2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Before I bite the bullet, is the XPS15 a good buy right now in that price bracket?

This is the one I am leaning towards
http://www.dell.com/ca/p/xps-15-9550-laptop/pd?oc=nxps15550_bt_b1633e&model_id=xps-15-9550-laptop

6th Generation Intel Core i5-6300HQ Quad Core (6M Cache, up to 3.2 GHz)
8GB DDR4-2133MHz;
1TB 5400RPM Hard Drive + 32GB Solid State Drive
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 960M with 2GB GDDR5
15.6" 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) InfinityEdge touch

As i noted on the previous page it appears you cant configure these. Ideally i would like 4k non-touch screen and a bigger SSD but there is no option. I figure I can buy a bigger SSD in the future.

Before tax it is $1800CAD so $1385USD

So how's my new Acer Predator 15?

Good so far! I managed to recover like 99% of my old laptop's data by removing the HDDsa nd copy/cutting and pasting them into my new laptop.
So far so good.

Right now I'm trying to figure out why Input Mapper is borked for me, but otherwise...yo this is a slick laptop, AND comes with a detachable BR drive which I can replace with a fan!

Only major gripe is that on boot up the dang thing plays a music clip which I'd rather it didn't.

So this is going to be just too late probably for me to get one by 10th of August. Damn.

Unfortunately, yeah. Looks like the first laptops are shipping mid-to-late August.

Almost there, stay strong. Good news is, Pascal lives up to the hype, so your patience will be greatly rewarded.

You sure that 1TB HDD + 32GB SSD isn't referring to one single SSHD hybrid drive?

I'm shifting back and forth between a msi gt72 dominater pro or alienware 17 r3 or asus rog g751jy.

I'm looking for enough power to run games for the next 2-4 years so something with a nvidia 980, budget is around $2000 (obviously if I can pay less then great). I don't need the most powerful thing on earth but I won't be able shift to a desktop like I originally planned for at least a few more years so in the meantime I need a laptop that can keep up.

Can anyone recommend one of those three over the others? Or something else I should have looked at?

WAIT FOR PASCAL [1080m at least] which should launch by the end of August!

I think for those 3 laptops Reliability is like Alienware>MSI>>>Asus

But that's just the feeling I get. All 3 companies are supposed to be pretty reliable right now

For power which is important in a laptop to last 3-4 years, the models currently rank like the following:

  1. MSI GT72s Dominator Pro -> Max GPU: GTX 980M 8GB* [1, 2]
  2. Alienware 17 r3 -> Max GPU: GTX 980M 8GB [1]
  3. Asus G751JY -> Max GPU: GTX 980M 4GB [1,2]

*There's technically a variant of the MSI GT72S Dominator Pro series that is available with a GTX 980 mobile version which is currently the single fastest card available but it's well over $2000. Essentially Alienware and MSI are tied in that model at that price point with the ASUS having the same power but half the vram

However again

WAIT FOR PASCAL [1080m at least] which should launch by the end of August!

Also Alienware seems notably more expensive. The MSI GT72 I linked has the i7-6820HK CPU and 8GB GTX 980M GPU for $1940 whereas Alienware has a similar laptop for $2300

Thanks for the advice! Unfortunately I might not be able to wait till mid august for Pascal. I live overseas and all laptops where I am cost several hundred more than in the US, where I am currently on vacation. I leave early August so I'd have to get one before then.
For instance a rog with a 970 is $2500.
I'll compare some more prices and see though, thanks again!

I have no idea the veracity of the source chinese website but supposedly there is a leaked GPU-Z screenshot of the 1070m released today

English site discussing Chinese leak

Original Chinese leak site

States something about the 1070m being slightly different relative to the 1070 than the 1060 relationship

For starters, a screenshot provided by BenchLife shows that the mobile version of the GTX 1070 will have 2,048 CUDA cores, which is 128 more than the desktop version. There are also 64 Render Output Units, 170 Texture Memory Units, a pixel fill rate of 92.4 gigapixels per second, and a texture fill rate of 245.3 gigatexels per second. The chip is backed by 8GB of GDDR5 memory from Samsung, a 256-bit bus width, and a memory bandwidth of 256.3GB per second.

As for the mobile GTX 1070 chip, the CUDA count is higher, as previously stated, but the clock speeds are lower, as the desktop version has a base clock of 1,506MHz, and a boost clock of 1,683MHz.

Of the two examples, the GTX 1070 is the most altered component with the added cores and reduced clock speeds, but otherwise the difference isn’t that far off…. if the GPU-Z screenshots are indeed authentic.

There's another comment in the chinese article which I thought was interesting if true

However, the flagship of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 seems to be the Gaming Notebook MSI exclusive let after occupy some time, will be released for other NVIDIA partners

Which sounds like they're trying to say the mobile 1080 will release in MSI laptops first and other manufacturers laptops at a later point

Wow if this happens, total bullshit.

Hi guys,

just ordered this laptop for 780€

ASUS GL552VW-DM141
15.6" FullHD
Intel Core i7-6700HQ
8 GB DDR4
1TB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX960M 2GB

Will it be enough to run most of the games @1080p with medium-high settings? what about emulators such as dolphin and pcsx2?

Wow if this happens, total bullshit.

Well there are a couple manufactuers who are a bit later to the party I think but this if true would delay the sager/clevo and Asus 1080m laptops which is dumb.

Again random chinese website rumor though

Trying to decide between a Asus GL552VW (with 4GB of VRAM) and an Alienware 15".

Which of these would offer greater long term reliability?

Both companies are supposed to be pretty reliable this days although I think the edge goes to Alienware?

If I'm reading the Alienware page right then you'd be getting at minimum a 2GB 965m GPU?

The Asus GL552VW page I saw had a 2GB 960m. Even if the variant you are looking at has a 4GB 960m, it might be worth looking at the alienware as the 965m is around 40% more powerful. Half the vram can be an issue if you play a lot of open world games though

X05

Upside, inside out he's livin la vida loca, He'll push and pull you down, livin la vida loca
Speaking of, who's generally considered reliable and/or as having good quality control these days? It used to be that ASUS and Lenovo were pretty good back in the day (minus the bloatware), but they've fallen from grace big time apparently.

HP and Acer used to suck at reliability and durability. Is it still true?

What about MSI?

Dell and Razer seem pretty good, but even isn't exempt from hardware issues.
Dell and HP are good if you are looking at least at their upper-mid tier stuff, or if you get the more expensive warranties. Their cheaper offerings can be a lovely dose of pain suffering.

Not a gaming question, but are there any nice Bluetooth mice - ideally Logitech as I like the feel of their clicky scroll wheel. I'm getting a MacBook Pro for work and I could use the little nano receiver but would prefer to keep the edges clean so I don't put pressure on them when it's in my bag etc.

BT keyboard recommendations welcome too. I have a couple of Logitech k750s we use at home that I like, but they need the dongle.
Most Logitech wireless mice have a slot for you to place the receiver when you are not using it so it doesn't get lost. Honestly unless you are port starved I'd just use the receiver.
I have a 2009 MBP with only 2 USB ports and still prefer to use the receiver

Interesting, thanks for the tip. I guess the touch one is the better purchase if I can upgrade the ssd.
Not sure which version you are looking at, but mind that if you get the one with the larger battery, you won't have space for a SATA disk.

Trying to decide between a Asus GL552VW (with 4GB of VRAM) and an Alienware 15".

Which of these would offer greater long term reliability?
The Alienware, definitely. It even has support for external GPUs.
And the reviews I have seen for that Asus haven't been nice, to say the least.

One thing people need to understand:

GTX 1080 = GTX 980 successor
GTX 1070 = GTX 980M successor
GTX 1060 = GTX 970M successor
GTX 1050 = GTX 960M successor

They'll be priced accordingly. MSI having a 1080 deal won't matter to anyone, except those who are looking to spend $3k or more.

I know little to nothing about Firewire.

Sorry for asking this again but whoch of these would you recommend? I want one that has compratment for an ex hdd since inhave one always connected cuz it holds some of my steam games

Comes down to aesthetic preference I guess.

Yes. Yes.

Razer Core has Linus excited; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZSMcKbuEnA

Got old graphic card laying around? put it inside a razer core, take the core with you to some place where you spend a lot of time, but is removed from your stationary computer. give desktop graphics to your laptop. It's a brilliant idea.

It has some rough edges. Fans are too loud, the product is just too expensive for what it is. 400 dollars for a PCI-E Dock, with USBC and TB3? I mean. It looks really impressive, but man is that a bunch of money. Software imaturity is another problem, and a big cavat; Obviously one would need Thunderbolt 3 on a laptop for it to work.

But still. This tech is exciting.

Imagine being a developer, editor, modeller, or just a gamer going somewhere or spending a lot of time somewhere else, where you will be using your laptop a lot, but not in a position to bring a desktop with you. Furthermore, there is something great about getting a second life out of your older graphics card. Upgraded to a new GTX 1080 in your desktop?
Well, call me susan and stick that old GPU in it then. Reducing load on the dGPU inside your laptop increases its lifespan too, and allows your CPU to run more efficently by not having to downclock. Perhaps at all. Plus you get a reduction in noise, as gaming laptops can be insanely loud.
It might take 1-2 years more, but once we start seeing bugs for this being ironed out, I think it will be an excellent product.

Improvements I would like to see?
If you already 4 USB3, Gigabit, HDMI, it seems like it has everything a dock would need. However, since TB can transfer at such speeds, I'd also like to see (if room allowed it), a 2,5' SSD/HDD bay, allowing you to also add an external drive.
Then you could put in a 2TB SSHD drive inside the core, and every time you plugged in the core to your laptop, an external drive pops up with 2TB of all your media, editing footage, games and whatever. Would kill the need for having as many external drives with you, and if you ran around with a light laptop with limited SSD storage, having it loaded to the brim with steam games and such might not be an option.

At the same time, the Cores compact size is a major boon. Giving you that amount of power in that footprint. It's flat out irresponsible. Sadistic even.

So, since i still didn't pull the trigger on that GL752VW i was eyeing a couple months ago, should I wait for new gpu's ?

Also, is there anything better than the above mentioned
ROG GL752VW (i76700HQ-16GB DDR4-128GB SSD-1TB HDD-GTX 960M)
i can buy for 1000€ ?

I won't be using it for gaming actually, mostly video editing / motion graphics and i need 17".

Yeah, I'm really excited for the tech to mature so it gets cheaper and is compatible with a wide array of computers. Right now the Razer Core only works consistently with a Razer laptop I think. Try that on a Dell with TB3, and it won't work, or be unstable at best. There just aren't any drivers for it to work.

But I'll essentially ditch my desktop once the tech is there. I'd rather have a lightweight silent laptop with a compact GPU.

Looking to buy a new laptop nothing too crazy. I'm not planning on using it to play the latest games or last gen games. Mostly i want to use this laptop for emulation of ps2/gamecube games etc. What I am looking for in a laptop is that it can run games at 1080p with no problem. One of the main thing i am looking for is a quiet laptop, i want to run the games without it going crazy, my current laptop is a samsung np550p5c which i really like. It can run ps2 games at basic settings at full speed and doesn't overheat or the fan does not go crazy.

Previously I had a HP laptop which was terrible, if i loaded up a flash video or anything the fan of the laptop would get really loud and the laptop would overheat, which made the laptop very uncomfortable to use. So I want to avoid a laptop like that my budget is £700.

Tldr, just looking at for a laptop that can emulate games at 1080p with ease, don't want a laptop that needs to be pushed to its limit to do so and that it is quiet.

Looking for a pretty thin/light laptop
Like sub 14 inches
Gaming would be nice but not needed to be maxed
The razor blade stealth seem like what I'm looking for (good CPU,SSD, decent amount of ram) but a GPU wouldn't hurt
However the most important factor is weight/size
Budget is 1000 (could be more if you find me a winner)
Thanks

Alright. So I need immediate help here as circumstances dictate that I get a Laptop on super short notice with 1 day shipping -

I don't want to spend a ton, but I want to get a Laptop with at least a 120hz screen that can play Overwatch at a steady 120 FPS. What's my best bang for the buck?

After having apple MacBooks for 3-5 years, it was time to go back to a windows laptop due to numerous reason (upcoming courses at college, eyesight, etc).

So, with my company discount they have with Dell, I picked up a Dell XPS 15 with the following:

6 Gen Core I7 -6700HQ
84Whr 6-Cell Battery
16GB DDR 4 RAM
512GB PCIe Solid State Drive
Nvida GeForce GTX 960M 2GB
Screen is 1920x1080FHD

Reason for the lower res screen is that I find them much easier for me to look at the screen than the Higher res screens (retina) and Windows wasn't working well with my eyes with boot camp.

But it's going to be awesome to play a bunch of the great games I can't play on Mac but easily can with windows and having Xbox functionality is going be great.

I paid about 1956 CAD after my work discount and it's a bonus that they also have a computer loan plan so they just take a bit off every pay, which is a lot nicer since the interest is much lower.

Should get it today and I can't wait. I know the 960M is that good nowadays, but after being stuck with Intel video cards with the MacBooks, anything with a GeForce chip will be an instant improvement.

Update: just got my XPS 15 at work and the screen is perfect. HOORAY. Love it already.

What screen issue?
Is it a FHD matte screen or QHD+ glossy/touch?
Also, is it a US model or EU?

I've heard there are differences based on those criteria. And since I'm considering an XPS 13, I'm curious.

0, the aren't any laptops with 120Hz panels available, and the only ones announced are part of the upcoming Asus ROG line which doesn't even have a release date.

As an extremely shortsighted person, this surprises me. OSX is miles ahead of Windows in terms of accessibility, including visual.
It's actually the reason why I'm considering going from my current Dell workstation to a MacBook Pro.

Man, that sucks. I have no idea if the models - and by that I mean the actual components - are the same in Australia and in Europe though.

I'm getting one with an FHD non-touch screen instead. Hate glare, don't need touch or UHD, love more battery life.

Why do so many manufacturers make 13/15" laptops with 3K+ displays anyway? Seems like a tremendous waste to me.

Still no news about 1060(m)?
I need a new Laptop soo bad but im not paying 1000+ for old Tech...
Edit: nevermind...

One thing people need to understand:

GTX 1080 = GTX 980 successor
GTX 1070 = GTX 980M successor
GTX 1060 = GTX 970M successor
GTX 1050 = GTX 960M successor

If those numbers hold true. I'm in for the 1070, might even consider the 1060.. The max I'll pay for a 1080 is $2400.

But yeah, it's better to wait at this point. I'm tempted everyday, but buying a gaming laptop now, is almost like buying PS4 atm; pointless, when the Neo is right around the corner.. (Xbox has a similar situation) It's the year of the hardware refresh on all fronts, if you've been following the industry.. Anyone on the market for new hardware should wait to see how things play out.

I expect the GTX 1080 machines to follow the pricing of the GTX 980 ones, so they'll be up close to $3k imo.

GTX 1070 will be enough for all but the 1%.

Seems like a steal, should I snag it before it disappears?

Laptop's stuck in clearance, albeit in my province, at the moment (it was supposed to arrive on Tuesday, only received a notification on Wednesday and had to call the shipping company in regards to this), so that's fun. I was hoping to have it here before the last date possible to install & upgrade Windows 8.1 to 10 via a clean install but it looks like that might not be the case.

Dell was discounting their models with the 960M by $200 earlier today, it's gotta be happening soon! Man, $549 for the i779 was really tempting.

I really hope the 10 series is worth the wait. I'm sure the power upgrade will be worth it, but I also hope the power consumption makes them longer lasting and potentially better form factors.

Thanks!

Newegg has a 2TB SSD on sale for about $370 CAD that looks like it would fit into my laptop (9mm), but I cannot for the life of me find any information about the quality or lack thereof of the OCZ brand SSD. Anyone have any experience with using one of them?

I can't find any reviews.

I like this.

When are the laptops with the gtx1080 expected to hit the market?

Next month to September.

From what little I could find, it seems like a fairly unknown brand that Toshiba tried to get into the SSD market that started off shaky in quality but is otherwise fine nowadays, if unremarkable as a consumer SSD. Either way, I found a 1.92 TB Samsung SSD (why 1.92?) from Newegg Canada that at least comes with a warranty and more info/reviews/benchmarks, much of which are positive to justify buying it without much risk, not to mention it's significantly cheaper so missing out on 80+GB (since formatting takes off a few GB) isn't much of a loss for a little over $300.
