PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Ya'll know we're in a world where you can get a 200GB SD card for $65, even less on sale?

Add in an SD to IDE adapter and you've got everything you need, and as a bonus it's even easier to hook up to a computer for transfer.
With a good adapter it's not significantly easier to move things around, and it's actually substantially more expensive per GB. I get the appeal and was planning to go that route for a long time, but the IDE harddrive is just super easy. Only big advantages of using a different storage medium are speeds (which i've heard variable reports about how much this matters, it might be bottlenecked by the PS2) and the lack of moving parts and therefore more reliability in the long run.
What is this everdrive mod you're talking about?
Think he was mixed up and referring to FMCB/FHDB with OPL.

At this point low spec IDE hard drives like that are new-old-stock or more likely refurbished. I've seen that some unscrupulous sellers are selling refrub hard drives as new, despite them coming from long running business computers or datacenter servers.

Might be cheap and if it breaks it's not that bad since you won't have anything irrepacaple on there but we're getting to the point where SD cards + adapter are preferable for IDE interfaces in almost all cases.

Yeah, that's fair enough and like I said, longevity is an issue. But like you noted it's so cheap to replace that I'm not too fussed. Once i can get a 256GB/512GB SD card for 30$ or so I'll probably move to that, but for no it seems superfluous.

Also, I thought i'd heard that the specific PS2 formatting inhibits just plugging the SD card in and reading it normally. dunno if you know anything about that.

This topic bring back some good memory with my Ps2 I own. I manage to go to the basement and try to find my Ps2 with an attachment screen and going back to play one of the game I love to play on my Ps2, Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance. Look like I have something to do for a while now.

Also, I need to dust off a bit of how to get games on my old Ps2 fat into its hard drive as is been while since I did it now.

Anyone know a good ebay seller or other online storefront for a good condition (or new) OEM dualshock 2? Not picky about color or anything, just want one that's going to last a while since despite taking good care of mine the buttons can be a tad finnicky at times.

you want to know something silly? i could not for the life of me find a decent ps2 controller for cheap so i had to buy a ps2 system off craigslist for $10 for the controller. true story
my left analogue was crapping out and leaning to the right when centered.

There are so many knock offs of controllers that I'm not actually surprised at all. Can't even trust brand new in packaging controllers since knock offs have emulated the look so well.

I wish there was a good wireless controller available now... like from 8bitdo or something.

Wasn't into the idea of the logitech back in the day, as it didn't look like the real thing.

there are ways to create ps2 bluetooth adapters for use with a dualshock 3, but they're pretty involved and typically use a raspberry pi + arduino or similar combo. I've debated commissioning someone to make me one, but since i play at a desk with my console right next to me, it seems a tad extraneous.

Yeah, I'm hoping 8bitdo eventually does a PS2 receiver for their controllers, too.

I've picked up a few different Chinese knock-off controllers, and they all either come with sticks that drift, or the sticks start to drift after a few uses. I've only got the awful "official" Katana wireless controller now, and all my wired controllers broke from wear years ago.

It never dawned on me that an attachment screen might be a great idea in this day and age. Component will probably eventually be removed from the back of TVs (if it hasn't already, a terrifying thought).

They're quite a few Ps2 LCD screen in the market for the Fat and Silm. Unfortunately, not all are great and some have a very small screen which make you wonder why you buy it ( you see this on the Fat version).

If you have a Ps2 slim (the one with the power brick), I would look into the Joytech LCD screen like the one I own on the pic. It's the best one in the market at the time and from using it for a while, it might be the better one in the market. Unfortunately, getting this screen is very hard to get and I only see them in the use market in Europe than in North American. I was lucky to get mine where I live and even mine have some minor issue on mine from the original owner (duck tape residue).

Anyone has more information on these SD to IDE adapters? Can any adapter/card be bought and used alright? or does it require some modding?

They should all be fine AFAIK but get one that supports SDXC. You'll also need a way for it to fit the network adapter IDE slot. I use a 40pin IDE SD card adapter plus a pin converter to 44pin + molex power which works well.

Edit: I meant to write SDXC, not sure how it came out as SDCC.

Is there a list of arcade ports to the PS2?

I don't have much time to dedicate to long-term gaming, so things like big RPGs or strategy games don't work for me.

I already have most of the retro game collections, plus Metal Slug, the Street Fighter collections, etc.

What else is out there that I can pick up and play for 45 minutes or so, and then put down after having a satisfying experience?

I actually already have that one.

And I thought most of the Cave shooters were Japan only. Are they actually region-free?

Ah, no they're not. If that's a requirement it's harder. Might look in to the PS2 Raiden and Gradius titles.

I also find that games like Armored core or RAD are pretty good to play for relatively small sessions.

Is Silent Hill 4 The Room considered rare now? I'm finding it hard to find one. Someone is selling a pre-owned copy for $45.

PC version is(and priced higher than that). PS2 version is getting up there(though has ways to go).

Xbox version is like 10-15 bucks.

So I decided to just go ahead and buy a Japanese PS2.

Anything special I need to know. I live in the U.S. Do I need a voltage converter or anything?

Can I use my US-spec component cables, or do I need a new set?

I have a couple of questions regarding the PS2

I want to play a couple games that weren't released in the UK and I'm wondering whether the PS2 is region free.

If it isn't how would one go about playing an American game on a British console?

If I need a chipped console what is the easiest way of getting a chipped console that won't cost a ton of money?

would it be easier/cheaper to just buy an NTSC console on ebay even though i'll only be playing 2 or 3 games on it? This would result in having 2 PS2s however which is just more clutter really, innit.

PS2s are not region free. It is possible to use homebrew to play games from other regions, however afaik it requires ripping the game and playing on a backup disc or HDD. This process is pretty painless, and you can find someone to send you a homebrew-enabling memory card at cost in various places, though that might be a bit of a hassle in itself.

You can find chipped consoles on places on Assembler Games' trade forums. You might also be able to find someone willing to do the mod, though I don't know anyone personally.

Buying an NTSC console is pretty easy if you can get one local to where you are. Otherwise shipping might make the cost a bit prohibitive. Depending on your budget it might be the most appealing solution, though, as it's the only way to do it "legit".

Keep in mind, also, that due to differences between NTSC and PAL standards, your TV might not like the PS2's output via homebrew or modchip. I'm not sure about those particular methods, however most dev units (which are also region free) have issues with this.

Thanks for all the info.

There's a old tech shop near me so i'll go ask him if he knows anything about modding tomorrow. If that fails then there's a couple of American people on ebay that have cheap international shipping on NTSC consoles which would be the simplest option for me.

kinda glad consoles these days don't do this region stuff anymore tbh.

I miss my PS2. I sold it when the PS3 came on the scene, transferred my saved using that adaptor thingy, but then that died!

I haven't enjoyed my PS2 library in ages since then. My PS3 is the slim, which can't play them.

Pick up a used PS2. they're cheap and typically still run okay. If you're interested in homebrew, pick up a fatty and it'll last for ages since you dont have to worry about the laser playing from an HDD.

Edit: disregard. I set up PCSX2 out of curiosity and it doesn't freeze when I play it off the disc on my PC. Guess my PS2 just doesn't like Drakengard lol.

Hey all, I have an SCPH-39001 and I was wondering if there were any known issues with it regarding game playback? I'm trying to play a copy of Drakengard that used to work fine on my backwards compatible PS3, but my PS2 is having issues reaching the main menu (unfortunately my PS3's disc drive no longer works so I can't test the game on there). Other games seem to work fine with my PS2, and a quick Google search didn't bring up anything, but I'm hoping I won't have to buy a replacement copy of the game.

So what's the go-to solution for saving PS1 games on a PS2? Am I right in thinking I'm confined to normal PS1 memory cards or is there a way to use PS2 memory cards or a virtual memory card via homebrew? Moreover, should I stick with OEM or are there nice after market (preferably higher capacity) MCs for the PS1?

PS2 lasers can be fickle beasts. If you've got another game that has a similar-looking disc (they vary a bit in format), try doing a bit of trouble shooting and seeing if there's any pattern.

Hey dude, hope you're doing well :)

Stick with PS1 memory cards for PS1 games.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately I don't own many PS2 games, but that's good to know. I'm just glad I was able to get it running in PCSX2, was worried I'd have to track down another copy!

Hope you're doing well too, dude :)!

Anyone want a copy of Street Fighter EX3 or Chaos Legion? I have an extra of each. Chaos Legion has a bunch of light scratches, but still seems to work fine. Both are complete.

From what I have read, the 39001 is one of the best PS2 fat models to get. I have one and it plays everything I have tried so far. Though the tray does open a bit slow.

I'm looking for some recommendations.

I've been in a beat'em up mood recently, but I'm not sure what's available for the PS2.

I already have the Capcom Classics collections, SNK anthology, and others. I also just ordered a copy of Sega Ages: Dynamite Deka (I both both a US and JPN PS2)

Are there any other 2D beat'em ups I should check out? The more affordable the better.
