PS4 Slim Review

Not offering 4K upscaling is kind of a huge miss.

Most people with 4K equipment probably wouldn't use it anyway, It would have my TV or receiver handle that before the PS4.

Upscale once ( sub1080p -> 4K) >>> Upscale twice (sub1080p -> 1080p -> 4K)
With a surround sound receiver that means adding additional lag. Optical is a more ideal solution.
Receiver should only add lag if it has an overlay. Which should be avoided at all cost imo for that exact reason.

The more trollish outsiders hate gaf. Cause they lurk here and generally get pissed at things individual people may say, so they extrapolate that to being the common sentiment.

Apparently we are known here at GAF as a "SJW Sony hivemind" that get pissy at everything and generally are to blame for most controversies on social media in gaming.

Well I'm an outlier then as I couldn't really give two hoots about mid gen console "upgrades" but do use optical out.

But I do use optical out?! If you got annoyed about something you didn't even use, that's all you.

I wouldn't care at all if OG PS4 was still going to be available or if previous Sony slims hadn't had them but it's not and they did so yeah, [for me] it's annoying.

Then keep your OG PS4 and buy refurbished if that one happens to break. Or get an optical splitter. Or don't and buy the NEO. It doesn't matter. But this is how it is for the Slim, so your going to have to get used to the reality

It's always fascinating that people argue from the perspective that you have to buy things. If you have a perfectly functioning ps4 with optical out why be so upset the slim doesn't.

Don't care about the optical thing really, but I still think that looks ugly as fuck. Which is a shame considering how much better the PS3 Slim looks compared to the original. But hey, they already have the George Foreman, so now they have a nice pizza box to go along with it. Cowabunga!

Any upscale from sub 1080p to 4K is going to have it's fair share of issues, and aside from a few exceptions, most games and all Blu-rays run at 1080p already.

I log a lot of hours playing Rocksmith, and the lack of the optical port means unacceptable HDMI audio latency. I never notice it in games, but it's pretty bad when your guitar lags.

Looks like it'll have more in common with a black eraser than just looks.

Neither can output 4K video.

There's an uncomfortable reality here in that those 5.1/7.1 optical gaming headsets don't have appreciably better sound quality than comparable headsets with 3.5mm or 1/4" analog jacks. Surround sound in a headphone form factor isn't appreciably better than a good pair of stereo headphones and the positional audio they can provide (and arguably worse when looking at the sound quality some of these gaming headsets provide).

I disagree here regarding positional audio especially if you have a nice set of open cans. I definitely feel like I can pinpoint sounds much better in competitive shooters with a negilible hit to sound quality.

But I guess it's a matter of preference and the quality of the headphone/headset.

No optical and no 4k playback means I'm still waiting on neo...

I'm wondering if there's an outside chance that it might drop optical as well. It has to have dual outputs if it is a 4k player, maybe it will be similar to the dedicated 4K players and have 2xHDMI out's.

The idea is to minimize lag. Receivers would very likely add much more input lag than if the PS4 handled it itself.

In my case, I always enable Direct Mode in the AV receiver for Rocksmith. Disables most of the electronics and does not do any sound processing, so it solves the latency for me.

The last time I used optical was with PS3 and The 3D version of ICO / SOTC, since my receiver can't process 3d signals and I had to connect the HDMI directly to the TV. But still, removing that connector is a dick move.

Unless they plan on undercutting the price of the X1 S, the lack of 4K upscale, 4K/HDR Blu Ray playback & 4K/HDR streaming seems conspicuous for a new Sony product that would normally include the latest features to help sell their new displays and Blu Rays. Had no idea about that, but I guess they want those consumers to look at the Neo instead.

HDMI audio latency is higher than optical? Since when? Can anyone provide a link to somewhere reliable?

The biggest difference I'm aware of between TOSLINK and HDMI is the bandwidth limitations; with optical the best you can get is bitstream DD/DTS 5.1 or stereo PCM. No DTS-HD MA.

I liked your original post better, it was more simple and succinct.

Generally speaking though, i'm still not understanding why people keep expecting this unit to have extra features like that, it is literally intended to be the PS4 we have right now except without an optical port, slimmed down to 14 nanometer process node. That's why they didn't even bother to call it something different.

You see how many people are saying they are skipping this product and going for NEO? You can't tell me Sony didn't plan that.

Its specifically to differentiate this budget model with the NEO which they are going all in for 4K playback and features.

They like to imagine they buy every product from their favorite company, plus its fun discussion, saw the Vita thread yesterday? :p

I would be sad if it didn't have optical but would understand. As a projector/Logitech Z5500 5.1 user my only option is optical.

If it doesn't have optical it will result in me having to buy at least a new receiver and Sub.

Super Ugly

"The retail store manager claims that while they broke street date, they did not steal the stock."

CEX do not sell hardware from suppliers, only second hand goods. This is a review of a product which was stolen, sold to a UK Pawn shop (which is what CEX basically is) and sold to someone LKD knows that allowed her to review the product.

This previously happened to Uncharted 4 which was broken by CEX and was the result of a violent assault.

Before we start this review, we must acknowledge the elephant in the room: the PlayStation 4 Slim has not yet been officially announced by Sony, nor is it meant to be on sale at this point. Our review unit originated from a retail store manager who sold the unit on eBay. The retail store manager claims that while they broke street date, they did not steal the stock. I believe the public interest angle of reporting on this piece of hardware should be protected under UK journalistic protections. It is in the public interest to know about a piece of upcoming technology that can be verified to exist, even if that confirmation did not come from the manufacturer itself.

I do not own the unit reviewed here, nor is it any longer in my possession.
Basically, please do not sue me Sony. I am just doing my job as a journalist. Issuing takedown notices when many other outlets have reported on the existence of the new model does nothing to hide its existence and only serves to harm the state of journalism within our industry.

So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the PS4 Slim.

Unfortunately under UK law willingly dealing in buying or selling stolen goods is a criminal act so this might still have been one of the worst moves she could make.

Without even thinking too hard I can think of three reasons to bemoan the exclusion of a pretty common (albeit more and more "legacy") output:

- Future replacement of broken or tired hardware;
- Additional consoles for holiday homes/offices/studies/studios/play-rooms etc.;
- New mid cycle purchasers with existing audio equipment but no console brand affiliation.

Then keep your OG PS4 and buy refurbished if that one happens to break. Or get an optical splitter. Or don't and buy the NEO. It doesn't matter. But this is how it is for the Slim, so your going to have to get used to the reality

Well aware of the reality, just posting that I, personally, don't like the omission. Optical, though aging, is far from dead as a means of outputting audio in the home.

All good though Inuhanyou. It's fine to disagree, horses for courses and all that.
