Ghost Recon : Wildlands Open Beta Impressions.

Just played an hour with a friend, and I don't know where to start to PRAISE this game. I really don't know where, for real, framerate is poor, bugs everywhere, lack of clarity, you die for no reason cause you leave an invisible area, no bullets so when you come back you're just gonna die again, tutorials all over the place as if we were stupid, collision detection is worse than on some PS1 games, the vehicles are horrible, the AI is sometimes non existent, .... I could go on like this for a while, like the rocks every 2 meters making it impossible to off road, the stamina that transforms you into a snail, the STIFF controls making it almost impossible to aim correctly, the camera that has a delay, the controls that have a delay.... see this list? I can still go on goddamit, the graphics are horrible when we see other open world games released so far, the LOD.... HAPPENS 1 METER IN FRONT OF ME.. my friend and me fall down the same cliff, he dies I don't, we get into a vehicle conveniently parked in front of a base, we can't kill anything because the terrain makes it impossible to shoot too low, the icons are all over the place, it's really distracting, trying to aim while someone's driving is literally impossible, they should have implemented some sort of lock in or soft aim bot, I DON4T KNOWWWW (yes this is a wall of text on purpose, I want you to suffer a bit, to compensate for the hour of torture, funny torture, but torture nonetheless.... I had to go through here)

Dear god Ubisoft...

They are different, but I'm already starting to learn the layout and placement of items and NPCs a few hours in. NPCs in particular. It doesn't mean it's not fun, but it means it's in the player to make the experience different each time.

Even at this stage, I'm trying to think of ways to make repeating missions more appealing. Difficulty changes, trying pistol only etc.

The somewhat static nature of the missions means that's an option, but I'd like the game to do more to lessen my need for that option.

It's an issue with all games, but this had so much scope that it's a shame I'm feeling the same way about it as I do other open world games.

I will give this beta one thing - I had the most hilarious co-op adventure with 3 randoms.

I laughed so hard my stomach hurt.

That being said it wasn't because the game intended me to be laughing.

I'm hoping this game will give way to my SOCOM fix...
At best it will be a rental until further PVP info is revealed.

Can you dodge like roll or something? Feels lacking for a third person shooter imo. Almost all games similar to this have the abilitiybto roll or dodge..

you die for no reason cause you leave an invisible area

You mean when you cross the giant white border on the minimap, the border when which you cross flashes a giant blinking message on the screen telling you exactly what you've done and what you need to do to not die because of it?

Now I know you really wanted a road trip to Chile but that isn't in the game, much less in the beta so you will have to limit your adventure to the two Bolivian territories included in the beta.

tldr; The area isn't invisible, there is a reason. Pay attention next time.

I was only able to play first few mission but here are my impressions:

- Vehicle (cars atleast) controls are horrendous, probably the worst I've experienced.
- Gunplay is satisfactory, pretty similar to what we've seen in other Ubi games like Far Cry etc.
- Stealth is also similar to FC, SC and GRFS, nothing new here.
- Enemy AI is stupid on 2nd hardest difficulty.
- Helicopters seem very attracted to the ground for some reason.
- Performance is unsatisfactory. The game was very choppy and stuttery. I was playing at 1440p with i5 4670k stock, GTX 980ti stock and 8 GB RAM. Even with everything at High and useless post-processing turned off, it was hard to get a constant 60 FPS.

I'll have to play more to see if I want to buy it.

Deleted within an hour of playing it. Compared to the many better options out there, this seems like a bad SOCOM poorly remastered from PS3. The vehicle controls are terrible, the sound is from early 2000s, and the squad controls are simple. Lastly, the AI is functionally retarded. A hot, disappointing mess.

So as lapsed gamer from the original wii era who just got an xbox one (getting a switch to), this was like the first game I got to try the day after I got the console. Looked good in theory but fuck this did not leave a good taste in my mouth. Thankfully I played overwatch as my 2nd game and dont have this "I think i made a mistake" feeling anymore, lol...

One word to sum it all up: jank.

One thing I like is the character iterations are often pretty funny, but they talk too often when playing with a friend over mic.

Great concept, but the game is way too fucking janky. I lasted 3 hours before I uninstalled it

I assume many of the people complaining about this game looking poor, janky, having poor vehicle and gun controls are on console?

The game looks amazing on my PC, plays great, and in my brief time, seemed fun.

I know if my vehicle wasn't able to drive over rocks, and hills that I would have turned it off super fast.

Yes the way the vehicles turn and handle physics could be way better but if I was getting stuck on every hill a day rocks I'd hate it even more.

I'm also glad you can run up hills in the same way.

Dragon age and far cry made me hate paths and mountains way too much. Such time wasters made purposely.

Hoo boy, PC elitism at it's finest.

I'm on PC, game looked phenomenal but it's absolutely clunky as hell and features some pretty poor controls in both vehicles and combat. It's a shame, i can see myself having fun with a more polished version. For example if the game controlled as fluidly as something like say MGS5 I could see myself sinking quite a bit of time into it, but unfortunately it just doesn't feel good to play, it's all very rigid and clunky, combine that with the hilariously janky AI and you have yourself a pretty underwhelming experience.

On pc, the game will occasionally hang up for 5 to 15 seconds, like a hard locked program. Will eventually come back, but that's a bit funky. Maybe a ssd drive install would fix that.

After playing coop on Xbox One for several hours, I did a couple of solo missions on PS4 with HDR.

It's like a different game. HDR made everything look *right*. It's not that the Xbox version looks bad, but the lack of HDR makes everything feel a bit flat in comparison.

I suspect the online play is also affecting controls, since solo on PS4 the game felt smoother and more responsive.

Mine does this, on an SSD.

Welp.

Not sure what to think, it's running in the 60 fps range on mostly high graphical settings. Not really stopping in combat, usually it's traversing by car/helicopter. Maybe it's problems in regional loading?

Not trying to be elitist, I'm just genuinely curious. I haven't played a lot yet, but my initial impression was that it seemed quite impressive, played well, and looked beautiful.

I'm on an SSD, and I still had one long hitch occur. Hopefully that gets ironed out.

Similar to a post above:

On a high-end gaming PC:
- Vehicle (cars atleast) controls are horrendous, probably some of the worst driving mechanics of recent games
- Gunplay is okay, needs polishing on PC, can feel weird or 'janky'
- Enemy AI is not very smart
- Performance is unsatisfactory, overall feels clunky like a console port
- Graphics are okay
- Character creation felt like there were a good amount of options to customize your look, lacking in some areas of course

I'm on PC.
The vehicle physics just don't exist - try driving down a mountain or up a very steep mountain...it's just jarring.
Hell, try even driving at full speed and bumping into a tree.
And everything just feels so janky and weird...

This is the most jankiest ass game I have ever played. It's ridiculous. It's one thing if it's an older game or an asset flip or something, but this is a game with stupid high production values and assets and a huge team and name behind it and it's jank personified.

Same. It's not too frequent, but I'd say every ten minutes or so the game just freezes for 5-15 seconds.

I'm guessing it might be saturating my CPU when loading in new areas? I had a weird issue where my Discord kept cutting out, and it's because this game defaults to High CPU priority. So at certain points, particularly combat, it would choke my CPU so badly that Discord would temporarily die. Forcing the game to run normal priority fixed my Discord problem, though it did drop framerate by maybe 10%.

I'm running the game mostly above 60, it runs okay for me in terms of pure numbers, but this hitching and just general performance feel is disappointing.

I honestly dig the game, some of the goofy co-op situations you can get into are really hilarious. The basic sandbox seems fundamentally well designed and fun, and I like how deadly the AI can be. (I'm even okay with the driving -- it's not amazing, I'd like improvements, but I've played actual driving games with worse handling and feel.) But the game has a very fitful pace. Those highs are excellent, there's just long stretches which are kind of dull, or at least routine. I can't remember the last time I was so torn on a game.

EDIT:
Just going to describe a quick example of good gameplay moments I was talking about. Last night some buddies and I attacked a UNIDAD fortress to interrogate a prisoner. It was kind of a mess, but we succeeded so one guy and me decided to escape in a chopper. We take off (I'm piloting) and we're desperately trying to avoid ground fire, weaving back and forth and trying to get away. Suddenly two UNIDAD choppers are on us, better armed than us, so my friend has to try to shoot them down with his assault rifle while I try to maneuver our helicopter so he has the correct angle to aim at them -- while still dodging all of the enemy fire, of course. It was an absolutely crazy few minutes of gameplay, and it ends with my buddy successfully killing the pilot of one of the enemy helicopters, which proceeds to crash into the other copter, destroying it! We flew off to safety.

Nothing beyond the initial mission goals was scripted here -- I've done this mission multiple times and never seen it play out like that. When everything is basically working this game has a really cool, fun combat sandbox.

The game has poor vehicle and gun controls on PC.

Probably had a lot to do with why this did nothing for me.

I have the same issue on a regular HDD. However I played the closed beta and never had this issue at all.

The game runs stuttery and have the texture loading issue now from time to time in the open beta which is annoying when the CB ran great compared to this.

Having a blast with the beta will pick it up day 1. This is a game you play with friends, I will never play this game solo EVER!

These are my sentiments exactly. Me and my friends pre-ordered this after a 7 hours long continuous play-session last night.

Oooof, I don't think this game is going to review well (by big publisher AAA standards). I'll predict a 70 Metacritic score.

It has quite a few pretty big issues (terrible vehicle handling, horrible writing, boring and lifeless world, etc.)

My biggest bugbear is the enemy AI knowing instantly where you are if you do any tiny thing to alert them. It makes it very hard to correct for mistakes. Though tbf, we were playing on extreme difficulty with no markers or minimap because the game's way too easy otherwise.

Really wish they used Sync Shot from GRFS instead so you can mark 4 and your squad adjusts when you call dibs on a shot a squadmate already has. Felt way more fluid in that game.

Also I have no real preference for hard/soft cover systems but the soft cover system in this game is horrendous. The general movement and gunplay feel really stiff compared to say something like The Division - which also has a way better cover system.

This feels like something I'll pick up like 2 years later after the GOTY bundle is out. I like the idea around the game but playing the beta, the execution feels lacking. Especially when there are other games coming around the bend. Sucks for the devs a bit cause this game is definitely being sent out to die.

I'm still not getting the controls complaints. Feels really smooth to me...

This game just feels really terrible. The controls are messy whereas sometimes when I hit a button it doesn't do what it is supposed to. Like, when I am in combat and try to reload with X for some reason it opens my binoculars are whatever it is, and sometimes pressing B to crouch launches the drone. The vehicle controls are awful and the gun play doesn't feel fun at all. It's actually a lot like I feared it would be from the game-play demo and trailers. From the game-play they showed off I thought it looked like enemies died too quickly and the AI were basically bullet sponges and that is what they basically are.

The graphics look pretty terrible which is weird because the PC version feels super demanding in my opinion. Things like the muzzle flash look terrible and the game just doesn't have a good look to it.
That sounds like a problem on your end rather than with the game.

This hasn't happened to me (or any of my friends) once, and we've played approximately 15h each now so it's definitely not a generalised issue.

It's pretty jank on PC for me too.

Honestly it doesn't feel that much like a big budget AAA game. Feel really underwhelming in term of how polished it is right now.

Can't help but feel this game would feel instantly better just using the controls and game play of Siege in a much smaller open world. (like a small area in a city) with fun objectives and setups.

I am not sure why developers don't see how lost they are with just creating ultra large worlds, it's like they forget what fun or immersion is.

Even if they kept it as is and just used the Siege controls and movement it would still be a lot better with shooting and fun.

JaseC

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
Is this basically a third-person Far Cry? Can it be played solo all the way?

There's no getting around the team aspect as bots fill in for other players, although you may be able to just abandon them if you can order them to stay put or otherwise not follow you.

They cheat, since whenever they are on alert and start searching they will automatically home into you position and "search". Watch Dogs 2 had the same thing and it was hilarious and kind of sad to see it. In this one instance I took the RC car to a different building and raised an alarm while hiding in some distant corner room of another building. Yet somehow the enemies ended up searching near my location eventhough the alarm was raised in another building.

It's seems the game will bomb as far as this thread goes, which is good for me and my buddy because we loved it and that hopefully means it will drop in price quick. we had 3h of fun yesterday. Good action coop fun.

Hoping a game you like bombs just so you can grab it a few bucks cheaper is one of the dumbest things I've read this week.

No, it's garbage on PC. Played on both pad and kbm.
