I've enjoyed off tv play on the WiiU more than I thought I would. So we'll see how this goes.

However, I'm definitely going to wait longer for a purchase, unless Bayonetta 3 comes out close to it.

To all these people who want a 1080 screen on a portable...what would be the point? Your eyes couldn't resolve the difference anyway. And most people couldn't see the benefits of 720 either.

Sounds like a cool idea we heard about many months ago. I look forward to seeing what it can do, but am not really in the market for a weak ass console. I hope it is not too bad.

Man, if I can spot the difference on a 4-5 inch phone, I'm sure as hell going to notice it here. Everyone will, 1080p is standard on phones and to not go HD, people won't be able to exactly say why, but they'll notice it.

ehhh.

It'll probably have good exclusives eventually so I'll wind up with one at some point. And a handheld with TV-Out is waaaaaaaaay better than one without.

So is the dock just a dock or is it going to have its' own components as well?

Chances are it's not going to include actual "processing" parts, at least in the first iteration - this may come later on. The relatively sane scenario where it helps is upping the clock.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
:/ Really..? Even with Tegra X1 technology..? I mean The Shield is pretty small after all..don't Nvidia kinda promote it having around 500gflops or so?

Well i guess atleast it'll be stronger than the Wii U in any case....maybe around the same as the shield?

Shield TV uses a fuck ton more watts than the handheld would.

That being said I'll say it again.

Don't go looking for hard numbers yet until we have actual chipset details.

There is virtually a 0% chance the chipset in this will be like the current X1 chips. It'll be a custom design for the system even if it's based on the X1 let alone the X2 which is a total chip redesign.

So I wouldn't go fishing through current anandtech benchies to get any real info on the NX.

Why I think this will succeed with mass-market:
+ Nintendo are combining their console and handheld markets into one. All their games output (minus mobile?) will be on this single platform. No fragmentation.

Why I don't think this will succeed with mass-market:
- Dedicated handheld gaming hardware caps at teenagers or people who play in bed/camping.
- Nintendo are competing with themselves (and against everyone else) by having mobile phone games out there.
- Severely underpowered as a TV-console (PS4K and eventually Scorpio are order-of-magnitude stronger)
- The big 3rd party multiplatform games will not show up.

Why does it appeal to me:
+ Zelda BOTW looks Nintendo's strongest game quality-wise in ten years.
+ Very appealing as a secondary console (and camper/bedside handheld) with all of Nintendo's output to be found on a single piece hardware. No direct overlap with PS4/PC.

Why doesn't it appeal to me:
- I just wanted sharp and clean 1080p graphics for Nintendo IP. It's really hard to go back... really hoping that dock comes with extra hardware.

Conclusion:
If this has all of Nintendo's mobile phone games in addition to having extra GPU-power within docking-station then they have a desirable platform. Otherwise I think there's too many omissions.

Agree and agree. Hopefully, it scales when you plug into the TV or whatever

If the portable has a 720p screen that would be pretty good, not buying the "hook it to a dock to increase performance" mechanism though, I hope it's two separate devices.
My spring 2016 phone is 4k.
How long does the battery last if you play a medium polygonal setting game for an hour?

If NX is indeed what is being shown here, then what the hell is MH?

It was a hypothetical scenario, not a real thing.

There's quite a few details they don't seem to know.

I missed the part where they reported the launch games, OS, system storage, etc.

Well considering it would need a GPU, and they seem to have gotten this info from people who has dev kits, I think this would be on the table on this report.

This thing has to be under $200 and profitable. Nintendo knows it. Thus majority of the theories and wishful thinking in this thread is nuts. Also no way Nintendo wants to develop two versions of every game IMO.

Of course shit goes down while I was taking a nap. Either way, I decided to let the idea sink in my head & write down every single thought I may have. Depending on how fast this thread grows, I may do another list later if more potential scenarios pop up in my head. So, here goes...

Pros
  • Obviously the idea that you can take your NX on the go then dock it later.
  • Nintendo can focus on just one platform for all of their games. Looks like Game Freak has to move on to console Pokémon games.....kinda.
  • Nintendo's use of cartridges pretty much ensures that there will be minimal load times & next to no installs.
  • The console dock & the SCD have the potential to boost the NX's power when at home.
  • Nintendo could have the potential to release an overclocked home console-only version later down the road that plays the same games (just with better performance).
  • At least for at-home use, Nintendo's kinda bringing back the split-controller lay-out introduced by the Wii Remote & Nunchuck. This would be nice if you're just laid out on the couch. Hopefully both controller halves have gyro controls & maybe an IR blaster (for Splatoon use).
  • If this thing has a GPS & a back-facing camera on it, you could easily put Pokémon GO on this thing. Likewise, all of Nintendo's mobile games could carry over to the NX.
Cons/Concerns
  • Obviously, it's weaker than even the Xbox One & not a big step up from the Wii U, but I'm hoping that, as mentioned in the pros, the console dock &/or the SCD can fix that (since battery life won't be an issue).
  • This doesn't really line up with what the insiders of GAF have mentioned (the NX having no issue running PS4/XB1 games, its CPU actually being above the next-gen twins, etc.). Would this mean that the 2017 Sonic game would have a dedicated NX version like the 3DS had his own version of Generations, & would this mean that NX would get the 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI? But again, if the dock can boost the NX's power to at least XB1 levels, then this would be a non-issue.
  • This also conflicts with what we've heard from Nintendo, specifically Iwata before his death. Now granted, perhaps Kimishima employed these changes after Iwata's unfortunate death, but I doubt that he could change the concept of the NX so drastically between Iwata's passing & now. Then again, Iwata could have lied from the beginning.
  • This may be seen as Nintendo bowing out of the console market.
  • Local multiplayer might get a bit awkward. If this thing is priced at around $200-300, having each person in the house getting an NX would be a bit costly. One would hope that you can get those detachable controllers separately to enable couch multiplayer without it costing you an arm & a leg.
  • If this is the only NX SKU, one would hope that the screen would at least be at 720p. But then again, Matt did hint at something lower than 720p (possibly 540p). Hopefully the console dock &/or the SCD can up the native resolution if the handheld's screen turns out to be around 540p.
  • The potential for touchscreen inputs would end up being limited thanks to the NX needing to be docked for at-home use. Then again, if the controller parts have IR blasters (or at least one of them), that could mimic a touchscreen, but it would still limit the potential for DS Virtual Console games to carry over.
  • I fear for the possibility that this may not have an ethernet adapter. Granted, it's not unusual for Nintendo, but it would be a shame for this feature to be missing three times in a row (console dock pls).
  • Also, this system's potential as a competitive Smash machine would also be hampered by the possibility of no true wired controller, or at least support of the GameCube Adapter. Granted, there's still the Wii U version, but then there's the concern of competitive players getting screwed over if the NX version has extra characters or stages (again, console dock pls).
Either way, if this turns out to be true, I look forward to Nintendo's official unveiling of the NX. Hopefully it'll shed some light on the new System.

tl;dr it's a hybrid

Come on..1080 may not be needed but 720 is absolutely needed. Nobody wants a cnsole doing worse resolution than cell phone in 2017.

Why are you so up in arms against physical media? Some people will opt to buy huge ass SD cards for digital games, and some will opt to go with carts. Many will do both. This is a really strange thing to pontificate on.

I was describing market realities when questioned how anyone could dare scoff at carrying around the equivalent of cassette tapes, CDs and game carts for their portable devices in 2016. Nothing more, nothing less.

Didn't weigh in on my own personal take either way. I think I even mentioned that carts will be just fine for many gamers.

What if the SCD locks into the Dock. Kind of like a ram pack, with iterations released every 2-3 years or so. This ensures a long lifespan for the system.

Right now, I am thinking that the docking station will be "dumb" and just for tv out, ports, etc.

On cooling: What about something like those laptop cooling pads? I've never actually used one and have heard mixed reviews, but those are not official parts specially made to work w/ a specific device like this would be.

Because the RnD would be dirt cheap.

Not that I am agreeing with the previous poster's point.

The PS4 and XB1 were not cheap to develop. Nintendo is in a similar boat, staring at an architecture change and an inability to reuse any of their old tech. It would have been expensive either way.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
Technically isn't Tegra beyond the CPU in Xbone?
Per core - yes, but xbone has 8 of those (6 available to devs), whereas TX1 has big.LITTLE 4xA57 + 4x A53. The latter being unbeatable where it comes to 64-bit power efficiency.

'Last gen' experiences like GTAV, MGSV, Destiny....?

I hope this is sarcasm because I can't see this being possible on the NX with the currently revealed information. Even if they say "between WiiU and Xbox One power" I still don't see it playing those titles.

If the Nintendo NX is really a handheld which is supposed to be a system with which you're able to play all videogames on the go, how would this be work with multiplayer online games? In my opinion it would be a must have to have the ability to be online wherever you are and this can only be done if you could use a phone sim card right? Will Nintendo include a sim card holder to archive this functionality?

Or you can only play online where there's wifi.

You know, like the 3DS.

If we're talking about a ~5" screen, would 1080p be nice to have? Sure.

Would it be worth the additional cost and power consumption over a 720p screen? Probably not.

So weaker than a 360 then?
Because a 360 plays those titles.

I mentioned this on an earlier page in this thread. If they could create a good enough seal through vents on the bottom of the handheld, they could draw enough heat out do dissipate 20W with a fairly low RPM fan.

So it won't be able to play those games but it'll be able to play the new Zelda without a problem?

All of those were playable on the 360 which is 12 year old tech as of next year.

Not interested in anything "portable" no matter how much awesomeness more powerful it is compared to a 3DS/Vita, WiiU.

I'm looking for a home console on par with XB1/PS4 (that ofc plays Nintendo games).

Even if not a true home console, it still has the option to go portable or dock to your tv at home. Buy separate docks and you can travel from room to room I imagine. Can't do that with a PS4 or Xbox One so it has a unique advantage there.
Really hope this gets Nintendo back on their feet. I for one am excited. Lets just hope the controls are not a bummer/letdown.
