MIC: Overwatch players turn to Reddit to share their stories of Harrassment

Yes because you calling out white straight males in your other posts is perfectly fine right? I love each and everyone equally.. ur posts say otherwise about you; keep spewing more bullshit
Your upset people are spewing bullshit at you?

What about your "positive" solution to ignore and move on? =)

I'm not white nor am I upset. Just find it silly people need to hold a grudge against a particular category of people because they were hurt in the past by that category of people.

So what do you believe is the actual problem that causes this?

That person is overly sensitive and feels the need to base past experiences on one particular group of people (in this case white / straight / male). Instead of digging deeper to fix the problem and realize that not all people in that particular category are that way, They decide to hold a grudge from the anger thats built up within them. Not good for moving forward in life. Its not good to hold onto anger.. but instead just let go and live in the present. Stop living in the past and what happened and who caused it; think about the present that you're living in and that not all people are like those that hurt you.

As long as companies only consider cheating the only reason to permaban this wont stop. Edgy teens feel is cool to be racist, misogynist, homophobe or whatever to get attention and make people sad/angry. Start permabanning and the problem will die fast.

Do you honestly believe that women are the ones threating to rape and kill other women on OW? I'm living in the present and presently there are several male 'gamers' telling a woman in a video game to 'go back to the kitchen'. Sure #NotAllMen or whatever but most of the other men are doing nothing to help change this.

No there are obviously more toxic male gamers than female.. for sure. I have run into several female toxic gamers. If I pick someone such as hanzo in ranked, they troll by picking widow and say "kys". Obviously its not the same, but you get my point. Like I said, the only way this will ever change is if blizzard implements a new system to punish toxic behavior.. which i dont see happening for a long time. So the best we can do is be positive to the rest of the team, and mute the toxic player. I don't know about most people, but I play overwatch to get better at it and rank up, and if someone is getting in the way of that by being toxic, i mute them. Matches are 10 minutes long, and you will likely never see that same individual again (at least on PC since the population is massive). We all have different goals when we play a video game, mine in overwatch was to hit top 500.

Here's an article that might give you some perspective. It's very much related to a larger issue associated with white men in the U.S. but mostly focuses on those under 30. There will continue to be more and more of these studies highlighting what's been brewing under the surface for years so I would equip yourself with some perspective. https://medium.com/@IsaacSimpson/if-trump-is-impeached-it-might-be-the-end-of-america-b7a2243399b7?source=linkShare-17756313f41a-1487608984

Huge companies like blizzard need to be employing staff to monitor this, can understand that small devs don't have resources to do anything about this but huge companies like activision blizzard should be on the front door tackling this otherwise foul mouthed kids grow up thinking it's ok.

I dont need studies. If you go out a restaurant and call out every white straight male in there and tell them they're all assholes, lets just say it wouldn't end well for you. In this case, the person who dislikes white straight males can also be considered a toxic human being as well. I'd equip yourself with some logic.

I am honestly very surprised it's only 25%, isn't that even lower than real life sexual harassment?

At least the last 3-4 pages can serve as a scaled down reenactement as to why nothing was down to curb harrassment online since gaming allowed gamers to contact each other.

This is why you don't voice chat with randoms. It sucks, but its better than hearing their shit during the entire match. Their is no accountability with Blizzard reports. :(

For it to work It needs to be a case by case basis which is not feasible for the huge population OW carries with. I just don't see a better solution than the personal choice of using the available tools within the game to avoid or block unwanted fellows trying to ruin the game for everybody else.

he doesn't need studies, he has the best knowledge

Dont need studies because i don't differentiate people based on their skin color and sexual orientation.. whereas a couple people in this thread clearly hold deep hatred against certain colors. Learn to love each other equally regardless of skin color or like I said you won't make it far in life =/

Off topic, but I just read a quote that reminded me of the points you have been making.

"If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any time." ~Marcus Aurelius

Why are we singling out women? People online are just asses to everyone sometimes. Then when you block and ignore them and never see them again.

I'm a male and i can easily give a bunch of examples of "harassment" of shit people said to me. I just acted like an adult and report and block. I mean nobody ever told me they wanted to lick my donut hole, but I've been called names.

Yup thats an amazing quote, and it applies to a lot of things in life.

When I get harrassed, it's because I did something stupid, not because my voice gives away my gender that's a very big difference.
Think about what this means and what the logical consequences are: that women don't give away their gender anymore, participate less and maybe give up gaming completely. that's very bad and no one could want that.

Amazingly inaccurate. I mean, too bad Marcus Aurelius' quote isn't more widely known, who knew that harassments impact is something you just turn off.

Seems like something someone with not an ounce of empathy would delude themselves into believing. After all, if you can do it, surely everyone else should sack up. Scary sentiment, really.

To be fair, is it any wonder that individuals who pride themselves on achievements and trophies and stamps and leaderboards and accomplishing challenges and "gitting gud" thinks that real life works the same way as a video game and you can just bootstrap your way out of every psychological or emotionally taxing issue regardless of severity?

You do have the power to revoke it though. While I don't accept toxic behavior and seeing as there are no steps in place that Blizzard takes to stop this kind of behavior.. the only option left is yourself and how seriously you take these comments. You can agree or disagree with me, but any strong minded individual would see that point. Then again most people in this thread will disagree due to them discriminating against peoples certain skin colors / sexual orientation.

I think the best moment was when I was plating Plants VS Zombies GardenWarfare and some guy was flying off the handle and all the kids that were playing told him to shut up and that it's just a game...

zdBY6CK.gif

Garden Warfare is probably the only shooter I've played in recent years (on consoles at least) where I haven't encountered any toxicity in voice chat. It's literally just really nice kids having a blast haha.

You could say you "don't see color"...

People who pride themselves on achievements and leaderboards and trophies worked hard to get there. Does it mean they should be toxic towards others? No. Should they pride themselves? Of course they should. The same way people pride themselves when they win trophies in real life. They both worked hard to get there.
You're a good troll, I'll give you that.

Do you honestly think real life is a perfect meritocracy free of bias, privilege, and nepotism, that everyone deserves to be where they are at any given time, that all winners are good people and all losers are bad people, and that skill and hard work is all you need to be top of the pack?

Do you honestly think life is a video game?

I always love people who say 'I'm leaving now! I'm done with the discussion! I'm ending it here!' and then come back after they get their ass blasted by people calling them out. A tale as old as internet forums themselves, even I'm guilty of that in the past.

Ah yes. It's on you if you take harassment seriously, otherwise you're weak-willed. Don't say you, don't accept it, when every post you're writing on the subject is hand waiving it away. Got more quotes for us? Quotes are good, for the strong.

I don't even know what you're on about with your last sentence, but I take it most people who disagree with your astounding masculine wisdom are now racists 'cause one dude thought you were white?

I don't know how anyone could take you seriously after you've proven time and again you don't give a shit about any studies or whatever.
And then psn trophies are like real trophies or some shit.
I'm just wondering what's the next case of the bingo card you're using you're going to use next.

Who said that? No one said losers are bad people, no one said winners good people. I said people who worked hard on a GOAL that they had in mind deserve to value that special ability. Stop putting words into my mouth. Do you know what a goal is? Do you have any goals in life that you achieving? Just because someone is better at something than you, does not make them a better person. Back to my point, anyone who reaches their goal for something (Lets say reach top 500 leader boards in overwatch for example since this thread is about OW) deserve to be proud and value that skill.

I never said PSN trophies. You could win a trophy for winning a tournament for any game. That person should be proud and happy.

Thickest skin

Shouldn't you be discriminating against more types of people since thats all you've done?

And that has to do with harrassement in Overwatch how exactly?

Again good swerve here.
That has nothing to do with the point the other poster had.
Usually on this board trolls can't make it to member.

You're losing the plot on the metaphor, which is that people who are focused on winning are probably not likely to empathize with those who are down on their luck. But hey, easier to gloat about your OW record, amirite?

Shouldn't you be discriminating against more types of people since thats all you've done?

You're not being very positive. =)

It's always fun to see how you're going to take a tiny part of that other post and extract an unrelated point to derail the conversation.

If you're playing competitive mode, then I think 99% of the community is there to gloat about their OW record lol.

Many people do, yes. Not everyone can quote themselves out of feeling awful. Certainly.makes me feel bad sometimes, and I'm a white dude.
At what point can you no longer keep it from ruining your day, is what we should be asking.

When you first response to people sharing their experiences getting harassed while playing online is variations of 'sack up', then you're stuck up your own ass.
