Is RE 7 looking good?

Simple question really. I avoid marketing and trailers for almost all games. Generally the threads for such games as well.

This is a game i dont really want spoiled on, so ive only tried the demo. Thats it.
Ive noticed a ton of threads on marketing material and new game details.

Whats the hype at right now? Exciting? Mild? I have a guy comes to me at work all the time tellling me how amazing this game looks.

Can you guys give me a spoiler free update? Any info on if vr will be the real deal for it?

Played the final demo yesterday. Yes, yes it is. Screens show all the things we've been asking for. My hype is pretty high.

Almost every preview has been incredibly positive.

A bunch of RE fans think it's the worst thing ever.

It's my second most anticipated game of 2017. It looks awesome.

It sounds amazing, almost dreamlike. It's pooling all the best parts of the classics with their own modern tech spin like the Baker Family being advanced forms of Nemesis and instead of being randomly generated, are AI driven entities that wander levels potentially creating new routes to get around dynamically. The weapon mixing from RE3 is back with more combinations and complexity, the atmosphere sounds incredible, the title makes sense once again since RE4.

So, I'm the person who usually makes RE7 topics because I'm very excited personally for it. But I'll try to give an objective answer.

Preview wise, the game has been doing excellently. Recently a number of press media outlets got to play 4-5 hours of RE7, and all of them were incredibly positive. Some went as far to say it was not only good but one of their favorite gaming experiences of the year, some saying if the rest of the game is as good as the 4-5 hours they played it'll be an easy 10/10 (like literally what they said, that's not me paraphrasing a review score statement in), a serious GOTY contender if the rest of the game is as good as the chunk they played, and that it's the first Resident Evil in a long time not chasing other game's tails and really comes out on its own.

However, there's a lot of people more skeptical still. Many don't like the first-person view, many don't think it looks like Resident Evil, there's many action fans who are upset that RE7 has seemingly ditched them, some people think the demo was dull and don't want an RE7 like the demo, some think the game looks boring to them or lacking what they like about the RE games from what they've seen. Capcom have also been apparently holding off showing us most of the game, which has some anxious or the full game or think they're hiding something, or hoping what's not been show is in their taste, etc. So there's been a lot of skepticism as well.

Others, which include myself in this camp, are interested, excited, or highly anticipating. Since this is the field I'm in, I'll speak more subjectively than objectively, but I think RE7 has the potential to be something really special. I've thought this for a while, it's not just another first-person horror game chasing the indie titles like many think it is in my opinion (but I play more of these indie first-person horror games than most so I might have a better eye for it and experience with the genre than most), and I think they're tailoring an interesting Resident Evil experience that pulls from the series past, classic horror, modern horror, and its own unique spins. And I and I know others are getting more excited for it as more news and bits come out.

I think in some ways RE7 has an uphill battle to face, and I think in actuality many are taking a, "wait and see," approach. But I think it's good news all the people who played a good chunk of the game are glowing about it, and I think RE7 has the potential to be great. Given I don't form my actual opinion until I've played and beaten a game.

Demo was very light on what is the actual game, and outside of a few elements I found it disappointing as a RE game.

That being said, the recent previews and footage are incredible. Everyone who has played it has said it's very much a RE game through-and-through, and a great one to rival REmake and RE4 if the 4-5 hours they went through are any indication.

So all-in-all, the game is looking to turn out very well. I just hope the story and lore elements don't let me down.

Jeff Bakalar talked about it on Giant Beastcast this week, he was very impressed.

Used to listen to Giant Bomb often, yet haven't listened to the Beastcast crew. I'll have to make time for it if not just to hear why he felt that way about it.

You played the demo and you don't know if you like it or not?

I played the first version but was under the impression it was more of a tech thing. Not like the real game.

Am i mistaken and the game will play same as demo?

Didnt listen to the beastcast yet. Look forward to jeffs impressions

You played the demo? Did you like it or not?! That should be enough to base a good opinion on. I mean... it should do a whole lot better then watching compressed vids or reading interviews. If the demo didn't strike your fancy, don't buy it :)

The demo's been updated to better illustrate what to expect of the final game. It still doesn't spoil anything so give it another go.

Any links to recent footage?

There's no music since this was made for B-Roll footage for websites, but can see a a good chunk of footage from segments of the 3-5 hours media played here:

It will still be first person.

Some elements will be similar. Supplies will still be more natural looking instead of shiny/highlighted/bat-signaling. The valve puzzle and getting keys will be typical fare, though there are some more involved ones. Nothing like the secret puzzle though. Moulded (part of the update) will probably be the same, though easier to handle. VHS tapes will still be in, but are optional.

However, lots of elements are missing that will make the gameplay flow quite different.

These include:

*Crafting
*Save rooms (Ink ribbons/Tapes for limited saves on Madhouse difficulty)
*Item boxes
*Herbs
*Shop
*"Item vision" via pills that highlight items and enemies for a few seconds
*Different sub enemies
*Boss fights
*Pursuing A.I. at certain parts
*Wide range of weapons in melee, firearms, and explosives

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
It's absolutely terrifying in VR. This game is going to claim lives.

I wasn't expecting much at all from this game (especially given the growing pains that other high profile Japanese studios like SE, Konami and Team ICO have experienced this gen), but the preview buzz in Duskgolem's new thread has me genuinely pumped.

By far the best experience I have had with VR and absolutely incredible in its own right.

RE is the return of the franchise for me.

The closer it gets, the better I feel about it.

I think it is looking good for sure. I also think it's cool that Capcom took a risk in mixing it up so much. They must have really believed in the game.

more like in paper its good...

the articles and previews from websites have glowing reviews of the demos they played but from gameplay vids and trailer perspective... imo its underwhelming

Is this game completely playable in VR? Or is it just a side portion?

Completely playable from start to end, and more so you can switch from VR mode on and off on the fly, can switch from the pause menu. So can play segments in VR, and then go non-VR for other segments, can play it completely in VR, completely out of VR, etc.

I hope the puzzles aren't ridiculous like P.T. where you have to listen to weird baby noises and move a certain way to not die

If you're more of a RE action fan, you'll probably have severe reservations and/or "another amnesia outlast clone. Pewdiepie game"

If you're more of a survival horror fan, this'll probably be right up your alley, if previews are to believed.

Personally, most anticipated game of 2017. If it sucks, at least they tried and we won't get another AAA horror game for a while.

All of it .

Fuck me, I'm gonna die.

This is a huge deal! Wouldn't this be the first major AAA game that is completely playable in VR? Sony should be promoting the fuck out of it!

The problem here is that very few elements of the gameplay are present in the demo, unlike those for 5 and 6 (and possibly 3 and 4, though they were missing some such as crafting and Ashley respectively).

Sadly, it seems Capcom was more eager to try and go the P.T. route in marketing, taking none of the right lessons from it while not selling the game they actually made. The last update helps, but it is severely lacking in what we have recently seen and been told.

Starts at 1:05 if you want to jump in to that segment.

Thanks, though I'll probably listen to the whole thing to familiarize myself with the Beastcrew.
Should not be 1st person. P.T. ripoff bandwagon jump.

The only P.T. ripoff present are elements of the demo, and that's mostly the obtuse puzzle that could be done in the final update. RE7 was first person prior to P.T., nor is P.T., or Amnesia, or Outlast to be the first or only games that do FPH.

I hope the puzzles aren't ridiculous like P.T. where you have to listen to weird baby noises and move a certain way to not die

That seems to just be a Beginning Hour thing with the dummy finger puzzle. If they have something like that at all in RE7, it'll just be one instance and not be a part of progression.

i was really down on it when it was first shown off, but i've had a huge change of heart after seeing and hearing more about it and am 120% on board with this one.
as my favorite games in the series are both the remake and bio4 it's disappointing that every thread about this game tends to come down to an 'us vs them' debate about the supposed binary nature of the existing games, but i have a lot of respect to see them have so much faith in their vision for this one instead of trying to be all things for all people. it has to be doing something very right for the amount of positive impressions we've been reading.

for a more literal answer to the question, the the visuals are incredible, especially on pro - not a jagged edge in sight, amazing scene composition and color usage, just the right amount of chromatic aberration ... i am absolutely in love with the way this game looks. :)

there is 0% chance that this will be the case. maybe as a hidden easter egg or something, as in the demo, but in the main scenario? absolutely not. the only thing this has in common with PT is that it's a first person horror game.

It is, it's actually part of the reason why I think RE7 might do better in sales than some think. It is the first big PSVR title and full-fledged game designed will full VR support at launch. It's also the first really big game to come out for PSVR, and as PSVR has been a success (apparently it's sold over 500,000 units in Japan alone, and getting into the millions worldwide), RE7 is probably going to benefit a lot from being in the right place at the right time.

Oh good, I've been on a media blackout but I kept hearing people refer to it as a P.T. ripoff. Glad that isn't the case and that the comparison is merely surface level.

Looks like a good game but not like Resident Evil

these kind of posts feel really vacuous given the series' history of ditching and restoring so many elements on game to game basis. depending on how someone looks at it it could also be seen as the most faithful game to the series' title in over a decade.

I'll never understand why so many people were hyped on Silent Hills - every scrap of info indicated it would be first person - but are shitting on Resident Evil 7. If the demo is any indication it will feel like a more realistic version of Remake (still elaborate layers of puzzles, but they feel more grounded in reality instead of being in a cartoon supervillain's mansion) and RE0, but in first person. IMO horror games are just scarier and more immersive in FPV. And it STILL feels like RE, it hasn't turned into a FPS or anything.

Well it's not like Silent Hill has ever been particularly similar to Resident Evil. SH games are scary, and not particularly respected for their combat, so a first-person exploration thing makes a fair bit of sense. But Resident Evil has been an action series with light horror and adventure elements for more than a decade at this point, and it was never especially strong on horror or adventure in the first place. (Remake might be an exception with the scares, but that was nearly fifteen years ago.) You have a scary mood series versus an action mechanics series, so obviously people are going to feel differently about this kind of evolution.

Wat. Resident Evil's reputation was built on the horror/adventure style, though. I mean, that's kinda the through-line of the whole series (haven't played 6 though, which seems like the only straight-up action game). RE1, RE2, RE3, RE:CV, REmake, RE0, even RE4 = all very much horror games with adventure/exploration/puzzle-solving gameplay (or in the case of RE4, simply feeling like you are going on a bombastic adventure).

One thing I might add is that Resident Evil 3 and Silent Hill 1 released at the same time. I do think Silent Hill has stronger horror elements than RE, but one does have to remember Resident Evil kind of crafted the survival-horror formula all others would follow and branch off from, even before Silent Hill 1 & Fatal Frame 1 released for example, we already had RE1-3.

REmake was one of the only titles Capcom made after other big horror games entered the ring that had a horror focus, really. RE7 is a bit interesting to me since it's the first real attempt at horror head-on since REmake and now they have a lot of horror games in the ring with them.

I just think it's sometimes important to remember that while I agree SH1 is 'scarier', and that it develops things in a more refined matter, RE was never really competing with SH, SH was competing with RE. Resident Evil simply never really had a good CHANCE to compete with Silent Hill outside of REmake.

That's not a simple question to answer. It depends on who you are asking.

To some people it looks amazing while to others it doesn't look that hot. I'm mostly leaning toward the latter group. And in case anyone is wondering, I've been an RE fan since RE3 and have played every main entry (except RE2) and a lot of spin-off/side entries.

I've enjoy most of my time with the series, but this one just doesn't seem to be for me. I'm super excited about a possible Rev 3 and REmake 2, though.
