Well, did my part, subbed to NYT and Washington Post. Thinking of donations.

I never do this type of this stuff but i've had it with this crap. They gonna try and shut off the media when the heat gets too hot. No access if there isn't acceptance.

I did a 15$ a month deal at times and 9.99 at Post. Once i figure out more of the devastation next year will donate to institutions that's relevant with my reduced tax earnings, if that even still exists.

A Gaffer compiled the list of donations one should consider making mentioned in Last Week Tonight:

I'd consider PP and the NRDC as high priority, considering they want out of the Paris agreement and judges will probably gut Roe v. Wade.

And if you want even more: Progressive Organizations that Need Your Support, Now More Than Ever, in Trump's America

the NRDC, on the donation site it says you do a monthly donation, for whatever reason if i need to cancel how do i do that? Their site doesnt seem to have a sign-in system.

I did a one-time $200 donation yesterday. Click on the donate button and you'll see? It's the default.

Hard for me to want to support the media after they royally fucked that election.

I did donate to trans line after that thread about them needing more phone operators because their phones were ringing off the hook after the election.

It's very good to stay informed. You should subscribe to a local news outlet as well. NYT and WaPo will probably figure it out, the local papers are the ones that are totally disappearing.

But this is not "doing your part". This is no kind of pressure or scrutiny, this is consumption. Staying informed is the barest minimum of civic duty. Let's not conflate spending money with being engaged.

The TV media were primarily the ones that fucked it all up. The print media are the ones being used for sources by the TV media, doing the actual source work. TV media just spins it or doesnt use it effectively.

Also just donated to NRDC

I set up a recurring donation with Planned Parenthood. I don't have a job and I don't live in the US so that's close to the extent of what I can do on this front. It's also my birthday on Saturday and I've been telling people to donate to them in lieu of giving me gifts.

Basically, the point of this post is that I think you should donate to Planned Parenthood. They're going to need all the help they can get.

Not sure if nyt and washington post won't fail covering Trump. They already didn't call bannon a white nationalist and rumor has it that the editor decided against putting it in the headline.(unconfirmed just a scholar with a friend who works there)

The NYTimes shamelessly taking the bait on Comey's letter to Congress was disgraceful. Won't ever forgive them for that.

I've been a little weary of NYT lately, calling white nationalism everything but what it actually is (alt-right, hard-right nationalist). A lot of the media has already started normalizing Trump, so it's slim pickings out here.

You guys are warming up my heart. I'm glad you guys care.

Check and see if your employer does matching gifts. Mine did so with the Southern Poverty Law Center, and I was very happy to set a recurring match. They've been on the front line against hate groups for decades, and we're going to need all the help we can get to hold the line for pluralism over the next few years.

Sure, but print media is already not calling a white nationalist what he is, so...

Set up a monthly donation to ACLU and PP last week. Just a very small amount for now, but hope to increase it once I finish grad school next spring.

Thinking about donating to a few of these especially PP. Hope they accept less than $5 a month...don't got a lot to spare but want to make a difference.

Wait, what happened with news outlets??

You remember how games media wouldn't call Gamergate a misogynistic hate movement?

Yeah this is what's happening with news outlets not calling a white supremacist a white supremacist

Mainstream media aren't equipped to report on this to the extent that it's needed. They'll normalize and whitewash the fascism

What is happening to the New York Times and Washington Post?

Can't billionaire mega-capitalist Jeff Bezos pay for the Washington Post to operate?

I might set up small monthly donations to the ACLU. Their straightforward message about protecting basic civil liberties resonates.

I mean, you're not wrong, but I did it because of the work David Fahrenthold was doing over at the Washington Post. I wanted to send a message that I was supporting his work, so I subscribed to the Post.

Mother Jones says hi.

If you want investigative, muck raking journalism, Mother Jones is where it's at.

They were the ones that helped bring the 47% comment to light in 2012, and they consistently do a great job covering stories few do (Shane Bauer has been on a tear lately). NYT is still worth supporting for the breadth and depth of their coverage, and while WaPo is more narrow focused, they've shown renewed vigor since Bezos' takeover.

Subbed to the NYT once for a class in college and they literally never leave me alone.

Also I got the paper for way longer than I paid for too which is nice I suppose.

I like this from Mother Jones. Straight and to the point. What happened to emailgate?

It's funny how all of that email noise has gotten quiet.

The bad thing about Mother Jones though is that their agenda gets in the way of objectivity. If I wanted reporting that's guaranteed to reinforce my world view, I wouldn't be much better than the jackasses watching Fox.

They're not hurting for funds though. If you're looking for organizations that need your real support, look elsewhere.

That's hilarious. Thought that there was more article, but nope. That's it. And it says all it has to say or what's needed to be said.

If you like extremely long articles, check out this NYT article from earlier this year which I think should probably win a Pulitzer:

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/02/t...uld-i-hit-reply-all-asking-to-be-removed.html

And yes, they did publish it in their actual print copy of the paper:

Incredible! lol I will admit you had me fooled. I'm thinking there was a dissertation on the other side of that link. Icing on the cake is that they published it.

I'll be setting up donations to the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, NRDC, Southern Poverty Law Center, and maybe Sierra Club, and switch off between each of these every month. I want to spread some money around, but doing all of them on a monthly basis might be more than I can handle - these things add up!

We subbed to Jacobin, New Republic, The Nation and Washington Post, to cover a broad range of far left to center perspectives and news coverage and are doing monthly donations to Trans Lifeline and United We Dream (an immigration advocacy group.)

I subbed to the NY Times and donated to NRDC. I won't donate every month but will try to give as much as I can in a year. Maybe $35 every 3 months.

I am more passionate about climate change as thats going to not just affect us, but the rest of the world. I am going to try and stay informed a bit more on politics now. I really hope if the republicans try to back out of the climate deal, they will face some serious backlash from other countries to hopefully some of their base as well. Shit is serious.

The NYT times has on the frontpage a whole section showing all the shit Bannon has done and quotes of people calling him a white nationalist. I mean sure, they are doing so to compare him to Reince Priebus but its not like their trying to hide the guy is a piece of shit.

It's been really bizarre to me how much people have been patting themselves on the back by buying a newspaper subscription instead of donating to a charity that helps a cause they care about.
