No Man's Sky - Early Impressions/Reviews-in-progress Thread

The reviewer addressed the patch.

Well the experience people who are buying the game day 1 will get is different, so... Not really a consumer friendly move.

Say what you will about day 1 patches, but when you consider that >90% of this site's audience will be playing the game with the patch if they buy it, this review will be pretty much worthless once other sites start publishing more relevant reviews.

Game GAF doesn't hype, the version they get is the one they should review.
Game GAF does hype, got to wait for the 1 day patch before reviewing it!

They said don't play it before the patch numerous times because they were adding loads in a day 1 patch. The patch notes they released suggest just that. Key elements added/changed.

If the update drastically changes the experience of the game, so much so that’s it’s unrecognisable from what’s originally on the disc, then there’s something fundamentally wrong with the way games are being made; I wouldn’t pay for Chocolate Rice Crispies, receive plain Rice Crispies and then be told to wait while Kelloggs gets the chocolate flavouring together. Silly analogy, but it’s the same principle.

This is the dumbest shit I've read all year.

GAF unironically shitting on reviewers for a reviewing a game in time for its release.

if the version they've been sent is unfinished, that's on the developer.

Not sure how Pure PlayStation got their copy but it wasn't from Hello Games.

I agree but say that the review is pending day 1 patch. Instead of saying day 1 patches are fundamentally breaking gaming when it's not, it's breaking the review process.

Ontop of that the review copies aren't even out yet are they?

Seems a bit weird to post a review for a game people won't have then insist on posting your review due to principle.

I don't blame him at all for reviewing the original copy. I think he's right. You get what you pay for. I wish more reviewers would act like this.

Don't read if you don't want spoilers of course

Wow, that's material. Weird.

Anyway I think I see two schools of thought: obviously one is to review what "ships" and the other is to review what people will play (and in this case, actually at launch). The first seems unnecessarily punitive if this really is a day 1 patch. It would seem silly to me to read a review that doesn't match the experience most gamers will play on day 1.

I bet that sounded great in your head.

Why are people freaked about this he gave it an 8/10

First review thread?

Maybe I just haven't been properly following this whole thing, but a couple of games writers on my Twitter got the game Friday. Are those from retail stores breaking street date?

There were members of Polygon and I believe Kotaku that did go out and buy copies from retailers that were selling the game early. So yes, I do believe that is what happened.

The reviewer addressed the patch.

It's 2016, so maybe the reviewer by now would have worked up and understanding that games are software, and software are things that change. It sounds nice what he's saying, but in reality, the problem lies more with preorders and the continued depency on reviews.

At some point, the game has to ship, especially when delays are considered a sign of weakness, but why wouldn't the devs continue to improve the game if they can?

Yes they bought early copies. Review copies aren't sent out until release date so they can get the patch out.

It's not about the score. It's about the fact that the review covers a game that is drastically different to the one I and others will play when the day 1 patch is released.

For example, one complaint is the constant inventory management right now due to lack of space. The day 1 patch increases inventory significantly.

Review copies weren't sent out yet for a good reason.

I agree that people should wait for the patch HOWEVER some people will not be able to download the patch and will play the version without the patch so reviews not using the patch is just as valuable to me

I don't have a problem with them reviewing it as long as they mention the day one patch. They can take another look at it later once the patch has been released if they feel it warrants doing so. From what it sounds like the game has some major content patches/DLC planned so they will probably have to look at it later anyway. Besides, the day one "patch" for this game makes it sound like the game that ships on the disc isn't really ready to be released.

I agree with this. If the game can be played offline, you are not required to download updates, and this is how you will finish the game.

These days 8/10 is "meh"

First review thread?

Of course not but GAF hyperbole over reviews isn't something that gets me worked up.

I agree 100% and was defend this exact logic earlier.

Glad most people agree

While I disagree with them reviewing it so early, this is totally legit.

You know how people were making a big fuss about Xbox always being online because not everyone has internet? What will those people do with NMS?

I think the review is a little silly if the changes are drastic but it highlights a bigger issue really.

Why even bother sending the disc to print if there was so much shit that was going to be changed? Your gold master disc is a joke, you can barely call it version 1.00.

It's not an issue if you have constant internet access or whatever but what if, say, you're moving house and it isn't going to be set up for weeks? You've bought a beta.

If something is so significant that it changes the game to the degree that it will impact reviews it should be on the disc that is printed and put on store shelves.

I understand reviewers wanting to review what is available day 1, and not some promised updates a month or more down the line, but when the major patch is going to be available the day the game is out, and they want to review it without that, then I don't quite understand who they are reviewing the game for. Are they reviewing it for all those people who are going to buy the game launch day, get home, and proceed to play it offline forever? While I'm sure those people exist, I'd be surprised if they even made up 10% of the people getting the game. I feel a review should cover what the majority of people will experience day 1.
