I think I spend most of my time in Batman threads talking about how the media under discussion doesn't fit my ideal of Batman, so I thought it'd be fun to see what everyone's personal "perfect" Batman character and story would be. I joked with my boyfriend that I'm the only one who cares enough to answer all these questions but you can prove me wrong! Skip to the bottom for condensed questionnaire!

There are about 100 questions in total. There's also a tl;dr version with just eleven questions at the bottom of the post if you'd rather do that. To be more concise, you can just omit questions where your answer is no. :p

I'm focusing on Bruce Wayne for those of you who will answer Dick Grayson or Terry or whoever else. Those would require a different set of questions each! I know for myself that my personal canon for Batman takes on what I consider are the best elements of many different stories so I've incorporated stuff from a lot of sources that might not mix depending on how you answer.

There will obviously be spoilers for: mostly pre New-52 comics, Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, live-action movies, Arkham Asylum games, and the Telltale games.

I tried to make the questions reflect some sort of canon somewhere. I debated putting citations for each question but then I'd never get this shit done. Some of them are rather superfluous but look, if I can't ask these types of questions here, I can't ask them anywhere. :( Story arc questions are heavily geared towards the first few years for the sake of brevity and since most of the iterations never get past that part.

"Never said I wasn't a hypocrite."
Keaton suit, TAS voice, Nolan realism, Batfleck reckless abandon toward public safety.

Jesus Christ, you thought about this a lot, didn't you?

In all seriousness, I like Keaton or even Kilmer's Bruce, prefer Bale as Batman(with either Begins or Returns suit) and love the Returns Batmobile.
I also liked Burton's Gotham City. It actually looked, err...gothic.
Then get the animated series people to write the fucking thing and Danny Elfman to make the soundtrack.

Not being a comic book guy I realize the reason i have such fondness for comic book movies has to do directly with the cartoons. Batman, Superman and Spider man after school cartoons and XMen Saturday morning cartoon. So yeah I that depiction of Batman is my perfect one.

Jesus Christ, you thought about this a lot, didn't you?

Yall don't know about Pau and Batman huh?

Animated Batman.

Best part about him is that he actually got caught slippin in the first season. He GREW into the ultimate badass over the course of the show.

No, sorry.

I find so much wrong with the DCAU Batman as much as I enjoy it. Hence the questions. :p
*Raises eyebrow*
By wrong, you mean to ask why all adaptations since can't match how good it was, right?

Unless the movie shits the bed, which I don't think it will, this will be the best Batman since TAS. With ease. The Batman we deserve.

Switch Back 9

a lot of my threads involve me fucking up somehow. Perhaps I'm a moron?
I feel bad for the OP putting so much thought and effort into their post only to have everyone just re-post the BTAS picture haha.

Animated series version, no question. Now if we're talking best not-batman batman, then my answer would be John Reese from Person of Interest:

I mean, he doesn't even have all his kids for heaven's sake.

He gets with Babs which is weird.

He starts off A+ but by the New Batman Adventures becomes too cold for my liking.

He ruins his relationships with Dick, Tim, and Babs. (And Selina although that's more implied than anything.)

I still appreciate the arc Bruce gets, but my perfect Batman is closer to the comics.

Op. That question you asked in the real pic thread. Yes, the answer was yes. No body is going to bother answering this. I am sorry.

Kudos for anyone even attempting the long version =P

What is the nature of the setting? (Universe with other superheroes, just Batman, realistic, campy, etc.)
I don't really care. Maybe a mix ?
Like superheroes existing makes it even more impressive that Batman is one of the leaders of the justice league.
Neither too campy and too serious.
My joker needs to be campy as hell to constrast with a serious batman

What are Bruce's skills, his proficiency in each, and their focus in the stories?
World's Greatest De-fucking-tective.
He can be a ninja, but he needs to be SHERLOCK HOLMES AS A NINJA.

How clear is the division between Bruce Wayne and Batman in Bruce's psyche?
Almost none. Batman is the main persona and Batman is sill in standby while Bruce is out there doing social stuff.

What rules does Batman follow in his crusade and what his emotional response to it?
I like the no killing/no gun rule. He hates that arkham will release them after some time and they will probably have to fight again. But he secretly likes to punch villains in new ways.

What is Bruce's relationship to his villains like?
Criminal scum to most. I am not a fan of Catwoman dating him, but she can try. Batman's only relationship is with justice and the hammer of justice is unisex.

What is Bruce's relationship to other superheroes like?
They fear the shit out of him. Most are betting money that he has SOME invisible power.
He HAS to, right ?

Is Bruce a father?
A shitty loving loved one.
Think the Winchesters.

Who is part of the Batfamily, if it exists?
Alfred, Nightwing, a girl Robin and Batwoman.
Batman thinks she should be renamed Batgirl.

What is Bruce's character arc/development throughout the story?
Minimal.

Does Bruce have a significant other?
JUSTICE. And Alfred

How does Bruce die? (Or how does the story end?)
Out of exaustion, fighting a random thug. He is quickly replaced by Nightwing and nobody notices.

Is Batman ultimately a hero or positive figure? Does he generally succeed in his mission?
A force of nature. He succeed partially. Better than doing nothing, worst than using his fortune to fix gotham social issues.

My perfect Batman is Adam West. I haven't been able to get into the character as much after being exposed to that show as a kid, just not much of a fan of the serious side.

It was expected it. I do wonder if anyone else in the world would enjoy answering something like this though!

I got some positive responses in there! Okay, like three. :p

You know I'm all about the BatDad. Pretty sure like 1/5th of my posts here are about BatDad.

I'll answer the questions and stuff in depth once it's not 1AM and I'm tired lol.

Well, I'm not going to answer all of THAT. Sorry that you went through the trouble of writing it all out. I'm not going to be an asshole and just post a picture either though. I don't think people ever realize, even outside of this thread, how inconsiderate that is. Even if your perfect batman has been captured perfectly (which, imo, means that person must lack some serious imaginations. There can ALWAYS be improvements), they still need to add some discussion points.

One thing that has always appealed to me about Batman is that his is a tragic story, one where he is forever seeking happiness and one where he'll never get it. Because if he is happy, satisfied with his life, then something just feels off to me. If he has successfully moved on from his parents death, there is just no fundamental reason to be Batman anymore, atleast as far as his character goes for me.

This, however, doesn't mean angsty batman. It means Batman with real emotional problems that aren't stuff you look up to him for. It means you pity him a bit. But he does have moments of contentment, real connections. I don't know if I can describe it in a way that a person without depression can understand, but he just can't maintain his contentment the way other heroes can. And it's not what he spends every waking moment ruminating on either. It's just a major part of his life. But also idealism. Because one needs idealism to be Batman. So far, Synder has struck a good balance of this, with Batman having faith in people while still encountering dark shit that makes him linger on the nature of people.

His relationship with people around him should change as he goes on. Batman at the start should not have the same relationship with his villains and friends he has at the beginning. How that is would have to be fleshed out in writing, but I just want dynamics to it.

I definitely think other superheroes should exist in the world. His relationship with Superman in particular is a major cornerstone of his character.

That's all I got for now.

I don't know enough to answer half the questions :|

It's weird even though I've mostly had all the non comics for exposure I don't feel like 100% satisfied with any of those versions. Animated is definitely closest but I don't think I cared for how they handled his sidekicks(I actually care more about dick and Barbara than Bruce from different things I've seen them in) and I don't think he should be with wonder woman. I do like that he's way more of a detective than any of the live action stuff has him.
Oh also I don't really think the idea of him being mentally ill or Bruce and batman being as split as them(I mostly remember that in the Nolan movies) often describing it is any good

Would address more questions if not on phone

This is why you're one of my favorite gaffers.

Hard to make fanfictions if Bruce is in an asexual relationship with punching bad guys xD

Joking aside, what you don't agree ?
Surprisingly I don't write fanfiction but if I did it would be about Bruce as a dad and hanging out with his children buying them ice cream.

As for what I don't agree with, well, mostly the Batfamily stuff, the Batman/Bruce divide, his character development, and how effective he is with Gotham.

This was actually timely, as I was going through the recent Telltale game as my own personal take on Bruce.
That's what gave me the idea actually!
