully it will all be good in the end but I doubt it will.

I'm interested in this. Regardless of architecture though I really hope Nintendo "modernizes" and allows us to carry over our Virtual Console purchases for once. I really don't want to rebuy the games I already bought....

IF it is like eurogamer says, it's a stupid product.
So for us that want a console, why can't they release it without the screen for at least 50€ less?

This thread is hottake heaven right now

This direction makes the most sense for them right now if you think about it. I'm not quite sure how they plan to sell this thing (North America will ignore this thing while I can see Japan supporting it), but the concept itself sounds exciting to me. Having both Nintendo game lineups - console and handheld - on one system is fantastic.

One thing that scares me though is that they could design their games around portability instead of just making console games for a portable device. Less 3D Land, more Galaxy pls. Also, I hope the hardware won't be too Fisher Price toy-esque; give us a good screen that I want to play on and not like Wii U or 3DS where all is wishy washy to these HD-spoiled eyes

So yeah, exciting times if you haven't had your head in the sand for the past decade. Personally I'm interested in that thing but yeah, this will be a tough sell and they better bring it in September

Maybe the controllers can also attach in a portrait mode. This would allow them to be slightly longer.
