Persona series ships 6.9 million copies, Sega talks about their new business model

Hopefully by the time Persona 6 is a thing, it won't take seven fucking months to release the English localised version after Japan. Sega should interfere and make that localisation process as fast as possible.

Ah yes, sega are known for the fast localisations of text heavy games, after all.

if you guys really wanna sleuth something out try figuring out what those 28 "Megami Tensei" series editions refer to:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Megami_Tensei_video_games

Are MegaTen (SMT) in name and surely are included:

Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei
Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II
Kyūyaku Megami Tensei
Shin Megami Tensei
Shin Megami Tensei 2
Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
Shin Megami Tensei 4
Shin Megami Tensei 4 Apocalypse

9 games.

MegaTen spin-off in names:

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner
Shin Megami Tensei if

2 games.

Well this is going to be difficult to know. It would better if they recognize what is the main series and the spin-offs/derivated series.

How so? I'd think the guys running operations for the various Sega arcade centers would be the best choice of existing staff to have skill sets that would translate best to their resort operations.

I was just making a dumb joke. 😬

But now I'm imagining Paradise Casino as a Japanese version of Westworld with Sega palm trees and blue skies, and yakuza fights around every corner.

Shortsighted, but I'm not surprised. A day one Persona 5 port would make bank.

Well apparently in Sega's vision range at the moment, Xbox would make more bank for JRPGs than PC.

I'm still laughing me bloody arse off thinking about Azure Revolution and it's been six hours.

68 editions for the Ryuu ga Gotoku series? o_O

Let's see, 1, 2, 3, Kenzan, 4, Dead Souls, 5, Ishin PS3, Ishin PS4, 0 PS3, 0 PS4, Kiwami PS3, Kiwami PS4, 6. 1&2 HD PS3, 1&2 HD WiiU, Kurohyou 1 & 2 vita...

nah, even if I count a "classics" or "gold" edition of all of the above I still don't get even close to the 68 figure...WTH?

Jesus Persona has almost done as much total sales as SMT has done.

I expect P5 to be their best selling title globally by a landslide for sure.

I guess the Megami Tensei series there is including only the mainline "Megami Tensei" and "Shin Megami Tensei" titles, but counting ports separately. Using the list from wikipedia, it's a perfect match with the 28 "editions" mentioned there.

And another thing. What a weird set of icons.

Washing machine, dreamcast 2 controller with cable coming out of the vmu, phone with weird aspect ratio, claw machine and teddybear watching tv show?

Are there mobile versions? Spin offs? Card games maybe? :/

I have P5 and Yakuza 0 pre ordered and I'm very excited for Sonic Mania and Sonic Project 2017 if it's like Generations so they have some support from me this year.

I'm alright with Yakuza games being only released digitally in the west if that's the most profitable decision; I just hope we keep getting them over here in general.

Given how well it sells, it's a little surprising we don't see more Persona-style RPGs. Other than Caligula & Mind Zero, I can't think of any.

Cyber Sleuth heavily borrowed a lot of stylistic and gameplay aspects from SMT/Persona. I actually would call it a SMT game in a digimon skin

I thought that for a moment, but then I noticed that some of the sales counts specifically say pachislot machine on them, while others don't, with no obvious relation to any of the icons. Everything about this sheet is confusing.
It says what the icons mean at the top right.

yup, same here. still got 2 Business Edition copies pre-ordered on amazon for Y0, im still fighting the good fight

I think they have a companion app/minigame for Yakuza 6, but apart from that, I am not aware of other Ryuu ga Gotoku-branded mobile games...

Yeah, me too. Sega is having a good year.

It probably takes a leap of faith for a development house to build a game with a strict time limit and where scheduling your personal life is half the game. I reckon the safer route is to just to keep the pokemon+dungeon crawling aspects, at which point you're simply copying pokemon/SMT and not Persona per se.

Crazy how much traction Persona has gained over the past decade. I'd definitely double dip on the older titles if they brought them to PC.

Can't wait to read this later! The cover style of this annual report is offputting, though. Console game sales are a tiny sliver of revenue for SegaSammy. Why the Persona mention in the title, OP?

And yeah... Persona 5 will sell a million in its 1st year in the West. BELIEVE!
Very very very very unlikely.

This is a very bad idea.

Europe where? I hope they'll sell each and every one of those 7 million copies - schoolbag ed pre-ordered - but Sega would shift more stock if they stopped treating us EFIGS as shit on their shoes when it comes to anything other than PC Football sims.

Also Puyo Puyo on a CSH? Fucking finally Sega. Don't leave that sweet Puyo Puyo Tetris western cash on the table.

Persona has enough characters across all their games to make a sick mobile game.

Granblue combat with the Persona element twist + Persona Q artstyle + event dungeons + character and Persona gacha = $$$$$$$$$$

Does this mean that they are taking staff away from teams like the Yakuza team and putting them to work on small digital games?
Yes, though "small" isn't necessarily true given the direction of digital games.

I imagine PSO2 is 60+ people for example.

This is a very bad idea.
I believe the point isn't to "rush" the localization, but rather to get the localization process happening at a much earlier point in development so that there isn't a 7-month delay. I don't see how that would be a bad idea

This is what I meant.

At this year's E3, Sony interviewed the localisation directer of Atlus USA during their live stream and she knew shockingly very little about P5 - the fanbase was more informed. That was a red flag to me that the company must have only just started the localisation process in earnest around that time (they had the initial February 14, 2017 release date announced like that weekend before). And this is probably part of the reason for the delay to April.
