So, Iran is an asshole country that dislikes us so they do things like this:

Seven Iranian fast attack boats harassed a U.S. Navy ship in the Middle East over the weekend, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

The incident occurred Sunday in the central Persian Gulf, Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, told reporters.

During the encounter, Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy fast attack craft approached the USS Firebolt when it was operating in international waters, Davis said.
Three of the boats "maneuvered close to the ship, shadowing her course from a range of about 500 yards," Davis said.

The boats eventually broke off, but one turned toward the Firebolt and came to a stop directly in front of the ship, he added.

"This caused the Firebolt to have to maneuver to have to avoid collision. They came within about 100 yards of each other during the interaction. The Firebolt attempted multiple radio communications with the Iranians," Davis said.

"This is another example of another unsafe and unprofessional interaction we've had with the [Iranian navy] in the Gulf."

A defense official said there have been 31 such interactions with the Iranian navy so far this year.

"This is clearly a pattern, and it's one we're not happy about, and we'd like to see this sort of behavior stop," Davis said.

This insane response to Iran being annoying and dumb would probably escalate into a major diplomatic incident and there's no way Trump could handle a major incident like this (during which the Iranian leaders will condemn and mock Trump to score political points) without escalating this to all-out war. Trump is too easily baited and Trump's advisers (and the general GOP) are desperate for any reason to start a war against Iran and Iran would almost surely give the U.S. some (flimsy) reason for invasion and or bombing after an event like this.

There are lots of reasons one will not invade Iran. Hilly terrain, for a country that has spent the last decade and a half fighting in one of the mountainous countries in the world(Afghanistan) isn't one of them.

THAT being said, Iran isn't a country I want becoming an even greater enemy of the US. The last thing we need right now is another active conflict.

Well, in fairness, the relationship we have with Iran is probably about the healthiest it's ever been. I mean, yeah, shit like this creates an image like it's bad, but look past it a bit and all you're seeing really is petty dick-measuring. I think the actual alliance we have with them is pretty solid for now. Of course, it'll probably never be truly great as long as we support Israel like we do.

I listened to Republicans during the Bush administration constantly hawk over Iran (McCain even made a stupid jingle out of it), but they never asked us to develop a plan in case military action needed to actually happen. Then Obama asked for a plan barely a few years into his presidency and then pushed to solve it diplomatically. I prefer a president who weighs his options and makes plans for even undesirable outcomes.

They do. Last year the Chinese sailed into American waters with war ships less than twelve miles from the Alaskan coast. We didn't send boats out to harrass them. A couple years ago, Russian subs were caught off the coast of Georgia. They've also been caught off the coast of Florida and California, as well as fucking around with undersea cables. In none of those cases did we send out boats or subs to get in their faces and taunt them, because no one is interested in getting into a shooting battle.

I imagine your intended point was that if the U.S. didn't have its ships all over the globe, they'd be safe from this sort of confrontation, which is not a bad point. Shame you wrapped it up in the idea that other foreign powers don't violate territorial waters.
