So our voting choices are either an ultrarich, out of touch, callous old person or an ultrarich, out of touch, callous old person who is a racist pig. What a dark age for the US.

Pretty much every recent president has been ultrarich except arguably Bill Clinton, who is Hillary's husband.

Well, my post is about reality. People are in here wondering how people get away with "fooling donors" and the potential benefits of doing so, how to get away with it, etc.

There is no mystery. The law says they are SUPPOSED to ignore donors wishes.

And I know you say "meanwhile in reality" because its easy to say the system is corrupt, but considering these platforms are set in stone (ink, text, video, web) and theres no evidence of quid pro quo, this "reality" youre referring to is literally speculation of corruption and conspiracy. Also good luck changing your platform without anyone noticing when youre getting a million hits a day from NeoGAF~!

You are welcome to give me evidence of favors and policy in exchange for donations though.
So why are these pro-TPP people donating to Hillary? Just for fun?

That the donors have no influence just sounds naive.

It's an unfortunate reality, but I don't see the point of singling out one candidate for schmoozing when it's more of an indictment of the system as a whole. You're not going to win a national election in this country by being a perfect flower, or even (generally) a state election.

Russ Feingold, the author of McCain-Feingold (the campaign finance law crippled by Citizens United) banned outside spending in his 2010 reelection campaign because he was sure he could win just by virtue of every Wisconsinite knowing how decent and honest he was. Guess what didn't happen. And now Feingold is running for his seat again but is open to outside spending.

You wanna change the rules, first you need to win.

Seriously. Some folks here are so pure, they'd rather Dems handicap themselves by tying one hand behind their backs than have a fighting chance against the GOP.

Every FDR was rich as fuck.
Truman was the best.
He refused to get paid for speeches and appearances after his presidency because he thought it was unbecoming. He did have to move with his in-laws after he left office.

Of course he got his political career started by a corrupt as fuck political boss who fixed an election for him because he thought he was dumb enough to deliver the pork that he told to (which he did). But nobody's perfect.

Holy shit, she's back!

Just in case people forgot this is the woman who switched support from Hillary to McCain in 2008 on the grounds that Obama was an elitist snob.

I don't see any issue with this! The ultrapoor can also attend fundraisers. Seems fair to me.

Disgusting. And people actually preferred her over Bernie. USA are doomed by their stupidity

Yes! Lynn Forester de Rothschild is a prime example of someone so intelligent she refused to vote for the corrupt Democratic regime in 2008.

He's the reason for the Presidential pension. (Which Hoover also took so as to not embarrass Harry.)

Two-term presidents may buy health insurance under the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program; a GSA legal opinion ruled Jimmy Carter and George H. W. Bush ineligible.
o snap

Richard Nixon relinquished his Secret Service protection in 1985, the only president to do so.
Shame he had to be president so he could be a decent ex-president,

“The Hamptons is full of powerful, wealthy people who are bored and go to constant social events to see who else got invited and to show your status,” said Ken Sunshine, a veteran Democratic activist and public relations executive with a home in Remsenburg, N.Y. “This year,” he added, “going to a Clinton event is at the very top of the list.”

Honestly this is so annoying. It is so hard to get in touch with my boss on Fridays!

He's also the reason why we have a chief of staff.

He also brought sexy back -

I personally know of some GAFfers who would pay $10k to take a quick pic with the struggling queen and they're not rich.

Checkmate benji.

This is such a dumb criticism. Hey, the Republicans are gerrymandering and disenfranchising voters - we gotta do it too! Come on, keep that skin in the game, win at any cost!

Shitty behavior is shitty regardless of who is doing it. Turning a blind eye to shitty behavior because it benefits you is, like, fundamentally unethical.

These threads are useful because they serve as a beacon for people who don't know a goddamn thing about politics in this country.

Agree 100%. It's really bad in neogaf but neogaf is too liberal.

Not an American but even skimming this thread...there's literally nothing stopping people having debates and conversations about Clinton? Anyone who has "defended" Hilary has pointed out the system is corrupt, and she's no worse than anyone else, rather than saying she is "innocent" entirely.

Is it not a forum for discussion and debate or just a forum for binary agreement?

Eh... if it would have saved us from 8 years of Bush I'm trying to think of a crime that I wouldn't have looked the other way from.

...

Still struggling to think of one.

No. it's bribes disguised as political donation. What's depressing is all the posters here defending this reprehensible shit as "normal". The standards for a decent politician and human being or in fact for political discussion have dropped like a rock here. I weep for humanity if Clinton's disgusting involvement with the ultra-rich ruling class is considered "normal" nowadays.

It can be both disgusting and normal.

Thaaaats politics.

Fundraising is necessary to win, gerrymandering is not. There's a difference.

I'm all for changing the system, but you won't do it by losing.

Aren't private fundraisers a primary part of any and all presidential campaigns? NYT making it seem like Hillary is only interested in dealing with the ultrarich just because Trump is flailing about on network news.

Trump won't need to pivot to be "president of the people" when the New York Times is doing it for him.

That's...normal for a campaign.

How does this compare to for example Bill Clinton's, Bush's and Obama's campaigns? Did they do the same thing? Sounds like pretty standard procedure to raise money.

Not that I really mind. Take the money. Spent it on ads and events in the next few months to try and get as many votes as possible. Meanwhile Trump with his public appearances has embarrassed himself more and more. Why go out while your competitor is already doing the job for you.

First 3 of 5 posts. Is this really normal in America? Should we really accept this no matter who is doing it?

If it were anyone but Clinton this article would never even have been written.

Remember the wall of excuses used to defend Bernie when he did the exact same thing?

I think the term used was non-news?

And Bernie wasn't fundraising for downballot and even tried to attack her for doing so.

She doesn't need the money, though. You're acting as though this is some close race.

She doesn't need the money; the party does. This is for down ticket. There are plenty of close races up and down the ticket where this money will help. Everything from Congress to the Senate to Governors to District Attorneys. The last two are particularly important if you care about Criminal Justice reform. They will have a much larger effect than the President will.

When did Bernie disappear for this long only to be seen amongst the elite?

When did Hillary attack her opponent for fundraising for downballot while he didn't do any of it?

While trying to get the same downballot delegates to vote for him?

Also, she isn't appearing in national news. She is all over local news, which is more important for downballot support.

Debating is hard though. People would rather agree with someone else 100% instead of coming up with their own arguments and talking points. It's also easier to call a forum a hivemind and be done with it, helps with deflection when a bunch of people start to post counterpoints.
