Makes sense to me. There is little point in competing in the set top box market at this point. Sony and Microsoft are entrenched, and even they are having issues with unit volume and PC becoming more popular.

Making the best damn handheld possible is still a market that you can break into.

Im super excited personally :)

the most shocking part here is they are going with carts and the second is the Tegra, only had bad experience with the Tegra chipsets and their shitstastic performance since the Tegra 2-4 days

still for all the shit nvidia talked about consoles and what not here we are, it is gonna be interesting how everything pans out

That's not SSJ2.

This is SSJ2:

Does anybody have a clue how big Motion Plus is? Would it be feasible to use it in the Controller Addons so you would have Motion gaming as well. Could theoretically be another Reason to have detachable Controllers.

The actual gyroscope is tiny. Also, Ubi announced Just Dance on it. Motion controls are a lock. Nintendo aren't going to make you use a cell phone like other consoles.

Best case scenario minus no BC. Quite disappointed with that. However, pretty much this is gonna be a good console for Nintendo to play to its strengths and with the death of the Vita, can probably attract the mid tier Japanese developers.

What do you mean?

They're gonna resell them all on NX, drip feeding them out as always.

Maybe we'll get another upgrade program.

It sucks I have to keep my Wii U, it's my least favorite console I've owned in terms of interface and usability.

I hope we get an upgrade program.

Remember that they were talking about an ecosystem. This could be the first device to take advantage of their handheld users and get a big userbase, fast. More powerful living-room devices could follow, that could run all your games, in higher res and framerate.

Here's the problem I have with this.

What if I want to use this thing as a console only? I have no desire to take it out into the world. What about downloading games like I do now for the Wii U? What about larger HDDs for storing larger games? I purchased a 2TB drive for my Wii U so that I wouldn't have to worry about storage at all. Will the dock allow for connecting a USB 3.0 HDD so that I can play all my downloaded games there? I definitely don't want to go back to the days of juggling stuff in and out of the fridge.

I have no interest in the handheld part of this. It will be mainly used as a console that sits under the TV. Can we connect up Wii remotes to it instead of using the controllers that disconnect from the system?

I hope Nintendo doesn't let the narrative about their new machine run wild. Can do more harm than good.

Nintendo's not giving up on 4 player local multiplayer as long as Smash and Mario Kart remain among their most reliable franchises. I would count on some form of additional controller support.

As for extra storage, it will bare minimum support SD cards based on Nintendo history. USB hard drives through the base unit are a possibility, but we'll have to wait for more info on that.

Everyone looks so excited, but... I'm afraid that it's power won't be as good the Wii U, and if it is, then... It'll be a heavy handheld...

Sounds like garbage. I have no interest in a handheld. I just want a powerful console which they are not offering. I guess it does consolidate game development to one platform. That's the only positive I see.

Super happy about the news ! Glad they decided to have one library of softwares. And since the DS I have always preferred their portable systems...
Regarding performances, the picture doesn't seem very clear right now...is it on par with wiiU or better ? It's not that I care a lot since DS and 3DS were not some monster specs systems and they are 2 of my fav systems ever :)

Really hope this is a Tegra X2.

The X1 benchmarks (in the Pixel C tablet and Shield "console") slightly better than the iPhone 6S on GPU and multicore CPU tasks, but is sub-iPhone 6 for single-core CPU tasks (and various system/memory benchmarks, but those aren't necessarily SoC related).

If this thing isn't at least a DECENT step up in visual quality over the Wii U, it's highly HIGHLY unlikely that I will buy it. I also think it will be a big mistake of them.

Tegra X1 is more powerful than the Wii U GPU. No reason to think it won't provide better visuals than Wii U.

Wait a minute. How is this a good thing?
Hybrid means inferior graphic cards, right? What's the most powerful tegra card available right now?

I'm intrigued but need to see it first. Can't see a hybrid taking off, but who knows with games like Zelda on the horizon.

I was told this would definitely not be a hybrid just a couple months ago. Jeez these rumors are toying with my expectations lol. Hopefully Nintendo does reveal this thing in the next couple of months

Sticking the other player with the gimp controller is a time honored tradition. It's like the modern day equivalent of getting that knock off PSX controller at your friend's house.

Reminds me of Megadrive micro machines where one player uses dpad for steering&brake and the other player uses the buttons, IIRC.

Wouldn't get my hopes up for X2 or any kind of chipset customisations. When it was leaked that NX would use Tegra it was suggested Nintendo took that route because Nvidia offered them a massive discount, that sounds like they're dumping existing X1 stock.

No way Breath of the Wild is going to have a comparable experience to Wii U on that thing...

...unless we're missing a pretty large piece of the puzzle here, which is possible. If the docking station increases its power then that would make some sort of sense.

lol

5 years is a long time when it comes to technological advancement. The idea that they could make a portable Wii U with a bit more juice and a lot more RAM at an affordable price isn't particularly far-fetched. It's not going to be PS4/XBO levels, but it's not hard to beat Wii U technology now.

I should be hyped but... : /

I don't care about handhelds anymore because I simply don't enjoy gaming on the go or gaming on small screens and it's pretty unfortunate that it seems Nintendo is going all out on the handheld side and making the home console side look like a joke again knowing this will be supposedly only a bit powerful than freaking Wii U and even more now with the upcoming NEO and Scorpio from Sony and MS.

I guess all those wishes I had from the NX version of Zelda: BotW being full 1080p with better textures and amplified draw distance are now dead. 720p/60 fps is what we can expect at most...

Tegra X1 Specs are actually quite decent. Not sure if Nintendo will have it made custom though.

Whats crazy is that people are calling it doom and gloom on the console end but it's the next coming of the Vita from the handheld end.

Given it's a hybrid who knows how it'll turn out. No one tried a full blown console with a hybrid setup. And the main plus is that Nintendo's teams aren't split on two platforms but working on a single one now.

It's interesting and a typical Nintendo gamble situation.

Mixed feelings about this. I think one of the biggest mistakes of the Vita was trying to do the same as a home console. People don´t want watered down versions of the games they can play at home, they want experiences tailored to a portable. Nintendo has commented on this on the past, so it´s realy strange to me that they´re pursuing the "powerful handheld" concept. It leaves them in a strange position: an expensive handheld (we all saw how that went with the 3DS) and an underpowered home console (many examples of this one). All that power makes me worry about battery life too.

Also, I think everyone was assuming NX will be a home console and I think it´s more feasible for it to be a portable, something about the way Iwata talked about it always made me think NX would be the portable half of the new Nintengo gen and the home console would come later.

I´m not convinced this is real.

On the good side it seems to have a touch screen so WE´RE GETTING SMM2 WITH A TOUCHSCREEN YESS!!!!

Nvidia has not had a game console contract since December 2004 when it was announced that Nvidia was partnering with Sony on the PS3 GPU.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_17342.html

TOKYO and SANTA CLARA, CA—DECEMBER 7, 2004—Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) and NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA) today announced that the companies have been collaborating on bringing advanced graphics technology and computer entertainment technology to SCEI’s highly anticipated next-generation computer entertainment system. Both companies are jointly developing a custom graphics processing unit (GPU) incorporating NVIDIA’s next-generation GeForce™ and SCEI’s system solutions for next-generation computer entertainment systems featuring the Cell* processor.

I read the description and was like...so this is a Windows 10 Mobile phone with continuum. I still think it's an awesome idea.

Does the NO BACKWARDS Compatibility in the OP have any weight?

Because if so, Nintendo done fucked up.

Backwards compatibility not being available has never affected a consoles launch. It might mean something to you, but to someone like me, who wants a completely new system that's not held back by previous hardware, I couldn't be happier about the news.
