Thumper review thread

MUTHAFUCKIN THUMPER

raw

Thumper is the last thing a beetle imagines when it smacks into a windshield. Thumper is what it’s like to peer into the subconscious of the guitar-playing Doof Warrior from Mad Max: Fury Road. Thumper is a rhythm game stripped down to the rims – a primal, uncomfortable nightmare by design. Though it shares a few DNA strands with other games out there, Thumper is its own unique beast – a mean, unrelenting animal.

Truly the best description of the game. Ignore everything else in the Gameinformer review.

I keep seeing the word 'violent' come up in reviews and descriptions of the game. I feel like that's one of those "you had to be there to understand kind of deals."

Mine just finished downloading but I still think I might hold off for VR on Thursday. Or maybe I won't. Shit.

Full Definition of violent
1: by extreme force or sudden intense activity
2a : notably furious...
2b : extreme, intense
3a : emotionally agitated to the point of loss of self-control
Thumper is all those things

Kinda disappointed that whilst it's coming to Steam, it won't support Vive/Oculus for now. VR mode seems exclusive to PSVR. Excited to try this out nonetheless.

PC VR support will be added by the end of the year with a free update.

The release announcement on Steam says so.

I sucked it up and played the first level and I get it now.

Whoa. This game can go fast. Really fast. Between the visuals and sound, I feel like this might be sensory overload in VR. It's pretty freaking incredible.

Also, I'm generally not the best at these types of games so I struggled with level 1. I can see how this game can get insanely difficult.

Fucking love this game. I feel so incredibly immersed playing it now on my PC, so the thought of being even more immersed with VR sounds terrifyingly exciting.

Sony forgot to bribe Gameinformer it seems.

Or is GameStop too salty that this game is amazing and for digital purchase only?

I'm holding off until I get the PSVR demo. If it's what I want it to be, I'll pick it up quick. If the VR implementation isn't phenomenal, I'll grab it on Steam.

I had to put the controller down at 2-15. Holy shit, I feel like I've been abused and I need to speak to someone. I think I'm going to have to come to terms with the fact that I'll never be able to beat this game.

I'm also a bit worried that I may die playing this game in VR. It might be perfect for VR and too much all at the same time. The way they handle your beetle taking damage visually is punishing.

If I can make it to Stage 4, so can you. It's possible

Is this basically just a super-polished Minter/Llamasoft game that's finally made it to PS4? In terms of a good head-fucking, I mean.

Because I'm cool with that.

I don't normally impulse buy, but its 20 bucks. Impulse bought.

I really hope the skill curve isn't too steep. I'm starting to get old. Reaction times aren't what they used to be.

This game sounds amazing! I love Amplitude and Rockband Blitz and it seems to be similar. I was toggling between buying Thumper or Rez at PSVR launch (I will likely own both once Pro releases).

For those that have played both, which would you choose and why (Thumper or Rez)?

Thanks in advance!

EDIT - Correction, Rez is $30, Thanks Gemeanie!

This game came out of nowhere for me. I guess it will be on my PSVR buy list though I have to check some gameplay videos first.

So how does the game actually work?

I have read that it's simply one analogue stick and one button so I assume you move tracks with the stick and press the button for the prompts but I thought when watching a video that it has square prompts and line prompts so wasn't sure of there was a difference etc.

Bit hard to tell with the visual assault taking place but I am really interested in picking it up for my psvr :)

Good lord, Game Informer.

Don't understand why they let people review the game who
a)Has no interest in the game.
b)Can't give the game a fair and unbiased review

A good game is a good game
I personally hate Minecraft but that doesn't mean it isn't a quality game.

I dont understand the need to have everyone like a game?
it's his opinion, he doesn't like it. that doesn't make him biased, he just doesn't get that much out of the game

jeez people

But it's not a real game, just a VR tech demo or 10 minute 'experience' /s

I dont think anyone has said this is a VR tech demo

By your logic all games should either have a 100 or a 0 on Metacritic. Reviews are opinions. Different people can have different opinions about the same thing, that's part of life. I will never understand why so many people can't seem to wrap their head around this.

There are several mechanics in the game, each stage brings something new. But it's basically going through the track and doing the right moves to avoid dying/increasing your combo. Everything you do is tied to the rhythm of the music.

THUMPER is magnificent, and THUMPER is evil. It is a snarling inversion of the dancing-around-the-candles, toe-tapping euphoria that is the lifeblood of those music racing games it seems to ape. Make no mistake, it becomes euphoria, but that euphoria is earned, not given. It is the euphoria of survival and of dancing in solitary anger, not happy fellowship.

THUMPER, with its minimum of menus and explanation and guidance is absolutely pure, to the point that those who do not enjoy its light-from-darkness aesthetic will think it too small, to samey, too one-note, too much about the same sound playing forever. Perhaps it really can offer nothing to those people, or perhaps accepting that is it very fucking sincerely intended to be the same state of mind held for an eternity will let it seep into their veins after all. For the rest of us, let it take its place alongside Devil Daggers, reigning in hell.

Is there timing for.grinding walls and x-smashing through the sets of lines that are at right angles?
If there are two walls like left right do you have to let go and repress x during the transition?

awww, poor gameinformer. game was too hard for them, bless their little soul. lol

This game is going to be too hard for a lot of people. Maybe myself included. I think I remember the guy in the GameSpot stream saying that it was easier to see turns and stuff coming in VR. I'm hoping so because I'm definitely feeling like I'm in over my head lol.

Guys, I was oblivious on this until yesterday. I keep seeing keywords of terrifying/horrifying etc. I have seen some videos and I just don't get it? Space beetle rhythm game? What am I missing because I'm intrigued.

You're missing a pair of headphones with a strong low-end.

I had high expectations for this one ever since I read a preview in OPM where they praised it as the best rhythm game they had played in a long time.
