Serious question -- why is this classified as a 'hybrid' and not just a 'portable with tv out'.

I mean, I could hook my PSP up to the tv,and it was still a handheld. If the vita had a tv out, would it be a hybrid? What is the PSTV? A console since it requires a tv, or a hybrid since it's a vita?

Conceptually, I -love- the idea of a true hybrid. I wish my vita had a tv out from the get go. However, I don't like the idea of detachable controllers.

I'd much rather the 'portable' form was ergonomically designed for the best handheld control configuration, and rather than detaching them to play on TV, you simply bought a secondary controller and synched it.

It is a portable with a TV out and detachable controllers. Call it a "Transforner"

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
Also, what's the point behind cartilage? Does it really have any advantages nowadays as it used to?

As far as I know, still provides much needed cushioning and support for bones and joints, etc. But I'm not a doctor.

This is exactly the value problem I was talking about. Who is going to see this as a home console where you can sell higher priced games? Making everyone think of it as a true hybrid where both handheld priced games and console priced games is going to be a huge task for Nintendo.

Nintendo was never going to compete for the bro gamer set ever again. So I love this. Blue ocean strategy again. Cater to the family crowd. Cater to the larger majority of gamers that want to be able to pick up and play quickly. And maybe, just maybe, reinvent the whole damn wheel in the process.

Also, home consoles don't sell in Japan anymore. So this helps things there.

Bring it on Nintendo. Start the next revolution in gaming

Awesome! Just tinkered with a New 3DS to recreate it as that's what I was sort of envisioning too:

Fd8O5SO.jpg

So when the two controllers come off the back, one has buttons on the left side that that other has on the right side? Or its two sticks side by side and two sets of buttons? Or...both are mega tiny controllers?

Thank you for the mock-up!

(Sorry about my mix-up, Orioto!)

This is why I'm interested to see how they actually go about marketing this thing. It's either a portable that hooks up to your TV, a console you can take on the go, or a true attempt at a hybrid, and there's different implications for each choice.

...folks...this is the gimmick.....

I doubt it.

Under that proposal, the idea is that the handheld is just sold as a handheld, and the dock and TV experience is a separate cost. Not that the whole SKU includes that from the start.

It's going to be a glorified cradle with an HDMI out port. There's a high amount of latency involved in using a hypothetical external GPU. If it sells well, you might see companies take advantage of this, but a high cost ($100-200) would disincentivize sales.

I think a handheld with home console price is pretty stupid.

You'd be paying for a handheld with stronger hardware.

Honestly, as just a portable, I would be okay with this.

As a hybrid, we'll see, but it seems more powerful than the Wii U which is good for Zelda I guess.

I wonder what resolution the handheld screen would be, hopefully not too high-res to save battery.

...Instead of pulling a Samsung and improvise the PS4 formula, powerful console with competitive pricing and awesome third party support, they go the other way around with ideas that never take off (bar Wii) hoping it sticks and loose so much in the proces.

They truly have no comprehension on how to read a market.

Like this'll all happens at the snap of a finger...

After all this time, you guys still don't see that Nintendo's third-party situation can't simply be fixed by having powerful hardware(which will some how be magically priced to our liking?). Comments like those are every bit as cluless/delusional as you all are claiming Nintendo to be.

What I'm seeing here; is a an opportunity to leverage their handheld popularity and build a stronger console brand for the - likely near - future. That's a much better way to achieve the outcome you are currently wishing for, rather than going all-in at a table where no one even cares to play.

Nah, I think they're just reacting to market norms that are almost a decade old at this point.

People simply don't use physical media for portable devices anymore. Period.

The idea of carrying a cashe of cartridges around in 2016 just sounds...antiquated.

I'm confused, do people think digital downloads won't also be an option or something?

Literally a system that is both a home console and a portable, and just because something can connect to a tv doesn't make it a home console. This is a handheld with tv connectivity, not really a full blown hybrid that replaces both the wii u and 3ds. This is the 3ds successor. Imo nintendo will have another home console, just not until late 2017 or more likely sometime in 2018 or so. The tv connectivity is just a stop gap in the space. They are conceding the home console generation to sony until they feel this gen is basically over. Neo isn't really a next gen system, just a reassertion of sonys dominance this gen. Maybe they will say something about next home console as scorpio release gets closer, or shortly after scorpio release.
I'm slowly skipping around the thread from the beginning, and I just wanted to highlight this post. I think it's really solid conjecture.

Exactly. This is why I have a hard time believing this because it completely goes against what has already been laid out. It doesn't add up, and no "credible" website is going to convince me otherwise.

I thought that Iwata quote was more recent, somehow, but it's actually from all the way back in January 2013. Is there a more recent point where he or Kimishima said something similar?

If not, it's entirely possible that the original plan was for separate devices and that plans changed somewhere along the line.

I know power isn't the main thing, but to be honest, this thing needs 3 things.

*An external GPU in the TV dock: It needs to be on par with at least the PS4Neo IMO

*An actual controller. - I'm really worried that the controls are gonna be like wii motes where you have to hold each control stick to play

*It needs to be easy to develop for. - Simple, easy. Does anyone know or have an idea on how easy this might be?

I'm also interested in the name, wonder what that'll be.

inb4 Portable Entertainment System. PNES

On par with PS4Neo why? That's an unrealistic expectation and seems like you haven't read any of this thread.

Sounds like basura.

I don't really game on dedicated handhelds anymore. In the rare times I do, it's usually at home anyway. So now I'm stuck with a handheld that isn't quite a handheld, and isn't quite a powerful console. Why are they trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist? Were people dying to connect their handhelds to the screen? Did people really want console experiences on the go with them?

The Vita tried both and failed. It was proof that people don't necessarily need or want that. Unless there's a hidden gpu in that base station, trash confirmed. I would love to be wrong.

I just want a console that at least reaches the power of the X1, and play a 3D Mario on THAT. It seems more and more like a pipedream.

This. So dissapointed so far if this ends up being true wich it seem like it : / I appreciate Nintendo's effort on always bring something new to the table but this new concept seems a bit unnecesary IMO.

mckmas8808

Mckmaster uses MasterCard to buy Slave drives
Prediction: Nintendo is going to use a custom Chip based on the Tegra X, not just a simple X1 or X2. And the docking is going to have another GPU, the handheld alone is around 300-400Gflops, whit the docking 1-1.5 Tflops. ;)

And how much will this all cost?

Since it's described as having a dock/base station instead of just an HDMI out, or coming with a streaming dongle etc. people are speculating that graphics will get a boost when it's in the dock/base station. I.e. Games play at whatever resolution on the hand held, maybe 30FPS etc. and get bumped to 1080p/60fps on the big screen when docked. Or maybe like going from a PC game on Low to Medium etc.

But it's all just speculation currently.

Why couldn't they have come in with a clean slate? XBox is doing bad because the company fucked up, and over the course of a decade didn't make any big changes or partnerships for games outside certain regions. Also they marketed their product to be more of A US/UK device. Nintendo is universal brand that just needs to have a clear message. PS3 fucked up and took them a whole generation to really get back on track, but even then they had issues with online, architecture, and piss poor documentation from japan.

They refocused, gave control to their american branch to work with Japan, and the result is PS4.

Blackberry is another xbox, they fucked up and didn't capitailze on changes in the market. WHich is on them, same with microsoft and same with nintendo.

Again, the mistake you seem to be making seeing what the NX might be, what Pokemon Go is, what their mobile stuff is, what the NES Classic is, what their recent theme park and movie deals are and not seeing "refocus". If you can't see some pretty big changes to the way Nintendo is going about business compared to, say, 4-5 years ago, I don't know what to tell you. This is why I keep talking about people having narrow views of this stuff. Just because they aren't doing it exactly like Sony, or exactly like a "traditional console company" should or has done for the last 20 years, you can't understand why it could be successful. There's more than one blueprint to success.

If this ends up being essentially Nintendos whole dev teams making traditional games for a high powered handheld device I am in.

Just launch with a 3D Mario and don't be fucking region locked.

Will be disappointed if the handheld is just a tablet with no buttons

I think I get it though. Its what the gamepad tried and failed to be. A hybrid tablet gaming machine

Actually it should be more like this for comfort both in solo and detached modes.

This way both players could have the rounded edges in their palms when holding them. As well it's a more comfortable position when using it with the screen.

It does need more room on the sides though. Having the thumbstick and buttons perfectly aligned is uncomfortable. The top buttons and thumbstick should be 1/4-1/2 an inch further out.

Hmm.. On the one hand Tegra is pretty powerful for a portable.

On the other hand Tegra is super weak for a home console.

Lol I literally just called this in a different thread

I'm interested, hopefully there's a model without the "ripping controllers off the screen" method of controls. I really just want a console

Maybe this thing will be worth lugging around though: I honestly loved the idea of the gamepad and I felt like it was comfortable

Digital games with this console is going to be so nice. Truly getting the benefits of handheld and consoles together. No need carrying around multiple cartridges for games yet still portable AND still playable on the big screen???!! This console has the potential to be amazing....

I'm in love with the idea of the casual multiplayer experiences this will offer.
Yes, smartphones have encroached heavily on the portable gaming market, but their local multiplayer offerings leave something to be desired. This could absolutely fill this niche, and being able to so easily share the experience with friends will make this spread like wildfire

That wasn't the question.

There actually was no question, but if you are wondering why include an option to purchase cartridges, it's because many people still prefer to buy physical media and it hurts nobody to have the option available.

Why sell disks for PS4 games, etc.?

Not pleased about this at all. I do not care to play any serious immersive game like a Metroid Prime on a handheld. Nintendo has perverted their 'quality over quantity' philosophy by combining, quantizising, and mediocritizing their console with a handheld. I know it's hard for them to accept that the handheld market is now the cellphone, but it shouldn't be hard for them to realize they needed cutting-edge technology to make better console games than Sony and Microsoft.

No one wants to game on a handheld thats not a phone Nintendo...

If that were the case 3DS wouldn't be the thing propping up their business. There'll still be a reliable market among gamers too young for phones and people here in Asia's train commute-heavy culture.

If the two controllers snap off the side of the tablet and can snap together the same way to form a controller on its own, holy fuck. I'm so in. Nintendo, I'm ready.

That would be one small, weird ergonomic controller. I hope they have a Pro controller, because the thought ot using DS level controllers on a TV sounds like the stuff of nightmares

Can people stop claiming "they called this?". Sure a million people posited the lazy "oh it will be a hand held with an HDMI out, but this is some other monstrosity so far. It has a dock, it has detachable end controllers..
