With one more month in office, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) just vetoed a bill that will have devastating consequences for prisoners long after he is gone. This week, he doomed countless pregnant women and people with mental illness to indefinite solitary confinement, calling legislation that would end their isolation “[irresponsible]” and “breathtaking” while ignoring research that likens the practice to torture.

On Monday, the outgoing governor vetoed a bill passed by the legislature in October that banned solitary for pregnant women and prisoners suffering from mental health problems. The bill also scaled back isolation for all state prisoners by limiting it to 15 consecutive days in a single month, or 20 days over a two-month period. In short, it effectively ended the common practice of indefinite isolation, which entails 23-hour lock-down in a cell with no outside contact, and which scientists, lawmakers, faith leaders and prison reform advocates agree causes visual and auditory impairment, damages the part of the brain that produces memory and emotion, exacerbates preexisting mental health conditions, and leads to deadly neglect. It also required routine medical check-ups on everyone locked in solitary.

But instead of limiting an inhumane policy, Christie steamrolled the reform effort and accused the state’s Democratic leaders of endangering lives.

“The irresponsibility of this bill, and the resulting peril in which it could place both inmates and corrections officers every day, is truly breathtaking,” he wrote in a scathing message. “This is the danger of legions of Democratic legislators blindly following the rhetoric of prime sponsors who typically legislate by bumper stick slogans.”

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Chris Christie is an absolute piece of shit. I live in Jersey and no one likes him, even conservatives. His favorability rating is 18 percent, the second worst for a NJ governor in the history of the state. He will not be re elected but sadly we still have a few years of his bull shit. Fuck him.

He's termed out, he can't be re-elected (without skipping a term) anyway.

He's a shitbag, a royal shitbag.

It's such a fucking shame he can't run again so the entire state can spend months punishing him.

NJ Voter here - I hope he rots, and I hope the Feds punish him for all of his crimes.

I can't help but laugh at what I just read in the OP. I know it's terrible and insensitive for me to laugh at this, but the following sequence of events just makes Christie out to be like a devil. What an irredeemable jerk he is.

Here is a description of the bill:

...a bill passed by the legislature in October that banned solitary for pregnant women and prisoners suffering from mental health problems. The bill also scaled back isolation for all state prisoners by limiting it to 15 consecutive days in a single month, or 20 days over a two-month period. It also required routine medical check-ups on everyone locked in solitary.

and Chris Christie's reaction to the bill is:

“The irresponsibility of this bill, and the resulting peril in which it could place both inmates and corrections officers every day, is truly breathtaking,”

Christie is such a piece of shit. Like not being in Solitary Confinement indefinitely means they will be roaming the prison halls shanking guards. They could still be confined to a cell just not one that is meant to drive people mad. How it hasn't been ruled cruel and unusual punishment is beyond me.

It may be a little selfish
and slightly exaggerrated
, but the first thought that came to my mind when Trump got elected was that this shitbag would get away with his crimes.

Fucking scum, it is known that solidarity confinement is torture and he ignored all the facts with a message that didn't make any sense.

He's coming out hard like that because he's still kissing Trump's behind and trying to prove himself so he can hopefully get a job in the White House.

Seriously. Is it not possible to have a single occupant cell that has human interaction with people in other cells? This seems very easy to solve.

How did they get him in the first place? I'm curious

The previous Dems in the Statehouse left plenty to be desired. Christie sucks, but it was no real shock he was elected.

Also, I had read somewhere else that he was citing some federal policy that made this legislation redundant. Of course being the asshole bag of wind he is, he might as well fan the flames a little while he's at it and take it another direction.

Not to get off topic, but the gas tax is what's going to give Guadagno more of a shot than expected when Christie leaves office. She was already "against" it, the people hate it, and she'll use that to distance herself from him and be the more moderate voice. Calling it now.

Agreed in part. Although, the gas tax is a necessary evil to some extent. We as a state have not invested in infrastructure in god knows how many years. The tunnel is going to be a massive project that will likely start under the supervision of the next governor. Hopefully there will be federal funding otherwise I doubt anyone pulls the trigger on a $20 Billion dollar project. They will probably do nothing until the fucken thing collapses. It is mind boggling to me that officials refuse to acknowledge this massive transportation issue/crisis that is about to come to roost in the next 5 years.

And I agree here as well. Maybe I'm just being overly cynical, but I can see Guadagno running on something like "You hate this gas tax!! Fuck the gas tax!! And while we're at it, fuck taxes altogether!!" and trying to win as a single-issue candidate.

Explaining that we need infrastructure improvements takes way more than 140 characters.

Corzine was personally disliked, his toll road plan was unpopular (a big issue in Jersey), and he was perceived as corrupt. Christie beat him narrowly. And then Christie got re-elected because Democrats ran a token candidate against him and he still enjoyed decent personal popularity during his first term.

Im going to play devils advocate. Without solitary confinement what do you do to inmates that are causing trouble, actively harming others and being disruptive in general?

Corzine on the heels of McGreevey didn't do the Dems any favors either.

Democrats run hugely unpopular candidate head first into Republican nominee full of piss and vinegar renowned for "telling it like it is", leading the GOP nominee to narrowly carry an area typically thought to be solidly blue.

I have the strangest feeling of deja vu.

You find another way to punish them.

Especially if it is a prisoner who already has an existing mental illness and may be causing problems because of it.

I'm disgusted that this man is still in office. As soon as his term is up, NJ becomes a better place. I just hope that a similar bill is drawn up in the future.

Christie should be the one in jail...
