Nesbox emulator allegedly passes Win10 Xbox One certification

Did a quick search and couldn't find anything. Emulock me if old.

Sounds like good news for the dev of nesbox emulator. IMO it would be poor form for MS to start dropping the hammer on smaller app devs. when they've been harping about this universal store for what seems like years now. Currently it doesn't feel any different then the previous xbox app store. If we started seeing more of the traditional apps we're use to seeing in the windows mobile store for example, that would be a step in the right direction for me and this is potentially that step forward.

Edit: Nesbox Dev. and several other gaffers have been able to find and download the emulator on the windows store but it doesnt currently work on xbox one and is not listed in the store as supported on xbox one despite mentioning xbox support in the description. The dev. and others online have speculated that it takes time (roughly 2-4 days allegedly) for it to make its way it to the xbox app store.

If someone drops the hammer it won't be because of MS, it will be because of Nintendo. Let's hope Nintendo doesn't take issue with this.
 
I'll be very curious to see what the life of this product looks like on Xbox One (how much it is used, if it stays on the store forever or mysteriously disappears at some point, etc.).

Being legal isn't an instant "pass" for certification on a closed platform. Nor does being legal mean it won't end up being taken down due to publisher (Nintendo, Capcom, etc.) complaints.

Sure they can. Nintendo et al. may not have any legal backing to force a takedown, but MS would almost certainly comply with takedown requests regardless.
 
If someone wanted to legally play their NES games on an Xbox One, what would they need to do? Somehow get the ROMs off their cartridges onto their PC, then transfer the files to an Xbox One via HDD or USB (or some kind of wireless data feature if Xbox One has that)?

I guess this partially answers my question. Then it would just be a matter of getting NES games onto your PC.

Rip off VC release or cartridge (via Retron or whatever), then use external HDD or USB drive.

You can dump physical copies via retron or retrode. If you own them on virtual console and you have a hacked wii, wii u, or 3ds you can dump those as well.


Reminder, this emulator is for nes, snes, genesis, gameboy color, and gameboy advance.

ps4 emulate ps2 with lower clocked cpu (but proably more optimised emulator)
so i guess lot of ps2 could be ok (gpu won't be the problem here)
 
Can the hardware manufacturers write their own emulators for other consoles and include it in the OS? Or is it different for when it comes through an externally developed app?

Xbox or Xbox 360 emulator? Microsoft doesn't sell Xbox games on their systems, right? I can't imagine they'd care too much about that. I could see 360 being an issue, though, if those games are sold digitally.

If Microsoft were to reject an Xbox 360 emulator but approve an NES emulator, would that actually affect anything? I'd think it'd be the legal right of Microsoft to do that, even if Nintendo saw it as a dirty and frustrating move.

I never said when, I just said it's gonna happen. If they open the floodgates, it'll happen, and I doubt a lot of publishers would like Microsoft allowing it.

They sell some Xbox games on 360. Not a lot, mind you. They've also re-packaged some like Halo 1 and 2, here and there. But again, them allowing this is something that would piss off quite a few third party publishers, Capcom being a primary example.

or just about everyone who generates revenue from re-releasing their legacy games
 
I'd say it's probably more likely that the people who's code he likely nicked for his emulators have more of a legal ground than Nintendo does.

Assuming it's only delisted and not removed from the servers outright. I imagine if this were to be taken down, it would be the latter.

Technically, MS could even revoke licenses altogether if they really wanted to.
 
Won't this screw Nintendo with their future VC lineup for NX? Why would people buy VC games when they can download and play it on Xbox One?

Also would MS be ok if Sony let a Xbox and 360 emulator on their AppStore?

Yup, emulators are legal and Ms don't care what Nintendo thinks. Third parties they don't want to piss off tho.

From stuff we've heard, at least from Microsoft's side, there is a relationship between Microsoft and Nintendo...whatever it is. Like I said in the other thread, the primary company that would have a problem with this RIGHT NOW is Capcom because of Mega Man 1-6 already being available for purchase on Xbox One. That's a major conflict of interest.
