Nier: Automata PC performance thread

errrr, for some reason, the game closes the instant i press Ctrl+Shift+Backspace. thought it was because of afterburner, but the same happened after closing it. Ctrl+Shift+O works fine tho.

EDIT: and i cant seem to find the FAR.ini to manually change the setting.

I got that problem when using the autoinstaller, but installing the latest version manually solved it. Far.ini should be in the main NieR directory but I think it requires NieR to start once before it gets written.

Maybe I'm blind and just didn't see it in the OP, but can someone explain to me what GI is with relation to this game? Global illumination? What's the problem? I haven't bought the game yet, but I plan to soon.
Yes, it's global illumination.

There's not really a "problem". What was discovered is that it runs the GI algorithm at a rather high level of precision/propagation/whatever (not really known), which takes a significant chunk of GPU time. Reducing it to a lower level makes no huge qualitative difference to the rendering output in the situations that were tested so far (while turning it off completely does), but can quite significantly improve performance.

Ahh, okay. Thanks for the explanation. Good find!

Texture caching being turned off by default on the latest version finally solved all the framerate issues on my end as far as I can see today! Yay!

Game runs soooo silky for me now with everything turned up except AA and GI on my GTX 690. So beautiful to finally being able to enjoy this great game as intended.

Will definitely go donate a few bucks to both Kailaden and DrDaxxy. <3 <3

Maybe a dumb question but I just installed the GI fix and look in the options and don't see the slider people are talking about. Just a GI quality drop down from low to ultra. Did I do something wrong?

The drop down has all the sensible values anyway. I'm guessing: 0 (off), 16, 32, 64, 128 (ultra).
Personally I found that dropping it below high had a visible effect on grass, while there's barely a visible difference between high and ultra.
Haven't checked performance difference though.

There was a slider in the testing version. The release version replaced that with this drop-down.

Can we get some updates to the OP? I left for like a day and a half and now I have no idea what you guys are talking about. What is this GI fix? I'm on mobile and scrolling through pages of text isn't the easiest.

The fix you speak of was added to the OP hours before your post. To be perfectly frank, I've made 30 of these threads (and counting, no doubt) since early 2013 and go out of my way to keep all of them up-to-date, so -- and I'm speaking generally here and not singling you out -- questioning why something isn't in the OP that actually is in the OP is a little frustrating, and even as a legitimate grievance does slightly rub me the wrong way as this piece of advice is in literally all of them:

When posting your own tip/trick or something else you'd like to see here in the OP, be sure to mention my username as this way the post will appear among the results when I search for my username after an absence. I may miss your suggestion otherwise.

I'm not looking for sympathy, don't get me wrong. My point is simply this: I'm only human. I'm going to miss stuff. Stuff that should be there. Stuff that whose absence will annoy people because of how obvious or important it is. But, please, tell me rather than exercise passive aggression. In being direct, you're not only creating a resource of future reference for yourself but also helping others who happen upon this thread. It's a community effort, which is why everybody who suggests something is credited accordingly. PC performance threads aren't for me; they're for you.

I'm pretty sure a "Performance Boost/Resolution Boost" patch will be coming to the PS4 soon now. Hopefully they'll give credit to DrDaxxy for finding this issue.

Jase, I'm sorry you took my post that way. Everything from pages 42-44 kept referencing a "GI fix" which was not listed in the OP (which I did refer back to...) and I was very confused where that came from. I tried to express my gratitude to the posters who cleared it up for me to try and illustrate my thanks.

I did not mean to question you as to why information wasn't in the OP, but rather to show that for someone not following every post, additional information could be added to the OP (namely adding the words 'GI fix' somewhere) to help clarify where the fix could be found and what it was.

My post was intended to be a legitimate "please add this info to the OP" like you mentioned, even if it did not read that way, and I promise I truly did not mean to be passive aggressive or snarky. I appreciate this thread, your efforts, and the people in the thread who continue to post and help other users.

I'll be more careful with my language next time. Thanks again.

Is there even a hint that an official patch is in the works? Has Square Enix made any comment in regards to the game other than to promote its launch?

yep. tried that and it worked. thanks :D

This message from the PR team sounds like they're working on something at least.

I can't get FAR + GI Mod to work. Anytime I try launching the game it just doesnt load up. It sits in my system processes using no CPU and no Memory. I've tried removing all the files and reinstalling them to my Nier directory via the installer app, I've tried putting them in there manually. I tried removing JUST the dxgi.dll file and it does the same thing. I've also made sure that the Steam Overlay and Discord Overlay settings are turned off.

I'm at a loss, any ideas?

Man hoping for a serious patch from SE and nvidia soon. Just tried to play seriously now that I had time and it crashed every 5 to 10 minute's. Turned my settings down to 2x AA no vsync and finally after 79+ minutes of restarts from crashes got through the opening...

I5 6600k
GTX 1070
16Gb ram

I know the PC can handle more so wtf...

Are you perhaps overclocking? I had to default my overclock and restart my system to finally stop that from happening. Only certain parts of the game give me this issue. It's usually during boss fights.

Had a similar problem. I needed to close Afterburner/RTSS. Try that if you haven't already.

Sadly even reducing the GI there's some bits the game just doesn't seem to like. xD

I just did a 'mini-boss' decently far into my first play-through(Route A I guess?)
giant snake orb thing in the sky attacking Pascal's Village
and the frame rate tanked, hard - was dropping below 30 from 60. I can only imagine the game was struggling on
all the little robots that comprises it
.

Fortunately that seems to be the exception.

Looks like the low (16) GI option can also be broken, medium (32) seems like the best option for now.

(Spoilers for just after ending A) http://diff.pics/3ovX1NvcEEsh/1

Interesting, I didn't notice anything like this when I was playing, but sure enough -- I went and checked and the GI is worse on Low. Strange.

I did some very unscientific benchmarks in areas that seem to use GI quite a bit (fields with grass, town, the "GI grass alley"), and it looks like the performance difference (on my 1080) is about 5% GPU load (i.e. Medium GI increased load by ~ 5% over Low).

Given this, I think that bumping things to Medium isn't too big of a deal. It's still a major improvement over the default, and 32 was supposed to be nearly identical to the default 128. Dropping from the default down to medium still saves anywhere from 10-15% GPU load, so it's still significant -- just not as nice as the 20%+ savings going from default to Low.

Good catch!

EDIT: Seems to mainly change the lighting on objects using medium/far LOD models/textures, so it might be tied to the game's pretty crappy LOD system. For objects close to you, or already at max LOD quality, GI seems to work properly on Low. Or, maybe it isn't related to the LOD system at all, and the GI settings are actually altering how the GI quality cascades -- i.e. on Low there isn't a decent-quality GI map that far away from the player, so it looks "wrong" or "dark".

So um, as someone who hasn't bought this game yet but really wants to, should I wait until it's patched or can I jump in now and easily apply the unofficial patches? I'm running an Oc'd 6600k and gtx 1070 and want to run the game in 1440p.

dude these unofficial patches are great. 1070 you'll be great too for 1440p.

buy now

1440p may be reachable if you turn down the GI settings with FAR.

At default, probably not. You should check with other 1070 users.

Your cpu is fine, that isn't an issue at all in this game.

Jump in! Fan fixes are now wonderful.

I just wanted to say situations like this game's release is why I moved over to PC gaming a few years ago.

Something's broken and people figure out ways to fix it. One guy figures something out one day, another the next day. Within a few days, your game is capable of looking and running better than the game the devs originally released.

It's just an awesome thing to see. If a game is busted on console, it's busted. If a game is busted on PC, there's a lot of smart people willing to put in some time for the sake of the community.

disable steam overlay and remove reshade dlls, FAR basically don't play well with all of those on my end, lol. The old release before the GI options work so I'm thinking about going back to that.

Overlay was disabled long ago and I don't use reshade or any other mods. Going back to the original might just be the only way to go at this point I suppose.

They are regularly uploading new builds to their testing branches on Steam. I imagine a patch isn't far off. I do hope it adds an offical toggle for GI levels considering the performance impact. The idea of lowering it on consoles is amusing but seems unlikely. I would be fancinated to hear about how they chose the value for GI given we still haven't seen a case of significant differences in quality using lower values

I have an i5 6500 and a 1070. Without Kaldaien's mod or GI fix I could run it at 1080p 60fps only if I disabled AA and vsync. With Kaldaien's mod got it to vsync on. With the GI fix I got it to 1440p no trouble. Didn't try turning AA on again, but at 1440p downsampled to my 1080p screen doubt I need it.

I'm pretty sure its not OC'd, I tried OCing before and my PC always ended up failing to start like a day later and reverting to default so I gave up on that. I'll check again and make sure there are not any OC randomness.
