Kotaku: Fans Are Ripping The Halo World Championship For Its Shabby Venue

Yes, they're coming out with a new heavy-duty console later this year, but they don't really want to be in the business anymore.

I don't play hardware specs, i play games.

Scorpio, with the kind of game management Xbox one had, is a potential paperweight.

PS4 has some amazing exclusives this year so far

Nier
NI-OH
Horizon zero dawn
Kingdom hearts 2.
Kingdom hearts 1.5/2.5 HD
Yakuza 0
Tales of berseria.
MLB the show 17

And that's just the spring. The only exclusive Xbox has I know of this spring is halo wars 2.

Can you take your console fanboy shit out of the thread. This is about 343/ESL issues with the venue for the HWC finals.

15 pages because of the venue?? Lol

Probably more than the actual thread discussing the finals.. Complete with game lists for other consoles.

Pretty pathetic

Yep, just now a little larger then the finals thread http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1354557&page=15

Obviously the Xbox One has issues, but there are times on this site where I feel that I am walking into a Reddit circle-jerk over how shit it is.

Oh well, I'm loving my Xbone & Halo 5's multiplayer. It is pretty shitty how the venue turned out, but it was generally an amazing tournament to watch!

That is the impression I get. No creativity or large investment in new exclusive games, it's like Xbox is operating on the bare minimum to get through this generation.

I think that says more about the general interest and sentiment around Halo than anything about the users on GAF. When a franchise as big as Halo cannot build hype for a world championship complete with a decent prize pool - that should raise some major concerns. It just so happens that it coincided with a funny thread about the venue which included photoshopGAF. It could have just as easily been about another championship or franchise.

Lol the issue wasn't 'hype'. The issue was a bad venue. The 'hype' was larger than the venue could facilitate... which is the actual story here.

The fact that people are creating their own narrative is kinda an indictment of the gafs fascination with negativity surrounding halo.

Fans who wanted to see it live couldn't/wouldn't due to the venue. Those who did come were subject to what was by far The smallest, shabbiest halo venue of 2017, despite it being the most important event...

people need to stop thinking Halo is a big franchise, it simply isn't anymore.

still my fav game this gen, and I love watching HCS... but I have come to terms with its low popularity these days and just enjoy it for what it is.

even the free PC version didn't make a ripple!

It isn't a question of Halo being a big franchise. It is a question of holding the premiere event of the year in something better than converted Jiffy Lube garages and birthday tents with metal bleachers.

Halo is still the #2 premiere console eSports shooters. Don't compare it to CS:GO, compare it with CoD. Infinite Warfare has been trashed and is a very shit game at pro level play. Yet Activision and MLG treat it with the utmost respect. Event after event HCS staff, ESL staff, Millenial eSports staff have dropped the ball. This isn't the first time. Audio issues, stream issues, venue issues. Games going until 5 am EST, pros saying they couldn't even get water in Orange County.

Hell they didn't even have the decency to present OpTic with a check, the trophy this time. Just got Snakebite to say a few words and voila. They do a minimum amount of effort and then say awe shucks no one cares. Other pros from CS:Go and CoD were saying why wasn't it advertised more. You have devs from the Coalition and guys like MLG Adam post more on Beyond during the Halo tourney than anyone from HCS.

efyu_lemonardo

May I have a cookie?
They should reimburse some of the people who payed to fly in only to sit in a tent. Take it out of the prize money. I mean there's only a couple dozen people there.

If there's anyone who's truly interested in the topic at hand- the terrible venue- here's esl's response to fan backlash when the venue was announced... Back in February

To speak to the question of “why Burbank?” We did have conversations with a number of different partners and explored a variety of options with regards to venues - also on the East Coast (you might remember me tweeting about location scouting the day after Fall Finals for instance). Unfortunately, none of these worked out for this year. That being said, we are actively continuing these conversations for future events.

As most of you know, the ESL campus with our broadcast studios located in Burbank is our home base (internally, we call it the campus because we’re spread across different buildings, this is just the first time we’ve used the term publicly). I am confident that those who make the trip to California will not be disappointed and will have a great time here. Our space has come a long way since we had our first Halo tournament here over 2 years ago - since then we have probably grown 4 times or so - and with this event we’re pushing for yet a better experience with more cool shit to do than at Fall Finals. We are working on a bunch of activities for the on-site audience, which is why we are calling it a festival. In addition to watching the world elite compete we want our guests to be part of a weekend full of Halo all around. Our goal is to make people feel the gravity and weight of this event and what it means to the players, fans and community

In addition, we’re working on maximizing the available space for audience seating inside the studio so that more of you will be able to witness the action first hand than during Fall Finals. To that end we’re changing up the layout, for instance by moving the FFA outside of the studio. As pointed out, there will be an outside viewing area where we’ll have the feeds and gameplay from both streams - so there will be as much action going on outside as there will be inside. In total, we are aiming for 300+ guests, in addition to the players and crew.

I also know that our production team will give everyone watching on-site and at home a great show worthy of a world championship for the entire weekend. We’ll have two streams going so that anyone can watch any match they want. Personally, I am proud of the production quality we’ve brought to the table and we are constantly pushing ourselves to be better and I am confident to say that we have been able to step it up from event to event. I have no doubt that we will be able to do this again and put on an amazing show for the World Championship!

I hope this offers some perspective on why the event is held at Burbank and gives you confidence in that you will enjoy the event. We aim to put on one hell of a show and an incredible weekend for both players and spectators alike.

Thanks for reading, and I hope to see you there!

TLDR: ESL had a whole year to plan the event, and apparently couldn't find a venue. So they used their home base, put up some tents, and sold as many tickets as the fire code would allow. And they "marketed" it as a festival to justify the price of admission to people who couldn't fit into the venue.

I was talking about hype in relation to the thread on GAF and other forums. Something as major as the Halo world championship has a smaller/similar sized thread to it's disappointing venue. It should have been a funny side story at best and instead it has generated more social discussion than the $1M Championship. Major red flag.

Wait, what, people paid over 60 dollars to be put in a tent watching a stream? Did they know their tickets weren't going to get them into the actual venue?

There are frequently free festivals here with higher production values than that (those run on food, drinks, and sponsors/commercials).

Red flag about what? Competitors show up to the events, viewers tune into the competitions. The games revenues support the prize pools.

Who cares whether or not GAF is interested enough to support a thread about the actual competition? The pattern has been that GAF flocks to negative threads about halo, even though the dont really care about halo.

GAF has never really been a hub for real discussion about competitive halo. Why would it start now?

The listing stated that people who bought legendary passes recieves "preferential seating" and every else recieved "spectator access".

The preferential seating meant you were in the main venue. Spectator access meant you were waiting in the tent, watching the stream, hoping that space would open up in the venue. No one really had a way of knowing that before they got there.

You don't build esports with the idea of guaranteed returns from a venue. It's used to generate popularity for the game itself. That's where the return comes from.
Which obviously isn't bringing in that return so the funding was cut.

The venue was probably a result of them keeping the reward at a million dollars despite budget cuts.

It's still a business, and if Halo isn't bringing in what it used to, they aren't going to spend what they used to either.

This isn't what happened. Around the same time as the announcement that the Halo World Championship was going to be at this Dump, it was also announced that the European qualifier tournament would be held at FREAKING WEMBLEY?

If there was a budget crunch, why would they blow their load on venues for the qualifiers, then have the main event in a repurposed Jiffy Lube?

This had nothing to do with a lack of funds, and everthing to do with ESL dropping the ball.

Here's photos of halo 5s 2017 venues:

Mind you these aforementioned tournaments were run by organizers much smaller than ESL.

This has nothing to do with their being too little interest or to little $ in the scene, or the game being dead. This is about ESL dropping the ball when it comes to venues ever since they got the contract for Halo5s major tourneys. 343s refusal to demand better work from esl.

Obviously its because they didn't get their return of investment! Because some everyday poster will totally have that kind of knowledge presented to them by Microsoft about their biggest IP!

And not because ESL is incompetent half the time.

edit:
For the world championship finals, that pretty bad.

For Halo, its decent. Last years was definitely better but I don't think they have announced how the Twitter streams went and I don't care about Beam so I never checked in to see the viewership there.
It can be better obviously, and hopefully it will be because the matches were great all weekend.

Don't you just love when people spill their own narrative all over the facts? /s

Yeah, the twitch viewership was essentially on par with last year's if you don't include Summit hosting the tournament and boosting it by about 20k.

There were another 9k people watching it on Facebook, and a couple hundred on Beam.

an ESL rep implied that on Friday there was at one point 60k people viewing it on Twitter, concurrently. That number likely grew for Sunday. We have no idea if thats how many people had the ad running mute on their dashboard or if thats how many actually opened it full screen. I'd assume the latter, because clicks are the metric advertisers would be most interested in. But then again this is ESL talking so who knows.

As primarily a Dota 2 player (as far as games I follow the competitive scene go) who has gone to The International....

nikuwt3.jpg

...my goodness. Never thought I'd see Halo here after all the good times I had with the franchise and I'm surprised Microsoft let this happen even if it wasn't their event. Sorry Halo bros. I've long since left the franchise for other waters, but I certainly hope for the best in the future. I hope 343 figures out the magic formula sooner rather than later. Halo should not be an "also ran" franchise. New Halo games used to be inflection points in gaming generations. Far from that now, to be sure.

If there was a budget issue, it would be interesting to see how it played out. A place like Wembley would have had to be secured well in advance. Cancelling such a venue can be expensive as hell. So keeping it and cutting back on other venues would have had to happen. I'm not saying that's how it happened, just saying that the qualifier location being at Wembley doesn't mean their wasn't a budget issue. The fact that the current location passed review means someone blessed off on it.

Nope

Actually, wembley was secured at the last minute, 2weeks before the tournament. First, The EU organizer, Gfinity, had announced it would be held on their own property. Players had already booked their hotels near gfinity arena and everything. They ended up having to catch the subway to get to the stadium.

Again, this wasn't a budget issue. ESL has been doing similar shit with every H5 tournament they've held since launch.

Halo brings in more $ than Gears and Gears has better venues. But Gears is run by MLG.

The issue is the organizer. According to ESL this was last resort. It's just strange that the largest esports organizer in the would is less resourceful than smaller ones.

Oh wow. Ok then. Was trying to find some sort of reasoning. Guess their isn't any.

Has anyone from 343 commented on the venue issues?

Nope - think they are just going to pretend this didn't happen if I had to guess. I've already reached out to the head of ESL and asked about refunds. Nothing but silence.

That's really disappointing. I watched the head of Optic Gaming's video and it was just sad seeing him just outright depressed over the effort put forth. I'm not too big into esports but I know gaming companies ask a lot of the fans when it comes to supporting events like this. Sucks 343 didn't come through for you guys.

For the world championship finals, that pretty bad.

Most of the little amount I watched was on twitter and beam to avoid the twitch chat for the most part.

That being said I can't imagine twitter, beam and all that other stuff put up big numbers on top of the twitch viewer count. Halo just doesn't have the juice anymore.

I think at this point they could release the best halo game ever crafted and it would still be crushed viewer wise by CoD on console. Does make me wonder if there could ever be a PC competitive scene at some point tho.

Knew exactly what was going on when I saw the thread title.

So that's all this is? Just anti-Xbox shitposting? You feel this venue is representative of the multi-million-dollar franchise that is Halo?

I don't think so. This thread is mostly people in disbelief about finding out the current state of the Halo competitive gaming scene.
I can't see how you can look at the images and read the response of the pros and act like this is just fanboys trying to make a dig at MS. That's only possible if you've got blinders on.

Not everything is an attack aimed at your precious box, you know? It's not even aimed at Xbox at all.
You're taking this shit way too personal.

I'm not surprised you're in denial about a lot of these posts. You have blinders on if you truly believe this thread is full of people in disbelief about the venue. A lot of these posts are people using the topic to take their shots.

We've had like 3 thinly veiled xbox threads in the past couple of days. People aren't taking things personal; they're just not fucking blind.

🙄🙄🙄

The very first post on the top of the page is calling the scorpio a potential paperweight and a few posts below that is a post quoting a PS4 games list.

But blinders, projection, serious, etc.

Man, I'm at work and Kotaku is blocked so I can't really see much but from the pictures I can see... these are like meme pics and not actual photos that haven't been photoshopped, right?

HALO YARD SALE ---->

Holy shit, I didn't pay to go to this and I am outraged by this crap. What in the actual fuck...ESL/343i cannot justify this shit.

Reading other post they had a whole year on top? Why do the qualifying venue look so much better than the world finals? Unbelievable, if 343i thinks the work that ESL is doing with such an IP then damn, lost for words in all honesty.

Hate to see Halo being downgraded to this.
