Windows Store still overpriced for European PC gamers (FH3 €69.99)

How much does it cost in a retail store though?

On the Microsoft/Playstation stores new games are like $100 while physical versions are $70- $80

This is why i never buy anything from the digital console stores.

Windows 10 and Xbox being the same platform seems pretty clever as well, but the price was always going to be a problem. I'm surprised MS didn't attempt a slightly lower digital price and try and make up the money from DLC and micro-transactions. Still burned from the Forza 5 backlash I suppose.

Yep, that's preeeeeeetty funny.
That's like David chopping off his arms before fighting Goliath.

"A: Alright folks. PC gamers don't really trust us, our previous efforts have been laughable, -what can we do to get this market place going?
B: Less options?
C: No mods?
A: Yep sounds good! In fact, it sounds so good I think we can get away with charging more than anybody else! Let's do it!"

Wait so the prices aren't wrong...you just don't think pc games are worth as much as much as console games? Yeah okay

No fucking game is worth 70€ euros though. That's a fucking insane price.

Lol yeah that's why...steam doesn't take any sort of cut or anything

??
Publishing a retail game on Xbox One: Pay licensing fees to MS
Publish the game on retail on Xbox One: Pay licensing fees AND the store cut

Publish a game on Steam: Store cut only for direct store purchases
Publish a steam game on another digital store or your own store: No cut to steam
Publish the steam game on retail: no cut to steam

pls try harder

Honestly, I expected more for a Brazilian price. Bethesda, Disney, EA and others usually do R$250

But yeah, still not good. My friend bought Gears of War 3 for R$150

PC games have been cheaper than console games for eternity

Do you know why? Because of piracy...as that specific issue seems to be solved for the moment why would you get a discount over console players, other than "that's the way its always been"

And this is why physical games will remain so popular in EU, buying new games digital on console is just crazy considering the prices.
In Belgium we pay 70 euro for a new game, with no resell value, while in most stores you can buy the same game for +- 52 euro and you can resell it for quite a lot.

Steam is taking the same cut as Sony and Microsoft, so why are game prices so high on consoles?
You can call it greed, but I wonder what the rate is between physical/digital games for a new AAA game. If they would sell it for normal Steam prices, I would buy much more games digital, with the added benefit for publishers that I can't resell it.
That said, the sales are getting better and better every time. I just have a used PS4 console for a week and the EU sale is pretty great with really cheap prices, even for recent AAA-games.

In US and in EU they will charge whatever they charge for the Xbox One Digital version on the windows store. It is a single purchase to get the game added to your account for Win 10 and XB1. Digital console games cost more in Europe so that makes this PC version on Win 10 store cost more. It is why many people I know in the UK are physical on console. Deals are often much better even at launch for games.

The worst bit is that digital is the ONLY way to go on PC. On Xbox you can go physical for 50€ or cross-play digital for 70€, but there's no physical copy for PC or PC-only version. YAY!

Paid $60 US from a different region store because why would I pay $100 Australian for this when it's so easy to workaround.

Definitely, it's cheaper to buy it on Xbox One taking advantage of foreign cheaper Stores, or some key online, since it's a Xbox Everywhere title

And that's why I decided against selling my One despite Microsoft releasing all their games on PC. I have zero confidence in Microsoft's PC gaming efforts and those prices are just ridiculous. Every Xbox One exclusive will tank anyway here in Germany so might as well take advantage of that.

Yup. You can buy Xbox One Ultimate Edition at retail and get a steelbook for 80$ in NA with BB GCU or Amazon Prime. No discount on PC.

Piracy has no play in the price, it's just that there's no Sony/MS cut...

Console games are more expensive because console manufacturers take a cut, not because of piracy.

Kek.

Yea privacy was the reason games usually cost 50-60 euro rather than 70, cos that made the difference for pirates.

If thats the case, then why don't we see all the Denuvo games charging 70.

And "that's the way it has always been" is pretty fucking valid argument for me as a consumer you know.

Oh yeah, sure. Sounds legit
"Hmmm...people pirate our game....LET'S MAKE IT MORE EXPENSIVE! That'll encourage more people to buy it!"

Steam gets the same cut...

But as there is no storefront lockdown on PC if publishers were to charge the extra 10€ for digital games everyone would just go to the store and input the code into whatever storefront they use (or just be lazy to do that and go back to pirating their games)

Please explain how piracy makes games cheaper on the PC.

I don't understand, what's the difference between taking a cut from every single unit sold and taking a cut from the overall gross sales?

Steam takes a cut from Steam store sales only
They don't take a cut from steam keys sold on other digital download stores
They don't take a cut from steam keys included on physical versions

Xbox takes a licensing fee on retail
Xbox takes a licensing fee + a store cut on their Digital Download store.

Steam gets their "reseller" cut and this exists also for physical games on consoles. It pays the storefront, not the platform holder. The MS/Sony/Ninti cut we are referring to here is yet another cut (the Constructor cut).

For physical games, this thread is about digital games and Sony/Microsoft take the same cut as Steam.

Edit: or do you mean also on digital games? That Sony/Microsoft take 2 cuts out of a digital game? That would be weird.

It's because games are reasonably price elastic in the PC market, it has absolutely nothing to do with piracy. Pretty simple undergrad stuff.

I had no idea about the existence of licensing fee on top of the digital store cut. Fuck this shit!

Nothing new sadly. It's why I rarely buy digital. EU/UK prices tend to be rather shit.

Xbox used to be slightly better for the UK price wise. They had games for 45 quid on the xbox ones launch which isn't that much more than retail. Now they've gone up to £55 which is significantly more than retail.

Steam, origin, uplay, psn and all that have always been rubbish for the UK though.

Sony/Microsoft take the store cut AND still have licensing fees.

This is so weird, I knew they take a licensing cut for physical games, that's understandable, but for digital games?
Are there some exact reliable numbers for this? What is Sony's total cut from a 70 euro game on PSN?

Prices on PC are related to the the way the market works. They were cheaper because PC gamers expect cheaper. See Overwatch for example, which was 40 dollars on PC, while 60 on console. This is not a game that had to worry about piracy due to being an always online title.

The shift toward 60 dollar games began like 4 or 5 years ago with publishers like EA, Ubisoft, and Activision, it had nothing to do with piracy having been stopped, because it certainly wasn't then.

There a guide on how to buy it off the Singapore score on an Aussie account?

https://www.microsoft.com/en-sg/store/collections/greatxboxgames/pc

click here, if its set to aussie scroll down to set country, choose singapore - EN

search for gift card or go here https://www.microsoftstore.com/stor...Page&result=&sortby=score descending&filters=

buy enough to get your game, redeem it on your account (set region to singapore)

go back to the link above and buy your game

Forza Horizon 4 set in Singapore confirmed?
I'd be down for that lol.

Yeah, the 70€ price tag is ridiculous. I've never paid 70€ for a measly digital standard edition of a game (and probably not even for game + season pass combined) and I never will.
Got FH3 from the Singapore Store for a price I'm willing to pay for digital and if they close that "alternative" way of buying, I'll just wait for a 50%+ off sale for any potential Xbox PC game that I'm intersted in.
Provided it doesn't hit Steam by the time that happens kek
