...has to be one of the most beautiful movies ever made.

- Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman are just phenomenal
- The soundtrack is godlike
- The screenplay and pacing is perfect
- After the movie ends....you're so damn happy. You're crying and smiling at the same time.

I just watched it on TV...maybe for 10th time? (maybe more)...It's a movie you can watch again and again... forever and it doesn't get boring.
And it's probably the best movie about friendship and life in general.

Is there anybody on GAF who hasn't seen this movie yet? Do it. NOW.

It's a fantastic film, but there is one moment that bothered me.

It's when Andy
plays the music and everyone in the prison just stands and listens in awe like they have never listened to music before, it's not that amazing of a piece of music either, it just looked weird.

I know it's nitpicking, but that moment felt weird and out of place to me.

It's not that they've never listened to music.
It's that they didn't expect such a thing to happen in such a harsh environment, so they all soaked up that moment and enjoyed it in silence and peace.

Think you might wanna re-watch that scene and listen to Andy's dialogue as he basically explains why that moment felt so special, despite the inmates not understanding that music

“Some birds are not meant to be caged, that's all. Their feathers are too bright, their songs too sweet and wild. So you let them go, or when you open the cage to feed them they somehow fly out past you. And the part of you that knows it was wrong to imprison them in the first place rejoices, but still, the place where you live is that much more drab and empty for their departure.”

So good.

Every time we have one of these threads a bunch of people learn it's an adaptation of a novella by
Stephen King
. Yes that one.

I love it. But there is this weird thing that always comes with it, it is the number one ranked movie on IMDB for some reason. So when I watch or talk about it that is always in the back of my mind.

I understand that, but it just felt a tad unrealistic to me.

I might do that, actually.

You missed the point of the scene and why it works so well.

Yep. One of my favourite movies of all time. Was super surpised when I saw it on TV randomly some years ago and was completely floored by it.

Perfect movie. 10/10. My all time favorite film.

Same. It was I want to say 2004-2005ish when I saw it. I was up raiding on a Saturday night and was flipping through the channel and I saw Morgan Freeman on Lifetime (mustve been 2 am) and thought what the hell is he doing on Lifetime. Sure enough it was the Shawshank Redemption. Watched it all and was floored.

When it started airing a bajillion times a year on cable a long time ago it became millions of people's secret personal favorite movie until there was literally no one left to recommend your secret personal favorite movie to anymore.

People hate this movie? I thought it's a universally praised classic.

Its because its universally praised that some hate it for being 'overated' (its number one on IMDB, so people think its going to be the greatest thing since sliced bread)

Love this movie, such a mix of emotions with a genuine happy ending

So was Red

edit: I'm always surprised by people who think Stephen King is a horror author. He writes a lot of great dramas as well.

He *is* a horror author. Unless you mean you're surprised people think he's *only* a horror author. He's written outside the genre a few times but the vast majority of his extremely prolific career is horror.

Yeah that's what I meant. I forgot the word "only".

The "bird- quote" alone tells so much about friendship...every scene of this movie is amazing. You can pause the movie at any time just to sit there for a few seconds and think about the situation or what the characters just said.
So many great scenes.

Most inmates in a place like that likely never heard music like that before.
In such a hopeless, dreary hellhole like that I don't find it unexpected that it would have such an impact. Who knows how long it had been since some of the guys in there had heard ANY music

it's ridiculously watchable

anytime it's on tv on a lazy Sunday or something it's easy to get sucked in.. Not hard to see its appeal
