NeoGAF Anime of the Year 2016 - Voting Thread

Not open for further replies.
1. Mob Psycho 100 ; Beautiful animation and visuals, great action, and compelling characters and development. This deserves every bit of praise it's gotten.
2. Konosuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! ; A hilarious parody of the video game isekai genre. They're all jerks, but it's hilarious watching them all interact and try to accomplish different goals.
3. Ajin: Demi-Human ; The CGI can take some getting used to, but the story is still very interesting to follow. The characters aren't always rootable, but it was intriguing to see what they would do next.
4. My Hero Academia ; A fun shounen, with a lot of rootable and interesting characters. I watched this before reading the manga, and while I definitely prefer the manga, the anime was pretty good too.
5. Orange ; I thought this was beautiful. Loved watching this.
6. Assassination Classroom ; Not as good as the first season, but I still enjoyed watching the story wrap up.
7. Magical Girl Raising Project ; There were definitely some flaws in the storytelling, but I was entertained week to week.
8. Drifters ; Watching all of the historical figures go at it was fun, and while I didn't think it was that funny, the humor didn't ruin it for me like it did for some others.
9. Occultic;Nine ; This was kind of a mess, and the ending made it feel more like an extended ad for the upcoming VN, but I was intrigued in the mystery. Reading the LN enhanced my appreciation for the series.
10. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress ; The front half is pretty good, second half not as much. There were some decent action sequences.

x. Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy ; This was the biggest let down, but I won't deny that it was fun to watch and discuss this weekly with other Danganronpa fans.

1. Mob Psycho 100; Would have been better if it was done in the style of Koya's commercials. Least offensive of the shows I've watched.

2. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable; Pacing of the adaption feels broken. Mediocre middle act and a final third that struggles to exude the same slick execution of the first cour.

3. Tanaka-kun is Always Listless;

4. Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju; Boring lethargic rakugo melodrama, I prefer the second season so far.

5. Ninja Girl & Samurai Master/Nobunaga no Shinobi; The short runtime fails to leave any lasting comedic or educational impact.

6. Miss Bernard said.; Abuse of book references as a crutch tricks viewers into thinking it has value.

7. To Be Hero; Too crass to be truly poignant.

8. Kuromukuro; CG mecha just suck.

9. Sound! Euphonium S2; Much weaker story structure and more melodramatic focus than the first season, what a waste.

10. The Great Passage; Dull protagonist with surface level message fails to penetrate any deeper. Nishioka is best boy.

Honorable Mentions:

x. Kiznaiver; So painful to watch it disappeared from my memory.

x. Yuri!!! on Ice; I hear you like well developed characters. This doesn't have any.

x. Haikyu!!; Formulaic sports shounen with a bunch of team variation is still regular ass shounen.

x. Pokémon: Sun & Moon; Wacky by the numbers kids shit.

x. Tonkatsu DJ Agetarō; Ugly amateurish visuals don't charm.

x. Space Patrol Luluco; This is just mega dumb self-cannibalizing Imaishit.

x. Concrete Revolutio: Superhuman Phantasmagoria - The Last Song; Time skipping made by brain skip.

x. Flip Flappers; Veered so hard from what it should have been. Pretty Nonsense.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Movie/OVA

1. Your Name; Didn't catch In this Corner of the World or A Silent Voice this year which would surely have been better. Don't watch this.

2. Kizumonogatari I: Tekketsu-hen; Nisio Isin's verbal diarrhea kept to a minimum doesn't make up for the disjointedness and baggage of these two films.

3. Kizumonogatari II: Nekketsu-hen; See above but no Aninari flames.

4. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin III; Casval Char being a boss but the presence of CG mecha still sucks so it's down here.

5. Boruto: Naruto the Movie; When will this franchise milking ever stop. Absent father Miyazaki would be proud.

Honorable Mentions:

x. Harmony; Cynical garbage, will the real Takashi Nakamura please stand up.

x. Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt; 2D robots rock, too bad about everything else. Lack of a musical episode killed it.

x. Garo: Divine Flame; An excuse for a metric ton of noisy unmemorable fight scenes.

x. The Boy and the Beast; Unearned climaxes and relationships. Hosoda please.

Special Mention/The Real Number 1

Miss Hokusai; I voted for this last year. This was better than anything else I saw in the list.

1. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu ; Great drama presented with the art form of a bygone era. Truly a standout in storytelling, with interesting characters and enthralling rakugo performances
2. Konosuba ; Funniest anime I saw this year. The misadventures of Kazuma and co. succeeded in bringing out humor on a consistent week-to-week basis.
3. Mob Psycho 100; Great animation, as well as characters that are better realized than most other action shows
4. Alderamin ; Military anime is one of my favorite genres ever since I watched Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and while Alderamin is unable to reach anywhere near that level, it is still a half-decent attempt. Too bad it ended on a read-the-LN ending.
5. ReLIFE ; A school slice-of-life that I somehow found to be more interesting than most, probably due to the older main character.
6. Re:Zero ; Really had high hopes for Re:Zero, but I found it less engaging as the series wore on. Subaru just became too abrasive of a character for me I guess.
7. Sweetness and Lightning ; Sweet fluffy slice-of-life that was decent at what it meant to do.
8. 91 Days ; Interesting mafia story set in prohibition-era Detroit. Too bad the characters, especially Nero, acted really stupidly in ways that continuously broke my suspension of disbelief.

Movies

1. Girls und Panzer der Film ; Tank goodness. What more needs to be said?

While looking back to make this list I now realise just how many shows there were that I thoroughly enjoyed, 2016 had such a good line up of shows.

TV Series

0u7Hgzk.png

1. Sweetness and Lightning; - This show surprised me completely with it's relatable, emotion packed characters, the swinning story beats from serious real life moments to lets make a curry! This show not only dragged me along for the highs and the lows of the Inuzuka household but it even got me to be more experimental with my cooking at home. I'll also just leave this here https://r.kyaa.sg/nbjjge.webm

M3z8srW.png

2. Space Patrol Luluco; - Trigger is undoubtedly my favourite studio and this particular art style of theirs is one of my favourite of all time, that aside, Luluco is a fun, non-stop comedy with several cameos from various other Trigger animations.

oLEcbfb.png

3. KonoSuba; - Simply the funniest show of 2016. Great characters, great gags and plenty of EXPLOSIONS!

nVrQk7N.png

4. Izetta: The Last Witch; - I'm a real sucker for any fantasy world war one era media. The plot was rather dull and pretty predictable for the most part but chuck in some beautiful character art and amazing battle sequences pretty much guaranteed this show to be in my top 10.

JzkYSCu.png

5. Kiznaiver; - Trigger knocking it out the park again with some amazing art, an interesting plot that sadly starts to waver towards the end but is carried through by the wonderful mishmash of characters.

Fg4m0Bl.png

6. Dagashi Kashi; - Sweets, boobs and Saya.

PkVTSA9.png

7. Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World; - Episode 15 end credits was probably the greatest ending of the whole year. The protagonist is very punchable and the show will get you routing for his demise with each episode. Ferris on the other hand is a national treasure.

8. Flip Flappers; -

Quick and dirty since I have a cold and feel like shit.

1. Bungou Stray Dogs; great cast and character development, I love Igarashi's direction, etc.

2. Mob Psycho 100; awesome animation, just a blast to watch.

3. Tanaka-kun is Always Listless: one of the more charming comedy/SoL shows I've seen in recent years.

4. Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju; have mixed feelings on the events leading up to Sukeroku's death but still one of the best this year.

TV:

1. Mob Psycho 100 ; There hasn't been such a strong marriage of virtuoso animation, creative direction, and textured character writing since Ping Pong won this award in 2014. In adapting ONE's serialized manga, Bones goes beyond Madhouse's excellent work on One Punch Man, bringing the author's world of colorful characters to vibrant life with incredible consistency and panache. It would be one thing if it just had the best battles of the year, but the show goes above and beyond by grounding its drama in a deeply human story about learning to be yourself and living with other people. Few others could create such an incisive critique of the might-makes-right world of shounen battles without sacrificing the virtues of hard work and friendship that make those stories as universally powerful as they are.

2. Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu ; Mamoru Hatakeyama has truly come into his own as a director. Turning a story about rakugo into an anime was always going to be a tough task, adapting tales told by a solitary storyteller sitting on a cushion into dynamic and exciting television. The show more than succeeds here. In those scenes you can see the traits that make the show great: a precise command of mood, the use of well-paced and carefully chosen camera cuts to create energy or build tension, a keen eye for visual symbolism and montage. Like one of protagonist Yakumo's sensual tales, the viewer is drawn deeper and deeper into the show's story of two rival storytellers seeking a path for their art, until one cannot escape.

3. Thunderbolt Fantasy ; Maybe it's not anime, but it's still a great time. Famed writer Urobuchi Gen brings this exciting martial arts adventure to life with the help of Taiwanese puppets and ridiculous CG effects. The final result is a delight, packed with larger-than-life characters that one can't help but root for. Their conflicts and arguments call to mind those of the legendary heroes of Fate/Zero, but the overall tone is less dour nihilism and more epic adventure. Completely satisfying.

4. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable ; This is the best Jojo has ever been. The nicer production values are a plus, but the real delight comes from the show's fresh structure, trading Stardust Crusaders' plodding world-spanning quest for a more intimate look at a single town and its quirky inhabitants. By shrinking the stakes and the real estate, Jojo has become more unpredictable. Enemies stick around and become friends, characters show up again in unexpected ways, the cast grows and gets more time to develop. Even the arc's overall villain manages to one-up things again. It's easy to see how this work became such a phenomenon.

5. Kuromukuro ; The best mecha show in ages. Kuromukuro works so well because it keeps the focus on its characters, and maintains a consistent thematic message throughout about the search for one's meaning and motivation as one gets older. It juggles some fun, light comedy (that makes great use of Kennosuke's samurai past) with higher-stakes battles without undermining either. The mech designs themselves might not be great, but the fights are structured well, with the choreography often selling the vibe of a samurai duel. And I think it nailed a brave ending, subverting expectations while still staying true to the show's overall message. It's too bad the Netflix connection blunted its exposure.

6. Tonkatsu DJ Agetaro ; Pure joy. The premise is nuts (a kid whose family runs a tonkatsu shop gets inspired to be a DJ when he sees the similarities between the professions), but the show feels full of personality, from its unique art style to its groovy soundtrack. It's a good vibe all around.

7. Tanaka-kun is Always Listless ; This comedy stood out to me because of its pacing. As befits its titular character, Tanaka-kun knows how to just let things breathe sometimes. I found it really relaxing because of that. It may sometimes lean a bit hard on similar jokes, but there are some real gems in its cast, particularly Echizen and Miyano. And it has some of the funniest interstitials I've seen in any show ever.

8. Concrete Revolutio: The Last Song ; Perhaps too ambitious for its own good, this show unfortunately rushes through its final episodes in order to wrap all things up. But god, I love it for trying. It's still a dense, vibrant love letter to decades of Japanese popular culture, with this season leaning into its message of what it means to find a path when the lines between good and evil get blurred by politics and deception. It made me want to learn more about modern Japanese history.

9. Miss Bernard Said. ; A short anime about the joys of reading, and the equal joys of faking being an expert in something by borrowing the opinions of others. This subject speaks to me on a fundamental level.

10. Erased ; The high-concept premise served as a great hook, aided by some top-notch direction in the show's early episodes. Unfortunately, the plot eventually comes unglued when the show's mystery turns out not to actually be mysterious, culminating in a rather limp ending. Still, I can't deny the show's high points. It wins the Terror in Resonance ”Wasted Potential" award.

Movies (I didn't watch much, unfortunately):

1. Girls und Panzer der Film ; An absolute delight for fans of the series. Sure, the premise may be flimsy, but if you wanted an excuse to watch more massive, thrilling, improbable tank battles, you get all that and more here. It's great to see the cast together again, but the real treat comes in the final hour-long battle, a tense back and forth across a wide area, with each skirmish having an impact on the outcome. The CG tanks are used to great effect, allowing dynamic camera movement and intimate first-person scenes that would be all but impossible otherwise. Real action setpieces like this don't come around in the medium often.

2. Harmony ; The opposite of the movie above. One of the bleakest, most nihilistic works of fiction I've ever experienced, a study in claustrophobia, alienation, and despair, the grim future of a utopian world where the body and mind are controlled for the sake of happiness. I found it completely absorbing, and it left me shell-shocked. I guess it's good at what it does.

Had a hard time ordering this list beyond number 2. Not a great year for amazing IMO with just Rakugo being the only standout classic of the year, but a very strong year for low key good shows in the bread and butter genres of the industry as there was tons of stuff I really enjoyed by didn't make the list.

A ton lot of good drama this year including stuff that that didn't quite make my list like Kizanaiver, Re Life, The Great passage, March Comes Like a Lion, 91 days, Battery and Orange.

Also a very strong year for shouneny shows in general. Haiku, Gintama and Jojo delivering as always, very strong adaptations of Mob, Hero academia, Bungou Stray Dogs (Bones on fire this year), Food Wars, Drifters and Aijin. Even the Isekia shows were actually good this year with Grimgar, Konosuba, and Re Zero.

Also a lot of laid back slice of life shows that seemed good, but I was never actually motivated to get very far into like Sweetness & Lightning, Amachu, Poco's Udon World and Flying Witch.

On the more negative side of things it was a pretty barren year for original anime in general with very few being made at all. Kiznaiver, 91 days and Yuri on Ice being the only notable ones. Kabenari and Izetta are maybe worth watching, but beyond your'e somehow just left with Mayoiga.

1. Alderamin on the Sky ; The only show this year I made sure to watch as soon as it became available for streaming. I like that the super intelligent and charismatic protagonist still felt grounded and realistic compared to other similar characters. The relationship between the main characters was also very interesting.
2. Flying Witch ; At first I was not too into this show, but by the end it became my favorite SoL of the year. Great to watch after a long day. So relaxing.
3. Mob Psycho 100 ; Amazing animation and an interesting cast of characters. Reigen is great.
4. Thunderbolt Fantasy ; I was surprised at how engaging the story was. The puppet fights were a spectacle.
5. WWW.WAGNARIA!! ; While much more reliant on shipping than the original series, I found it to be consistently funny.
6. Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans ; While I enjoyed the start of the first season of Build Fighters, this has been my favorite TV Gundam series in at least a decade. I also think it has avoided the second season curse well so far.
7. KonoSuba ; Watching a group of jackasses adventure will never not be funny.
8. Re:ZERO ; I mainly watched it to keep up with the conversation as it was definitely the most talked about show of the year. It kept me entertained and I enjoyed watching how they would get out of their horrible predicaments.
9. Macross Delta ; I loved the first half and even bought the music CD. Forgetting the second half even happened is for the best.
10. Kiznaiver ; I love the art style and it was an interesting drama that just could not stick the landing.

This top 4 is damn tough, and I'd just like to preface it by saying any one of the top 4 could be on top based on my mood.

1. Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

I can't in good conscience put anything above Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu this year. The direction is on point, the writing is great, the vocal performances are spellbinding, especially during the actual rakugo scenes. Marvelous all around.

2. Haikyuu

This was going to be my number one until Rakugo Shinjuu came and ruined everything. I just fucking love everything about Haikyuu; the characters, the animation, the soundtrack. You know it's a good sports series when you have a different favourite character every episode.

3. Mob Psycho 100

Told y'all it was better than OPM. Pretty much a perfect adaptation. Amazing animation every episode, and Takahiro Sakurai's Reigen is perfect.

4. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable

The best JoJo's ever been. It's just a shame David Productions couldn't completely keep up, resulting in a few less-than-stellar episode. That said, I think they made up for that somewhat with some smart adapting, namely the July 15th episodes. Kira remains the best villain of the year (and next year, and the one after that, and the one after that...).

5. Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou

I just really wanted to put this on the list. It's great.

TV:
1. Kuromukuro
Biggest surprise this year for me, as PA Works and modern mecha anime sounds like a recipe for disaster. Instead of disaster, I got a nice fish-out-of-water comedy wrapped in a moe samurai man's search for truth and adaptation/assimilation with his environment of lovable characters, wrapped in surprisingly great CG mecha action sequences (sort of a Very Good Anime crunchwrap). Kuromukuro never loses focus on its plot, thematic elements and fun, meaningful character interactions throughout its run which puts it above every other show this year despite my lackluster feelings for the genre as a whole. Kuromukuro is the best.
2. Hibike! Euphonium 2
While I only somewhat enjoyed the first arc of this new season, it's the buildup and wonderful climax of the Kumiko/Asuka relationship that makes me love this season just as much if not a tad bit more than the first. Kumiko does take a step back from the forefront of the show despite still wearing the Main Character moniker, but that just makes the future interactions with Asuka (and eventually her sister) all the more impactful since she learns to be more honest with her feelings rather than passively stand through the drama surrounding the band club. Good band bear Thoraxes has detailed information on how amazing the musical sequences were, so I'll just end it with they were good and seeing my Kumiko blossom into the honest fluff she is at the final episode makes me proud.
3. Brave Witches
It's been three(thousand) years since this spinoff to my favorite anime franchise was announced and I just couldn't not love it. It's production values range from some noticeably terrible editing and CG where previous seasons dared not to put CG, but my love lies elsewhere. Hikari quickly separates herself from the pre-season assumption of being a Yoshika clone by tackling every challenge thrown at her by being literally the Bravest Witch. Compared to Strike Witches, Brave Witches tends to focus on a more solid core cast (Hikari, Nao, Nipa) rather than trying to fit in development of every other character in its large roster, and to its advantage. Hikari and Nao's rivalry and eventual friendship along with Nipa being her first friend in the unit is more organically grown than the parallels from Strike Witches (the Lynne and Perrine relationships) as they're consistently together and encouraging each other whether by the natural hotheadedness of one or the desire to continue striving for more strength of the other. This is what I wanted from another season of Strike Witches and I eagerly await more as I continue to keep the franchise ALIVE AND WELL.
4. Flying Witch
This year's premiere damn good iyashikei/slice of life. Kinda like Kuromukuro, it has a theme of cultural integration with Makoto the witch moving in with her non-witch relatives, which leads to several cozy/funny iyashikei set-pieces that are unique to a show involving the "occult" that you don't often see in the genre, like some cute ghosts in a secret magic cafe and a dog witch. These situations allow a natural way for the non-witch characters to ask questions and for Makoto and other witch characters to provide some sufficent world building.
5. Love Live Sunshine
OG Love Live SUCKS, so I was pleasantly surprised how the same franchise with a bunch of crying non-characters created this cast of good friends being fun with some side-drama that was somehow handled with any elegance. Hanamaru is the best and fluffiest zura.
6. Haikyuu!!: Karasuno Koukou VS Shiratorizawa Gakuen Koukou
LXLbAqT.jpg
6UE7Gq1.jpg

These are two of the few screencaps I took since I couldn't be bothered when I was on the edge of my damn chair for most of it
Haikyuu continues to reign supreme as the best sports anime out there with some of the most edge-of-your-seat moments in the series so far. Hate that there's apparently not much more manga left to adapt since Yuki Hayashi's score is seriously one of the best I've heard since the last thing Hayashi did.
7. Kiznaiver
Trigger proves it can make a good TV anime and Okada proves that she can write a good teen drama without ditching her eccentricities that make her notable as a writer.
8. Macross Delta
girmMzF.jpg
FudJMV1.jpg

Right: me waitin for more Macross Delta
For like 16 weeks this was one of my favorite shows as watching Freyja and Hayate's budding relationship develop while intermingling with the mysteries surrounding Mikumo and the war surrounding the show. Then it got bad and then sometimes good, rest in fuckin peace. At least this has some of the best idol music in any show ever so that was always a pleasure.
9. Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge
Another one of those comfy slice of life shows but with the added excellent comedic tendencies of director Kawatsura Shinya (Non Non Biyori) that helped set it apart from other shows of its ilk last year.
10. Oshiete! Galko-chan
Incredibly crass comedy that shows the developing relationship between teenage girls and their male and female classmates. It's one of the more sincere depictions of a high school class going through puberty and hanging out together that I've seen in anime and that brings a fair amount of sometimes too-relatable humor to the table. Good show, Galko is a good girl.

Films/OVAs
1. Tamayura: Sotsugyou Shashin Part 4 - Ashita
A perfect end to one of my favorite iyashikei series. SatoJun ties up all the loose ends within the other three movies but this one provided the closure Fuu needed to know what she wanted to do in the future and how to best preserve her father's legacy. SatoJun knows iyashikeis and this is one of his best yet.
2. Girls und Panzer der Film
The closest you'll get to Mad Max: Fury Road in anime format without directly making an homage/parody of it. It fully takes advantage of the switch to movie format by having these uninterrupted, incredible and long action set-pieces that tie itself together with the constant interactions between the ensemble cast and the creativity that only Mizushima can bring to something that's already this ridiculously anime.
3. The Anthem of the Heart
ONCE AGAIN Okada can make a good teen drama, just don't put her in dumb meme shows with CRAZY KOOKY CHARACTERS when she can write uncomfortably realistic displays of teenage angst, drama, all that good stuff.

Shows:

1. Mob Psycho 100; this was pretty neat, when it wins this forum's vote people should maybe watch a bit of it. Not that I know what's going to happen like it's being rigged or something.

2. Thunderbolt Fantasy; it turns out that watching anime-puppets anime-disembowel and anime-decapitate each other in anime is pretty anime-fun. The anime-tight, anime-competent anime-script by noted writer of anime Gen Urobuchi helps.

3. Konosuba; I remember thinking it was pretty lame after the first episode and that people just liked it because one of the characters don't wear underwear. I came back to it a few months later and enjoyed it much more. Maybe it got good or maybe I got worse. It's a mystery.

4. Miss Bernard; came for the namedropping, stayed for the surprisingly warm relationship between two of the characters. Their development can't help but be basic due to the length of the episodes (very short), but each vignette is spaced far enough apart that you can substitute downtime out of the show as a passing of time within. Like yeah, that totally works.

Movie:

Nothing i loved, but a few I appreciated.

1. Doukyuusei; it's a short, fluffy movie about two young men falling in love. It's sentimental and fun and there are no roadblocks socially or otherwise in the couples' way. At one point someone comments that it's 'weird,' but not because of their sexuality but because of where the two stand on the social totem pole at their school, one a nerd and the other not. It did make me wonder--I'm so inundated by how suffering accompanies such portrayals that it's become expected, and to be without that suffering is for it to be feel less real, 'sentimental' as I mentioned above. But it doesn't have to be Moonlight; sometimes, two boys kissing on sand can just be two boys kissing on sand, and the upbeat, optimistic nature of the portrayal is worth appreciating.

2. Girls und Panzer Movie; school stuff is whatever and the thin, gimmick-driven characters are getting rather tiresome at this point, but the finest tank battle in animation more than makes up for it.

1. Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju ; A story about storytelling. I admit I have a huge fondness of frame stories, and the setup for this one just works so well, but the rest of the show, from the rakugo performances to the direction to the pacing to the writing are just so good and so well executed, I can't find a single reason to not recommend this.

2. Mob Psycho 100 ; One's crude art style works surprisingly well here, and the variety of art styles and mediums, from digital to charcoal to acrylic, makes it just an extremely interesting show visually. I really do enjoy the manga and One's storytelling, and the anime version just elevates it to a whole different thing.

3. The Great Passage ; A highly technical dictionary show that will teach you more about Japanese corporate life and making dictionaries than you ever wanted to know. Going in I figured this would be far more metaphorical than it was, and although I still kind of wish it had been, I did enjoy the intermix of what metaphor we did get and the more plain, literal look at mixing work and passion.

4. Thunderbolt Fantasy ; One of Urobuchi's better scripts + pure wuxia puppet fun. I mean, anime fun.

5. Yuri!!! on Ice ; This probably doesn't deserve to be this high up here, but I really enjoyed this show while it was airing. While its inability to develop its own themes or cast in any particularly satisfying way made it a bit of a slog at the end, watching the different skating routines was enough to keep me interested for most of it. It's also uniquely one of the few sports shows that stars an almost entirely adult cast of high level professionals.

6. Flying Witch ; It's cute, the music is great, the odd comedy beats work well, and it's just plain relaxing. A perfect show for a rainy night.

7. Space Patrol Luluco ; Trigger's self-addressed love letter, Luluco has all the high energy and randomness that you'd expect. I don't actually particularly like Trigger so the references didn't do much for me, but I found the hyperactive take on a more shoujoish plot to be a refreshing change of pace.

8. Sound! Euphonium 2 ; Whereas Eupho1 focused on band drama, Eupho2 turns its focus to drama where the characters happen to be in band. In a turn of the season, characters no longer fight over chairs or solos, but their intensely personal family or relationship problems. Regardless, it's still Eupho: the art and animation remains pretty despite the backgrounds being blurred to shit, and it might be worth watching just for that alone.

9. Girlish Number ; Another cynical look at the industry and its practices following in the wake of Shirobako and I assume a slew of other shows on the subject, Girlish Number succeeds at being both funny and awkward when it wants to be. Unfortunately, it didn't feel like it succeeded at much else, as the drama often fell flat, and the dissonance between the girls commenting on their own exploitation and then proceeding to ignore it was a little confusing. The backgrounds were kind of ugly too.

10. Battery: The Animation ; A low key, sort of melancholy drama about two boys on their junior high baseball team. The lack of plot direction is probably a large turn off for most people, but the characters actions, their illogicality and often meandering or abruptly cut off dialogue when they're not quite sure how to express themselves, comes off as interesting attempt at realism. Battery's story has been adapted multiple times before into every conceivable medium, but it's interesting to me that the anime adaption is the one that strives so hard to make the characters feel human, even at the sacrifice of everything else. The endings are really pretty though!

x. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure DiU ; I didn't finish this so I wouldn't feel good about voting for it, but DiU is my favorite Jojo arc and the bit of this that I saw certainly did it justice.

x. Tales of Zestiria the X ; I have to give props to the staff for accomplishing a near Herculean task: making a video game plot into a piece of watchable entertainment. The straightforwardness of Zesty's plot and characters (and just how plain bad the writing gets) probably makes it better for the job than most, but as far as adaptions go this shines as an example of how to properly transfer a story between unlike mediums.

Movies:

I'd write about these but now I'm tired and they're also the only anime movies I saw this year. They're both interesting movies told in vignette form and good enough that I'd wholly recommend either of them to anyone interested.

1. Doukyuusei
2. Miss Hokusai

1. Love Live! Sunshine!!; Not the highest rated show, but certainly the highest in term of enjoyment. I love Love Live!
2. Flip Flappers; Severely underrated show. The ending is kinda weak, but that doesn't undermine the amazing first 11 episodes.
3. Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan; Best comedy ever. The only show that managed to make me laugh every episode.
4. Hibike! Euphonium 2; Kinda weak at the beginning but came home strong at the end.
5. Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 3rei!!; Best Fate continues to be the best Fate.
6. Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu; A roller coaster of a show. At its lowest, it's pretty bad, and at its highest, it's superb.
7. Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!; An entertaining take on a common setting.
8. Mob Psycho 100; Pretty good, but the whole package doesn't feel particularly impactful.
9. Yuri!!! on ICE; Best sport show of the year.
10. Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku; Unexpectedly enjoyable. Almost nothing like Madoka, but the few similarities put it under Madoka's shadow, which is unfortunate.

x. 91 days; Good enough for the 11th spot. For the limited time that it had, it feels very complete, and is a good show overall.

Movie/OVA:

1. Kizumonogatari II; SHAFT the movie.
2. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin IV; Best Gundam returns.
3. Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt; Great visual and good story.
4. Kizumonogatari I; Kinda weird at first, but is a good beginning to the story.

TV Series:

1. Thunderbolt Fantasy;
This was Urobuchi in peak form. By that, I mean the script was impeccable. Every bit of dialogue told the audience something about the speaker, whether it was a lack of knowledge or a personal philosophy. In some ways this was an extended version of the Holy Grail episode from Fate/Zero. On top of that, Sawano's score fit the show really well and was less distracting than many of his previous entries.

2. Diamond is Unbreakable;
The first time I felt all the elements in a JoJo series were working in tandem. The art direction and storyboarding were the star elements of the show though, by taking a different direction than previous franchise entries.

3. Haikyuu;
No show got me as consistently as hyped as Haikyuu. Yuuki Hayashi put in the lord's work.

4. Konosuba;
5. Mob Psycho 100;
6. Rakugo;
7. Kuromukuro;
8. Space Patrol Luluco;
9. Kiznaiver;
10. To Be Hero;

Movies:

1. Garo: Divine Flame;
This was a film followup to the first Garo TV series and serves as a rather simplistic but good conclusion. It's largely a showcase for Seong Ho Park and Yuichiro Hayashi to show off their immense animation skills but what ends up stealing the show is the art direction. The backgrounds have more color, detail, and better framing to create striking images present throughout the film. It's an absolutely gorgeous film on every level and constantly oozes style. You know you're going to have a good time when that Jam Project theme kicks in.

2. Patlabor Reboot;
It was good. I'm mostly just putting this in to somewhat fill my movie list.

3. Harmony;
I haven't actually seen this but I'm listing it anyway as I'll probably like it when I get around to seeing it and I can also say it was on my AOTY list.

Honorable Mention:
Shin Godzilla
Prisoners

1. Detective Conan: Darkest Nightmare
For some reason, this is the only anime movie/OVA I watched all year, if I recall. Yeah, definitely should've watched One Piece, Garo, Girls und Panzer, Tamayura, Tantei Opera Milky Holmes, Bakemono no Ko, Patlabor, Mahoutsukai no Yome, etc, in addition. I haven't even seen much of the Detective Conan series, but I did think this movie was pretty fun.

I'd recommend clarity in the vote so it's not just tossed out. Is the bolded your choice among those? Is Luluco actually your #6? etc
