Dang, that sucks. Fine for a handheld, but i'm assuming if any 3rd party games actually come out on this thing they'll be running at 720p 30fps.
There's still a chance they'll use usb-c(/thunderbolt) + eGPU. They filed a patent about it, the PC market is toying with it for laptops...

I don't really play games on mobile or portable platforms, and the concept in general doesn't really interest me, so this news is a bummer to me if it ends up being true. Still, I'm curious more than anything else.

Makes perfect sense. Their handheld market always seemed to thrive more, and now it'll have many more games coming for it. No need to split the markets.

Plus no one cares if a handheld is weaker than a console.

If you have a PS4, or an Xbone, why would you care about 3rd party support? You already have it!

So we just accepted Nintendo will never be a major player in the console market? best they can hope for is some people getting it as a second console instead of being the main one?

So why we should be happy about it again?

Some people think Tegra graphics are :

People are going to keep ignoring that Tegra is a modern chipset and supports modern day engines such as UE4. The question is battery life and the power output when hooked up to the dock.

It's true but it's going to be left behind in 2 years time after release with PS5 and maybe even Scorpio.

Scorpio? I dunno, unless MS are dicks and they let developers make games that don't run on entry level scorpio models i don't see how they couldn't port them to the NX.

Can it play Pokemon Go?

More importantly, when this gets a pokemon mainline game, will people will accept it as the "console mainline Pokemon" everybody has been asking for?

I'm using the standard Tegra X1 as a baseline since we don't know anything else, performance wise.

The final hardware should be a modified Tegra X1 or modified X2.

Exactly, thats why i say it struggle to reach XB1 Level and not simple its a tegra. Gonna be some Sub Xbox one but noooot that drastical i think

i think its gonna be Dreamcast to PS2 Gap

It's anything but smart at the moment. With how much Microsoft is still floundering this generation it could have been Their time to swoop in and come out with a bang. But instead they are going to almost concentrate on region specific market of Japanese third party deals, first party and hope UK/US really like the device like they did with Wii.

Which I don't see happening like they want it too.

MS is "floundering" because that market is firmly entrenched in the Sony and PC camps at the moment. I swear some of you sound like you just woke up after being in cryosleep since 1996. Nintendo doesn't have the cache with the market that is currently buying PS4s and gaming on PCs. Hell Microsoft actually does and, as you said, they are floundering. That day some of you have been dreaming about when 18 - 35 year old "dude bros" drop their Playstations and Xboxes because they want to play Zelda and Mario Kart and restore order to the gaming universe is never coming. I'm glad Nintendo seems to be realizing this even if you aren't.

I quite like that actually. Wonder if the screen will be 720p or 1080p.
Wish there was something like that but for PC. The GPD prototype isn't nearly as powerful.
Also, they can come out with the NX pro home console or something that's much stronger.

Oh man, I hope Super Mario Maker is on this thing.

Having that on the go would be pretty sweet.

I really hope NX offers a data plan of some sort. That'd actually get me to subscribe to a PSN / XBL style service from Nintendo.

The average enthusiast is always going to be completely out of touch with the market and assume that what they like = guaranteed success. It's hilarious.

Even if I'm not 100% sold on the concept of this on a personal level, it is absolutely the best move for Nintendo.

I feel like the biggest question mark is what version of multiplatform games the NX will be getting. Is Sonic 2017 on NX going to be a portable version (i.e. Dimps-made) of the game on XB1 and PS4? Is DQXI a port of the 3DS game or the PS4 one?

I feel like a lot of questions will be answered when we find that stuff out.

If DQXI is the PS4 version and just a slight drop in quality, I would most likely get it for the NX. That would be the case for many games since I generally only have a few hours of TV game time versus a large amount of time for handheld games. If I can walk into my den, drop this on a dock (or airplay?) and continue playing where I left off on a large TV, I would be pretty happy.

SuperMetalDave64 on suicide watch.

With that said, day1 since this is probably the most powerful portable that a company can build in any day.

Even if MS and Sony went all out they won't be able to do something better because it seems NX hit the technical limit.

I do think that their first party output is going to be beastly, which really matters in the long run. They don't have split resources anymore. The software drought should drastically decrease now, which is a really good thing. I don't care for 3rd party games since I have a gaming PC and PS4. Although, this should be powerful enough to get some ports. Obviously, it might not get the big guns like COD, but since Tegra has a modern chipset, we might be surprised.

Honestly this is what I need. Being able to play Nintendo games on one device and PC for everything else I would almost not need a PS4, minus my sports games. Please get Madden Nintendo. If nothing else get frickin Madden.

Wii and WiiU were nothing alike when it comes to 3rdParty support - weird statement.

Some people think that games beyond AAA releases dont exist. Wii had a ton of cool niche third party exclusives on top of the Guitar Heroes and Just Dances that the masses ate up. Wii U not so much.

Maybe this will help on those there is no games coming to system times. Since it's all one now. It should mean there is better stream of new Nintendo games on the system.

If you think a Nintendo home console can be succesful in 2017 I dont know what to tell you

It can if they stopped adding gimmicks. Look how much hype came from the NES re-release console coming this fall. People want it, they remember Nintendo.

Keep your message, and your console simple and people will flock to it. It's the reason Sony is doing so well. It's not complicated to wrap your head around.

Nintendo have this habbit of wanting to innovate hardware all the time, but by the time they do everything tech wise has already passed them. The Wii, DS I'll give you that were ahead of the curb. But releasing a hybrid will either sell like hot cakes depending on what it can do, or it will fizzle out.

Seems expensive. :(
It could definitely be quite expensive but I think nintendo knows not to make it too much more than the new 3ds. It depends on how good a deal they got with Nvidia which they very well might have. Tegra hasn't got any traction in any market, Nvidia NEEDED this. I think it was a hard sell and Nintendo made out like a bandit. That's the dream anyways. $260?

Vita is going to be 5 years old by the time the NX releases. Unless I am misremembering, the Vita was made so that it wouldnt be a huge loss leader even at release. Take away the fancy screen and it would have been even cheaper than it was.

Does anyone doubt that a handheld a generation more advanced than the Vita couldnt out-perform the Wii U?

Yeah, Vita is ancient technology at this point. If these rumors about the NX are true, then the NX is going to be crack for indie developers - a portable system with the full backing of Nintendo, a better install base (because let's face it, even if this bombs, a failed Nintendo portable system is going to sell way more than the Vita) and more than enough power for all but the highest-end of indie games.

Wait, remember Sonic Project 2017 will be on NX and the other consoles. Wonder if it's gonna be a direct port of the other versions or something different like Unleashed was on the Wii.

Considering the Tegra X1 is basically a furnace that happens to do processing, a handheld with a Tegra X1 *and* a 1080p display would likely have a battery life of approximately three seconds.

Is this seriously an official mockup? Almost validated this image.

Yup.

The Wii was initially planned/designed as a motion controller accessory for the GCN. The Wii U was initially planned/designed as a tablet accessory for the Wii.

The NX is a clean break, thankfully.

this isnt complicated either, you have a handheld that if you want, you can put it on a dock to play on the tv, its not fucking rocket science

This setup for the NX makes me wonder if they couldn't also sell a standalone console version similar to the PlayStation TV at a reduced cost for those that just want a home console.

So if I'm understanding the graphics comparisons correctly, Nintendo is taking a half gen leap from Wii U. That means at the end of the NX's cycle, it will be 1.5 generations behind the competition instead of 1 generation behind like it has been since Wii launched in 2006.

It's probably already been said but...all the Nintendo fanboys yelled at me that it was't a hybrid?! Take that L.

I don't know how this is going to turn out for Nintendo, its such a crapshoot nowadays with them. Personally I think this is a smart move for them. They do good with portables, they will be concentrating on one system software wise which is great from a game perspective. If its pricey that may be a problem because people won't get the idea of getting basically two pieces of hardware for one.

That's what I'm thinking. Maybe games can run up to 1080p once you hook it up to your TV.

Brilliant post - but I don't see how this will be true? Surely it will be weaker than the Wii U by a substantial margin, if output through a TV as a home-console analog?
One of the perks of low (realistic) expectations is that I'm relatively easy to please! Nintendo has hardly pushed the Wii U to its limits with most of its games, and I can't see any way that the NX isn't at least on par with that. And since most of their franchises don't go for a realistic art-style, Nintendo doesn't need a technical behemoth. They'll be fine with something (allegedly) between the Wii U and XBO, and I'm fine with that too.
