CHICAGO (WLS) -- A home surveillance camera captured an intruder inside a Chicago couple's home watching them as they slept.

Jack Mackercher and his girlfriend, Jordan Buranskas, didn't realize that a man had been lurking around their Bucktown neighborhood home in the middle of the night until they noticed that Buranskas' purse was missing. Monday evening, the couple retraced their steps by scrolling through video recorded by one of Mackercher's surveillance cameras.

They rewinded to 3:30 a.m. Monday. What they saw terrified them.

"I'm like, 'Why are you at the top of the stairs wearing a white hoodie before we went to bed?' She's like, 'I wasn't at the top of the stairs.' So that's when you go flush and start to freak out a little bit," Mackercher said.

An intruder had crept in through an unlocked door. And for several minutes, hovered over the couple, who had fallen asleep on the couch. The suspect moved so slowly and quietly, he didn't disturb the couple's two dogs, sleeping at their feet.

"He stood there for about 5 minutes the first time then walked away, then came back and hovered over us again for another 5 minutes," Buranskas said.

The thief has been nicknamed the "Creeper Ghost," and is believed to be responsible for other neighborhood burglaries.

well at least he didnt murder them in their sleep
so hes not all bad
I mean he might still be working up to that but ya

I think this is less him being a weird creeper and more not knowing WTF he should do having not anticipated this.

nah man

After that happened I would probably start identifying with those guys who litter their houses with man traps a lot more.

There would be a thousand locks on my doors and windows the next day. Jesus.
A decent security system should of set off alarms the second they guy tried to get in upstairs so either they don't have a security system (or it's a piece of shit) or forgot to turn it on.

If i reviewed my tapes and found this i go out the next day and get a fucking panic room installed and sleep it.

Okay at first I thought maybe he didn't realize anyone was home and was being very cautious in just getting what he came for and leaving.

But then he came back around.

But he came back and stood there for another 5 minutes.

But there's also a bunch of other robberies he's committed. I mean I guess he could just be really into watching people sleep for 10 minutes, but it doesn't really fit. Why steal anything at all if the voyeurism is his goal?

That second 5 minutes could have been because he thought he woke someone or one of the dogs and was again trying to figure things out.

That's some useless dogs.

Seriously. My dog would bark if someone came within 10 feet of the door. I used to open it before friends knocked because I could tell someone was coming when he perked up and investigated.

Those dogs were slacking.
