720p device releasing in 2017? You're kidding me, right?

Even if that is serviceable, people know what resolutions are these days and that won't be seen as a good thing in the eyes of the masses.

Why go for 1080p+ when even the Ps4 and XBOne have problems with rendering at that resolution? Native resolution games >>>> high dpi for cleaner text on a gaming device.

That's... not what Kimishima said. There's no evidence of any super-secret gimmick; the USP is exactly what Nintendo showed off last week.

I want GamePad compatibility!

So if the rumor about no power boost on the dock is true, guess that means all the games will be 720p on your TV? Unless they're actually running at 1080 on the switch and being down sampled to 720?

ITT people don't understand that a 1080p (or higher) screen would result in many games in sub-native resolution, which is a lot more gross. The Vita ended up with a lot of them.

I'm glad they went with 720p, it's a good, reasonable resolution.

And in terms of physical PPI it's actually slightly higher than the Vita's, which looked just fine.

Nintendo's Pro Bono PR Firm
same display size as Wii U Gamepad screen, btw

854x480 vs 1280x720, nice Switch upgrade, knowing I already like playing off TV on the GamePad. I hope the red color will display better this time.

People still buy cheap 720p phones. So i don't think the masses will really care.

Seems like a disaster to me, not sure why everyone's so glad about this. If multitouch is an important part of games, playing it ino TV will be a mess. No, IR pointing is not a proper replacement for touch either. IR pointing is a huge part of why I avoid playing wii games.

Whole appeal to me and seeming core of the entire device was 1:1 play on console or portable. If that's not it this just seems like a mess.

The touchscreen isn't going to be a big part of games most likely. They will probably offer touchscreen options on the go like picking inventory items and such that can be replaced by IR pointer if you want. Otherwise, I imagine 99% of games will be playable without any of it at all.

Sure hope that dock does something for the res. I'm not planning on playing it on the go much, I don't want Switch games to be limited to 720p on my TV...

The dock doesn't do anything that major. This is the price you pay to be able to play this huge thing away from the TV for ~3 hours.

OMG! we're in 2017 why does not this thing have 4K display seriously!! and 10 hour battery life! and more powerful than PS4 dammit it was released 3 years ago come on!
btw, i won't pay more 250$.

The masses really don't care that much about resolution. DVDs still massively outsell Blu-Rays. The most popular console in the US the last couple of months is the one which plays the most popular third party games at lower resolutions than its competitor (including the most popular game of the moment, BF1, at 720p). The most popular hardware in Japan for the past few years runs games at 240p, and the most popular smartphone is just over 720p itself.

I think this neatly explains why everyone in the commercial had their switch dock perfectly centered underneath the TV.

Except...the very first person you see.

Hopefully there's some sort of policy in place that multitouch can't be required/important.

There was a rumour that touch isn't meant to be important for playing the games, and more for navigating menus, etc.

It's 237 PPI which isn't that bad. The real concern is of the actual screen quality, color reproduction, ghosting and the like

If they force people to use the IR pointer as a replacement for touch that would be horrible. We still haven't heard if games are going to upres to 1080p on a TV, right? If they don't, I really do not see a reason to get this.

Would be worse to have 1 hour or battery life. This is for gaming not to be your 1080p phone, people play at less than 30fps on 1080p on ps4 so you really think they care about anything? You just say is cool and they will follow.

Just because your phone has a 1080p or greater screen doesn't mean the games you play on it render at that resolution.

4K on a 42 inch TV is 104.9 PPI

720p on a 6.2 inch screen is 236.87 PPI

Unless you're shoving the thing into your face I seriously doubt you'd ever see a visible pixel. Bigger numbers are not always noticeable nor are they always feasible.

Not at all unreasonable to expect something beyond 720p for a console which will be played at home on a TV by many.

Don't worry, I'm sure the dock will output 1080p, just like the Wii U does. And is not like you are worried about scaling artifacts since you want 1080p on a handheld anyway.

The bleeding reds on the Wii U gamepad were due to the colorspace of the compressed video stream, that will not be an issue on Switch for sure.

An IR sensor in the dock, would that work even if it's tucked away under a TV?

The IR "sensor" is in the right joycon. The switch display likely has IR lights where the Switch is exposed in the dock. Which makes sense considering Wiimote like functionality and reports from LPVG.

Awesome, can't wait to experience Wii hell again trying to play something that forces right-hand IR pointing as a lefty.

You're so right, Lets have a 1080P screen with 1 hour battery life, That'll go well!

So people would rather have a $499 1080p gaming console/handheld with a 1.5 hour battery life because muh resolutionz

Par for the course for the gaming audience I guess. Why is this not half the price and twice as powerful!?

..am I reading this correctly that people think that the games will output at 720p on TVs when the text says that 720p is the screen resolution of the portable screen

Anything higher than 720p would unnecessarily increase the price. The most important thing Switch needs to be is cheap.

it will also help the battery life.

sadly I've to say...yes. and I've no idea why. it's like running in a circle...

It's Nintendo. Why wouldn't they fuck this up somehow? I'm still expecting >$300 for this thing, which is fucking hilarious for a 720p device in goddamn 2017.

Touch will not be something of a requirement. At least that's the rumors are alluding to.

Besides, this opens up possibilities of bringing games that may need touchscreen controls (mostly the ones that are handheld-only before). We''ll still have to see how well that will translate to docked mode with IR though.

People really think they will get PS4 power with a form factor like this?
Sony will shortly release the ps4 slim you might wanna do a reality Check.

720p is more than fine for gaming on a 6.2 inch screen, the trade off would be stupid.

but that won't stop people from making fun of it.

sure.
so you made up your own price point, ridiculed it and ignored the modern tech in there?

The rumour is that they do. I highly doubt the Wii U will have 1080p games and the Switch won't.
