The one thing we can confirm is that Platinum will never work with Microsoft again.

I don't know about that. If MS wanted to fund another game, I'm sure they'd sign on the dotted line. You don't stop working with a company because they cancelled a project you were working on. If the game was progressing into a finished product or at the very least, showed potential, MS wouldn't just kill it. They'd release it. It's probably not in a state that warrants putting more resources into it which means the blame can be placed on Platinum since they're not delivering what MS wanted and paid them for.

I never really understood the premise behind Scalebound. But I knew that if anyone could hit it out of the park it would be PlatinumGames.

My take on all this, and I've been seeing this for a while, is that Microsoft is transitioning all their games to the 'live service' model.

Daniel Ahmad ‏@ZhugeEX
Basically Microsoft want to have their games emulate what Minecraft has been able to do.
Long lifecycle, large user base, Increased spend.

Daniel Ahmad ‏@ZhugeEX
Microsoft's future direction is about being able to offer the Xbox games and live services on multiple devices that run Windows 10.

I believe Microsoft is stupid enough to go through with this.

Picture does not include TLOU PT2, Death Stranding, God of War. Safe to say, they won't get cancelled.
Why don't you edit the picture to make your (misguided and frankly tasteless) point, then? There are plenty of places where this image can be used as a basis for discussion instead of a tool to derail an existing one.

On topic, tragic news. I hope Kamiya is doing better than what hearsay and rumors are suggesting. The dude's put out some gems.

Yet, here we are bemoaning how terrible Microsoft is to cancel a project that wasn't working out. Did Sony not have to gut an expensive project at SSM that wasn't working out? Obviously, this isn't a 1-to-1 situation as Playstation 4 is in an enviable position from both a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd party viewpoint, but the principle remains the same. Projects get cancelled, and sometimes, they need too.
It is absolutely not a 1 to 1 situation, not just because PS4 is in the lead, but because Sony didn't show off/announce that expensive SSM project to the public. It is absolutely not the same thing. MS is making a habit of doing this over and over again. Hype up/reveal big AAA exclusive titles to the public, pitching them as essential parts of their upcoming lineups only to end up cancelling them and not following through on it. Sony's only notable thing like this this gen that I can think of has been for Rime which is an indie title that has only been shown at their gamescom conferences and not touted as an essential part/pillar of their upcoming exclusive lineup.

Almost like the Switch.

To be fair, Nintendo hasn't had the chance to announce their launch lineup (they will this week), and to be even fairer, even before looking at said lineup I can tell you that lineup will be better than MS's lineup for the same Spring 2017 timeframe.

I don't blame them entirely for this, obviously, but damn Platinum has fallen from the God-tier they were at with Bayonetta and Vanquish a few short years ago. Korea, Transformers, TMNT, ugh...

Now Scalebound cancellation, which was clearly at least partly informed by the sloppy, messy gameplay they had put together for major presentations, etc.

I prefer the Platinum of few, excellent games.

Honestly, MS has been a disaster this gen. I'm enjoying my Xbox One but I keep getting the feeling it should have been so much more.

First tragedy, then farce.
Damn.

It must have been absolute junk to cancel this late.

this is really, really disappointing. It was one of 3 games I had circled as an Xbox exclusive to buy this year.

All evidence points towards there being problems on both ends. Neither is "innocent", and at the end of the day it sucks, as we miss out on the game and likely many people will lose their jobs over it.
Most definitely. I just didn't want to spell out every possibility in that post. I hope everyone comes out OK, hell there will be people in MS on the chopping block for this too. Hopefully everyone lands on their feet.

Guys, he's quoting another tweet (everything after the RT). And in his usual troll self, he's saying "the state of the game is better than the state of your life." This tweet is proof of nothing.
Specially since the tweet is from 2015, I doubt there were any serious talk about cancellation back then.

I don't quite understand how Platinum stays afloat.

Their best games are commercial flops, and their commercial successes (success may be too strong of a word) are budget titles. Then this shit?

How are they still around? Thank fuck they are, but...how?!

A bad game in development got cancelled is how this looks. Happens all the time. Why is this thread 67 pages? its not anything new in game development that troubled games are cancelled. Even Platinum can misfire, cough Korra cough TMNT cough.

Amazing how a cancellation brings out the best in all of us gamers.

We don't have and hard facts and we have fan boys coming in here lighting the usual fires.

I stick by my original opinion, this game was in development hell and much like Fable was a bomb waiting to happen. I think it was smart of them to pull the plug with Scorpio around the corner. They need shining titles to showcase alongside. Would you have preferred them to stay silent for years like other publishers do? I'm not defending the cancellation, I think it was justified though just not this late in development.

Honestly as someone who adored the 360 I kinda agree, though I think the Wii was the worst to me on a personal level. But the Xbox One is right behind it.

Its certainly the biggest disappointment ever in terms of consoles for me.

It depends if you judge it by exclusives. If you own a PC or PS4, then yeah it's pretty clearly among the worst mainstream consoles ever made. But if you play only on XBox I would think you would be fairly happy with it.

It will always have Forza though, can't really beat that.

Can I pop in the game and play THE FULL game without having to worry for running out of install space? Or attaching other HDDs? Or installing new HDDs?

No?
Then It's an installbox, and I might as well start up my PC and install it there. I know, like I said, that isn't a popular opinion, but it bugs me. I know now you'll start attacking me over it (and maybe I should not mention it buy I'm seriously pissed about the cancellation), but the fact that even PS4 with it's streamlined install (try going outside the beaten path and you still need to wait for it to install, but very often games have you play the first part in 30 seconds... clever..but still... install).. it still is a shitty install box.

and yes my mood is foul.

Come on Nintendo, do what you did with Bayonetta... fund the development and save this game as a Switch Exclusive. Make it glorious and show those losers at MS what true winning is like.

The requirement of installs is an unfortunate side effect of Blu Ray discs and their slow read speeds... It's either installations or abysmal loading times. Both Sony and MS decided that full installations were the best resolution, with how large games have gotten today.

Kinect almost useless, no new games use it
Few exclusives
Appealing games getting canceled...

What's the point of buying an xbone?

For me this has always been the question. When the system launched, I was interested in Titanfall... but had a PC ready and able to run it so I bought it from Origin. I was interested in Sunset Overdrive, and eventually got to play it with a friend's XBO but then didn't want to pick it up again. Then Windows 10 happened along with the announcement of play anywhere, basically announcing all of their future XBO exclusives would be on PC. So instead of buying an XBO, I set up a W10 dual boot where I've played ReCore and Forza Horizon 3 (buggy though it may be). If I want to play Gears 4, I can play it there too. Crackdown 3 has been a game I've been looking forward to but that game is apparently in development hell. If/when it comes out, it probably will use the Play Anywhere model too.

Why bother with the hardware at this point? Especially as Microsoft continues to lose exclusive developers? I wish I could say I have some hope for Sea of Thieves, but I'm skeptical because Rare has been used as their Kinect and avatar dev for way too long and I'm not sure what market there is for yet another MMO. Edit: I wish I could also sit here and say I'm optimistic about Crackdown 3 but that game has been marketed under several different revisions since E3 2014. Fully destructible, power of the cloud, multiplayer, blah blah blah.

Wow didn't see that coming ... I wasn't excited with the latest trailer they released but I still would have purchased it cause I know Platinum would have delivered some awesome gameplay moments. To me it seemed like it was trying to hard to make the main character to much like a wannabe Dante but with a cringe factor ( those headphones.....) I wanna say hopefully someone comes in to save the game but I don't know if its worth even saving. Bummer. I hope Platinum doesn't get affected by this too much financially.

A portion of GAF is just going to go with its all MS fault, and Kamiya and Platinum are totally innocent.

Its annoying but we basically just have to accept that's the way its going to go

This is quite the post, wow. Just going to comment and say that the reason games install onto the hard drive rather than play from the disc is to decrease load times and protect the disc drive.

I know the reason, slow diskdrives.... I just don't like it. It is why I"m so happy with the Switch being cards :). It is one of my main "HYPER!" points about it. That and couch MP and Nintendo exclusives.

Still I pray to the gaming gods that Nintendo will pick this one up for Switch, won't happen... but I really looked forward to this game. I might even have bought an xbox for this game. But noooopppeee. MS truly want a "Halo, Gears of Wars and Forza" Box.

A bad game in development got cancelled is how this looks. Happens all the time. Why is this thread 67 pages? its not anything new in game development that troubled games are cancelled. Even Platinum can misfire, cough Korra cough TMNT cough.

It's about Xbox's future prospects/software lineup.

I was hoping that by asking you to actually quote and re-read the post you're complaining about, you'd realize that nobody actually portbegged to begin with, and maybe even admit to it.
so I'll just quote it for you!

there's no portbegging here.

Since apparently you can't do it yourself I'm going to explain what he means by that.

First Sammy Samusu is an obvious Nintendo fanboy as evidenced by these posts:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=227540769&highlight=#post227540769

Yass get them. 🔫
(cheering because Nintendo C&D's a Rom Hack)

I think that's established now.

Now the first part of his post is to make it seems like he doesn't care about the game so that port begging allegation don't happen. Then he post his Nintendo saviour fantasy which is the port begging part.

Now why would he think that Nintendo would save this project when Microsoft owns the IP, it wasn't looking like it would be an hit as usual with P* and it seems to be in development hell?

The only logical reason is that he wants it to happen since nothing shows that Nintendo has any interest in it.

Salt and MS hate.

That being said though. If they're games as a service thing is to be believed I'm sticking with PlayStation and grabbing a switch.

A lot of people are being quick to throw this on Platinum, but on one hand we have a developer that has consistently delivered dozens of games on time (including one in a little under two months).

On the other:

- reports of how Microsoft dealt with the scope and budget of Phantom Dust
- co-op being added to Scalebound
- Kamiya signaling dissatisfaction around that time
- Microsoft having a track record of pushing towards unecessary game modes, microtransactions, lotteries and loot boxes
- Microsoft having a problematic recent history with third party contracted developers

Erase the names from the above -- what would you think likely happened?

How did Kamiya suddenly lose his capability of delivering focused, well-regarded games and instead, by fault of his own team, fell into a bloated development hell and had his game cancelled?

It just plain doesn't sound as likely. This sounds very consistent with the post-mortem on Phantom Dust that Kotaku published. My guess is that Microsoft stretched the scope of the project, and Platinum crumbled under a lack of budget and time.

Nah, it was all Kamiya and Platinum's fault. They have a vast history of incompetence, unlike Microsoft. How can we blame Phil for this? *IF* there was any interference, it was certainly this guy pulling the strings from far away somehow:

That makes a lot of sense, and is completely consistent with what we have seen recently across nearly all their games.

What a bummer.

Brace for impact.

Crackdown 3 next.
It's been too long since we've heard of the power of the cloud.

I can see the press release now.

"Due to issues with our cloud service we have stopped development on Crackdown 3. However, no clouds means a bright future for XBOX."
