Eurogamer: NX = portable w/ carts, detachable controllers, Tegra, TV Out, no BC, Sept

Unless this thing is like $200 then it's a pass. I've always been more interested in Nintendo's handhelds then their consoles and judging by their recent console game output there isn't really anything to justify me spending more than that on their console when I could buy an Xbox One for slightly more.
If it is $200 I'd bite but probably only ever use the handheld.

That's a tablet with a battery 3x the size of an iPhone 6 or 3DS XL. I talk about a smartphone size battery, which is what we can expect from a handheld, and you give me something 3x the size. My estimation looked like it was pretty damn accurate.

I'm not sure you know what you're talking about, at all.

We will know soon enough.

Thanks guys. But...

Wut.

I don't understand. How tiny could these controllers be or how massive could the portable be to account for this?!
I don't think this will be a very portable handheld. More like a tablet. Something you'd slip in your messenger bag, backpack or purse and bring with you on the go. Not something you'd stick in your pocket, though. (Unless baggy pants come back in a big way!)

I'm guessing the controllers have motion too due to Just Dance being announced, unless it pairs with your phone.I could see motion being used for the UI and select titles.

Sure but they would be stupid to really go over 5". That's just way too big for a handheld device. Smaller tablets get away with it because they're 95% screen, they don't need to deal with thumbsticks, shoulder and face buttons. Having a 5.5-7" screen with all that extra stuff would be massive. It would just be a Wii U Gamepad, which you really can't trim down all that much without making it super uncomfortable.

How do you get two detachable/rotatable controllers with a sub-5" screen (assuming reasonable top/bottom bezels)? The NX has got to be at least mini-tablet size.

LMAO.

You know it wouldn't be that hard since all smart phones offer VR and the only thing missing are controllers.
An absolutely central point of good VR is exact positional tracking of the headset and controllers. Unless the "dock" serves double duty as a high-refresh camera -- and I hardly think that Nintendo is looking to make this thing even more expensive -- there's not going to be any VR use case for this.

Then buy digitally. I don't understand the bullshit people come up with to be upset about.

Exactly. Where did it say Nintendo wasn't allowing digital downloads for the NX?

And for people complaining about it once again being under powered, we know nothing official yet. Waaaay too premature on the doom and gloom. Tegra is already more powerful than the Wii U(if official again) and we don't know if Nintendo did any customizations to the chip or hardware(added more ram?).

September isn't far away.

When it's also a portable system? I'm ecstatic. This is the Vita 2 with a (most likely) better library of games and a built-in TV mode. I couldn't be more pleased.

I already feel like the PS4/XBO are overkill, unless you're into VR (I'm not) in which case they're not nearly powerful enough. Games like Xenoblade X & Splatoon are plenty good for my tech desires already and the idea of being able to play more impressive games than that on the go with non-touch based controls is really enticing.

Yeah, the NX isn't going to be enticing to people who don't want a portable system, but between the PS4, the XBO, and the PC scene, we really don't need another high-end home gaming platform.
That's the thing, the X1 and PS4 weren't even high-end machines when they were announced 4 years ago, and they can't even reach that on a console that launches 5 years later. You're acting like matching power with their competitors would be a bad thing.

Thanks guys. But...

Well we have one side poking out of the unit leaving internal space for the other side to fit in under the screen. I think we could have two pretty sizable full featured controllers. I don't see why we would just have this:

That doesn't make much sense.

What i dont get is why Iwata outright denied this many times
I don't have quotes on hand, but Iwata always seemed to say "I'm not saying we're making a hybrid" instead of "We're not making a hybrid." It was never as concrete as people believed. Of course if the quote proves me otherwise I apologize, haha.

Because he was definitely offering up "StreetPass" as the console name...

You folks harping on the "Go" name are focusing far too much on the momentary popularity of Pokemon Go. Come March, that game's impact will be lessened to a much, much more niche group.

The "Go" thing was proposed a looooong time ago, or at least I saw it. It's just that with pokemon go, lara croft go, hitman go, etcetc Go... The name "Go" is mroe relevant than ever and people can easily understand the concept without seeing the console. The marketing for that branding is already done.

Wait so can't phones already do everything that the nx potentially can do? They have controller add ons, TV display connectivity, etc. So is the only real benefit hardware wise the controller add ons coming in the box this time which means developers have to support buttons (lots of mobile games don't support controller add ons)

There's an additional wrinkle to the story too, albeit one we should treat with caution as it is single-source in nature with a lot of additional speculation on our part. This relates to the idea that the Tegra X1 in the NX development hardware is apparently actively cooled, with audible fan noise. With that in mind, we can't help but wonder whether X1 is the final hardware we'll see in the NX. Could it actually be a placeholder for Tegra X2? It's a new mobile processor Nvidia has in its arsenal and what's surprising about it is how little we actually know about it.

Doesn't this mean that the current dev kits are running on an overclocked X1? So, it's most likely gonna be X2 or I'm reading this wrong?

They are arrogant as fuck. Only Apple is capable of bringing new ideas and find massive sucess amd even then Apple does follow popular trends and still find massive sucesss...Nintendo?

They truly have no comprehension on how to read a market.

read a market = copy everyone

This rumor sounds fake. The controllers would look like crap and didn't Nintendo themselves call the NX a console? Also, PS4/X1 games apparently should play easily on NX. And still no talk about SCD.

960 x 540 is pushing it even for a 5" display. If the NX has a 5.5" - 7" screen (which makes the most sense given the form factor and hybrid capabilities), there's no way it could be that low resolution. 1280 x 720 would be the minimum for a reasonable resolution at that size.

(For reference, the iPad mini at 7.9" is 2048 x 1536 and $100 8" Android tablets are 1920 x 1200.)

The main function for iPad is to be a multipurpose computer for Web browsing, reading etc. 540p on a 8" us fine for games. I personally this this system will be 540p in a 7"

I hear ya.
But...JP! They love their smaller portables. This seems dangerous for that market (in terms of appeal) if so.

Crazy I guess. There's no way you can do multiplayer off just that. One side would literally have all the buttons.

It's because multiplayer, specifically first party multiplayer, is meant to be simple and easily controlled by one side having a d-pad and the other having buttons.

I don't think you understood mainly what I was saying. "People who would never read issues of a marvel comic are basically doing that by going to see each movie that is all connected in a universe". Nintendo could have the same effect with their branding of a home console that makes gamers out of people who would never have bought a console in the first place.

They are having the same effect, that's my point. The wrong way to look at the success of Pokemon Go and the buzz behind the NES Mini is to say "how can we get these people to buy a $300 console" because they don't want it and probably never will. The smart way to look at it is to see that Nintendo's IPs still carry value with people even if they don't want to buy traditional consoles, so figure out another way to monotize that base (which they are doing). It's the reason I keep vbringing up Marvel. Marvel/Disney don't care if the person buying a ticket to Avengers or the kid buying a Hulk toy ever pick up a comic book, because by selling them a movie and a toy, they are still creating a consumer. In the same way Nintendo shouldn't care if the person playing Pokemon Go or visiting their theme park or buying an NES Mini gives a shit about the NX. They are curating a diversified audience that way. The fact that you keep bringing up MS "floundering" and that being Nintendo's "in" back in the home console market just solidifies that you have a very archaic and out of touch view of the market.

It's not like portable battery life has been/is great. I get 4-5 hours out of my N3DSXL and Vita. Rarely an issue as I can't game that long on a portable due to hand and eye strain. Just sometimes a bummer when traveling across the world or something on long flights.

Hopefully they just use a standard USB charger this time so we can use power banks if needed without having to order a specialty cable.

Hope it is a hybrid.

I love Nintendo hand helds but resent buying the home consoles since they don't get the third party support.

We'd finally be able to play a powerful Pokemon game on our TVs as well. Just hope it looks sleek as it would be a shame if we had to plug something as ugly as the Wii U gamepad in to our TVs.

Exactly. Watch how and if it happens, they fail to penetrate this console/handheld hybrid market due to the massive PS4 success and blame it on something totally unrelated to the fuvk ups.

Nintendo isnt Sony. They cant read a market like Sony does and find massive success in it. Plus they dont have a powerful, recognisable brand like PlayStation to extensively help them out with "new ideas". So, I have no idea why they think the way they think as if they were in an enviable position.

Instead of pulling a Samsung and improvise the PS4 formula, powerful console with competitive pricing and awesome third party support, they go the other way around with ideas that never take off (bar Wii) hoping it sticks and loose so much in the proces.

They are arrogant as fuck. Only Apple is capable of bringing new ideas and find massive sucess amd even then Apple does follow popular trends and still find massive sucesss...Nintendo?

If Nintendo made a "PS4" it would be their death sentence. Xbone is already having a hard enough time as it is. Nintendo read "that" market, and they wisely want no part of it.

Why would someone buy a device to play games their phone already plays?
That's not what I'm saying. Yes, there'll be phone ports, but what I'm saying is that there will be a decent amount of experienced developers ready to make games that take advantage of the system's strengths, like physical controls.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
The Pascal chip other than potentially being that shit shown off in their Android Auto presentation at CES has yet to be unveiled.

I'd hold off on concrete arguing over stuff like heat and battery life until we know the final chip. The X1 has its own set of issues in this regard, but I don't want to project anything from that on the next chipset which is basically a full redesign on a new node.

Look at it this way: Nintendo will be the only dedicated handheld on the market.

There are two consoles by other companies for big console like experiences, and Nintendo is really going to be the only option in the industry for portable experiences that pack a decent graphical punch and traditional non-touchscreen controls.

Basically, they are the bastion of handheld gaming going forward.

Ahhh, I completely get what you are saying. Then the controllers would also function as a sort of "grip". They could also completely go behind the screen for portability.
