Assassin's Creed Empire first leaked screenshot

Yes, we took a year off. But that doesn't mean we're not giving you the same old schlock when we come back. $59.99, please.

This is exactly why devs don't want to show these early builds to the public. Because they often reuse stuff like menus and assets for their new game in these internal tests.

People will see those pictures and read into it, just like you did.

Finally something that's not European.

Say what? If it's setting you're talking about, then:

AC1 in Jerusalem/Damascus/etc - not European
AC: Revelations in Istanbul (Constantinople) - not European
AC3 in the north American colonies - not European
AC4 in the colonial Caribbean - not European

And that's before we take into account a bunch of the handheld and spinoff games.

My ranking so far would be:

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Assassin's Creed II
Assassin's Creed: Syndicate
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
Assassin's Creed III
Assassin's Creed: Revelations
Assassin's Creed: Unity
Assassin's Creed

I placed ACII and AC:B ahead of Syndicate as I have bit of a soft spot for them, but if I were to rate them objectively I would probably rate Syndicate higher. Syndicate was a bit of a return to form in terms of story (and performance with regards to Unity). The story in the games seemed to be on the decline since Revelations, and whilst I felt III had an okay story, BF and Unity were both very lackluster. With Syndicate, it had some really fun characters, a good villain, some great gameplay additions such as the grappling hook thing, as well as a really well designed world.

I shutter to think of the reaction gamers would have if they found out what gameplay tests look like before they implement new models and such. It's insane how out of touch gaming culture is with game development considering the intense amount of available information.

Oh, for fuck's sake. "E-Store" and "Ubisoft Club." Do not like the sound of those. Still, pretty cool, I guess. 'Bout damn time they leaked something.

I really hope they manage to totally refresh the franchise and the old rumors of it playing very differently are true cause I have had way too much of the current formula already.

And give us a new modern day protag, please.

For those complaining about some of the options in the menu...

It's basically an exact copy of Syndicate's menu - typeface, font size, all of it. Preexisting assets are often used early in development just to see if the engine is working properly. If this is real, it's more than likely just Syndicate's menu mapped to the new game's pause function to see if things work. It will undoubtedly be very different whenever the game sees the light of day.

Can't really get excited for Egypt tbh. Wouldn't the city be like really flat and primitive? Doesn't seem too hot to climb in compared to the fantastic building we got to traverse on in earlier games.

can't agree with you there - i think it would be a great setting with unique architectures.

Is the 3rd pic/painting from Egypt? Seems a bit Greek-y/Roman-y to me :p Though given those two/three civilaztions were, at some point, in heavy contact with each other I wouldn't be surprised if some things crossed over on all sides.

not really. many Egyptian temples are very large and have immense verticle space. look at the temples at Abu Simbel, featuring colossal statues of Ramesses II. look at the Karnak Temple Complex, home of the Great Hypostyle Hall, featuring pillars that are 10 meters tall.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Simbel_temples
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karnak

Egyptian temples were also very ornately decorated at the original time of use. they were covered in bright, colorful paints. they had precious gems embedded in walls and monuments. they were filled with statues and treasures that have long since been stolen by graverobbers or the many imperialist forces who simply came through Egypt and took what they wanted. the pyramids themselves look crusty and dull now but were once polished to a sheen and featured a gold plated cap at the top, which reflected the sunlight for miles.

outside of temples there are the villages, which yeah can be a little flat, but if they take inspiration from the great cities like Cairo, there is plenty of verticality to be found. think the town from Disney's Alladin -- plenty of scaling, swinging, leaping to be done.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I hope they really rethink the gameplay but I don't expect it. They keep repeating the same issues with every game.

My biggest concern with an Ancient Egyptian setting is density. Much like the Caribbean in Black Flag (which admittedly is one of the better games in the franchise), the idea of living out the life of an assassin feels diluted and somewhat lessened in wide open spaces. Black Flag worked in spite of this because it was more concerned with placing you into the shoes of a Pirate. Not sure this will be as successful...

That said, the leak also suggests part of the appeal of the period is the lack of firm historical record. If they're going to let this influence their interpretation of Ancient Egyptian architecture in a way that allows for urban spaces on par with, say, the first game, then I'm all for it. For what it's worth - I more than welcome the return to a sort of Middle Eastern vibe (technically African, but you know). That atmosphere, combined with the mythical quality of Ancient Egypt ought to feel appropriately assassin-esque.

Edit:

Just want to add that - in retrospect - Syndicate was an unfortunate victim of franchise fatigue combined with spillover from the Unity cluster-fuck. I was lukewarm on it at first, but revisiting it months later, I'm finding it excellent. Mind-blowing recreation of London (pairs well with Peaky Blinders, which I'm presently watching) along with lots of humor, likable characters, and genuinely improved gameplay. If you've skipped the last couple of games, I highly recommend picking it up. I just wish they'd pick a firmer direction for the modern-day stuff and commit to it (I'd rather not see it scrapped entirely).

Not sure about this.

Though there was an Egyptian empire the word "empire" is more often associated with the Romans or British. Certainly neither of them exclusively own it but that's the way it is. You would expect Ubi to use something like 'Assassins Creed Dynasties'.

Ubi must be convinced we don't like it or something.
I think it good enough to be it's own thing, I would buy a mp only AC in a heartbeat.

Actually I pretty much bought brotherhood, ACIII and black flag just to play in multiplayer with my brother, I didn't spend more than a couple hour in the single player.

Syndicate had both of these options as well, they are nothing new. A lot of games have similar functions.

Oh, yeah, I know that. Doesn't change the fact that I dislike them, though. They won't bother me so much, though, since I can and will just ignore them, but it'll still irk me every once in a while when I see them.

The corner of that screenshot says © Ubisoft Montreal. I thought Ubisoft Quebec was the lead on Assassin's Creed titles now.

I'm playing through Unity at the moment and I get that same feeling, haha. I just accept it's Ubisoft being Ubisoft, ignore it and move on. Guess I'll be doing the same with Syndicate, when I get around to that, and Empire, when it drops.

Im really looking forward to this one. Its ubisoft so im not too optimistic or excited, but deep down I really hope this will be the much needed game changer for the AC universe.

Come on Ubi. Feudal Japan. Big castles, numerous samurai 'heavy' classes, ninja clans, rich historical characters, great weapons, mountain hide outs, grappling hooks. Good grief. Why they have not made that game boggles my mind.

I hope all the Egyptians look like Christian Bale and Taylor Swift and speak with terrible accents.

I thought AC: Freedom Cry was in Egypt till I checked it just now.

You are proving his point. But Ubi will add a lot of 'artistic' liberty and make something more appealing than reality- as they do.

I hope the whole game doesn't look like that. It looks really similar to AC2.

There are dozens of us!

Ubisoft please, we have been waiting for so long for a new MP, had the feeling that microtransactions for characters and costumes could bring a decent amount of money too...

Microtransactions are never the answer.

To clarify guys, those are Syndicate's menus. These are most likely placeholders as the game is still early in development and should not reflect on the final game. There's a possibility that the game will not have an e-store with microtransactions.

LMFAO, what's with the low resolution JPG shitposting? Those screens aren't even a full 720P and are uploaded to imgur no less...meanwhile, in reality, and let's compare the PC build with the PC alpha seen in that original video, this is in-game footage of Unity taken by neogaf:
They absolutely delivered on their visual promise with Unity. So yes, eagerly waiting.
