Well this is incredibly disappointing news. All the best to PlatinumGames going forward.

How about Bayonetta 3? One can dream...

A damn 70 page thread for Scalebound, in a couple hours. Where was any of this pent up interest during the last 3 years .

Nobody gave a shit before it was canceled.
Don't worry, nobody will give a shit tomorrow, when "gaming drama of the day" has been replaced by new gaming drama.

If I had to guess I'd bet a lot of the dysfunction was with MS wanting the game as a Scorpio launch title and telling them to make it happen by any means necessary and Kamiya saying "not happening".

My take on all this, and I've been seeing this for a while, is that Microsoft is transitioning all their games to the 'live service' model.

Daniel Ahmad ‏@ZhugeEX
Basically Microsoft want to have their games emulate what Minecraft has been able to do.
Long lifecycle, large user base, Increased spend.

Well certainly hope this isn't true.

Microsoft's future direction is about being able to offer the Xbox games and live services on multiple devices that run Windows 10.

It's an unfortunate direction. Made the right pick at the beginning of the gen. PS4 = Singleplayer, for now at least. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if PC and Nintendo are the only bastions for SP by next generation. AAA Single player is doomed.

Shark Cards for everyone!!!

Shame. Wonderul 101 and this, is a clear downward slide.
You're gonna get a lot of "that's bait"-type responses, but I have to agree to an extent. TW101 was pretty good, but it's the only one of Kamiya's games that I haven't loved unequivocally. And while I was still looking forward to Scalebound, man, what they showed at E3 this past year looked rough. At no point did it ever look like it was fun to play, which again, is shocking for a Kamiya game.

Hmm, very mixed reactions.
Anyway, yall better buy 4 copies of Nier to make sure Platinum survives and that I get that DoD4 game a la Platinum as well.

Off topic: I'm always kinda shocked to see how quickly some posts really gain traction. Also

you say this is as if xbox was ever actually there to begin with.
Pretty much. After 360, the console was DOA in Japan to begin with.

Hoping Platinum Games will be able to bounce back with greater games in due time. They are a great dev team, and it would truly suck if this setback did lasting damage.

Damn :( I was looking forward to this game... Good luck to the devs affected by this, and hopefully the game can live on in the future.

Cuphead is not being published by MS and it's also coming to Steam.

Confused as to why I keep seeing that game brought up.
Same reason why Nier Automata keeps being hyped up as a PS4 exclusive, console exclusivity counts this gen, anything for the sake of list wars. ¬_¬

Nobody gave a shit before it was canceled.

This is surprising accurate. :/

Cuphead is the next to get canceled. Just watch.

Cuphead's taking so long because they retooled the game from a boss rush to more of a platformer. Those hand-drawn sprites aren't easy to make. With that being said I wouldn't be surprised to see this game (or Below, remember Below) to pull a Rime and end up on other platforms.

Deep Down inside of me, it doesnt hurt my feeling. It look seriously average. Was once hype, it can rest in piece.

I don't understand the scorpio mentions...

Isn't the Scorpio supposed to be the Pro version of X1?

Meaning: All Scorpio games will be playable on X1. So I don't know why Scorpio would resurrect this game, or any other game...
The scorpio thing is a meme making fun of user Statham that went into the PS4 sales thread and wrote just that

"Scorpio"

The problem is not every game is minecraft or animal crossing.

Not very many types of IP really support the "live service" model, other than crafting, tomogotchi type games, and maaaybe you could make a survival type game work but I don't think people will consistently keep their character going in a survival type setting. There's only so much zombie killing you can do.

Mmos as well but not everyone is in to that.

You're essentially cutting out a large part of the gaming audience who are primarily interested in single player narrative driven or just solid single player gameplay if narrative is lacking. If all games become live service time and $ sucks I'm probably out.

If MS isn't happy selling $60 single player games then I'm not happy with MS, and they will realize a lot of people agree.

MS seems to be losing sight of the fact that platforms with large diverse libraries tend to have the most long-term success. Games-as-service tentpoles can be a huge boon, but some of that money needs to get fed into producing smaller niche games. A JRPG may not move a lot of units by itself but it brings different consumers to the table. Same with strategy games, fighting games, visual novels, whatever.

I'm not a Minecraft/Halo/Forza gamer, so I start to wonder if I need an XBox after all. Scalebound never looked great to me, but at least it showed that Microsoft was trying to keep things interesting and I would have been happy to be proven wrong about it. Now its just another example of MS axing something that looked different so they can double down on their core-competencies.

Yikes.

That seemed like one of the incoming heavy hitters for the platform, even though I had no interest.

Hasn't there been recent press on this game?

I really hope that they are still open to working with other Japanese developers for second party titles in the future. As much as we give them heat for essentially making their first party studios Halo, Gears, and Forza factories, they've funded a good number of new ip's then gen. It would be a shame if that slowed down.

Did people expect Scalebound to do GTA V numbers or something? Like it looked bad from the jump, completely uninteresting and just blech. I'm sad it was cancelled for the people involved, but *shrug* it ain't like this was gonna help Microsoft a ton

Everything they showed of Scalebound looked kind of a mess.
I bet it was even more so behind the scenes.

This is probably for the best.

I was interested in it but I never viewed it as a heavy hitter. Didn't expect the game to help sell a decent amount of consoles whenever it would have released.

It's already coming to PC.

Cuphead and Below is pretty much confirmed for PC(Steam) you know.

Goodbye Japan.

Xbox has been trying for 15 years to get a respectable market share in Japan, and it has never been more than a super niche item. It would definitely be in the best interest of Microsoft to leave the market entirely, and the few Xbox fans living in Japan could be advised to import.

That sucks to hear. I'm really hoping Microsoft pulls it back in their favor in terms of exclusives, if only to keep competition up between Sony and Microsoft.

Screw all of this, I'm only worried about Kamiya's health. It seems he must had a nervous/stress breakdown or something. Hope he is ok. He hasn't tweeted anything in more than a week either : /

Dreams dying... Capcom have been on a slow decline for a while. I don't know if they'll ever hit Konami levels of shit but they're a bit of a mess right now. I hope RE7 is a return to form.

The best case scenario is them pulling a Sega and let Nintendo commission an Okami 2, but that's probably a pipe dream at this point. :|

EVERY Platinum game bombs commercially. They make games for a niche crowd and that's all they need to do.
It's only a bomb if you drastically miss sales expectations. Not everything needs to sell 5m to be a financial success for the creators.
